With our dogs I open their mouths, and put the pill in as far down their tongues as possible, and then hold their mouth shut with their snout pointing upward. Eventually they swallow. Then they get a treat. Would that work with a cat? My dogs are not biters.

I’m fortunate that my current kitties love Pill Pockets - I’d try this first. For a previous cat, I resorted to using a pill shooter and wrapping kitty in towel and keeping head up (otherwise she’d spit it out). It can be a challenge.

Our little Yorkie Sam is VERY traumatized with pill taking. You cannot get it down. It's impossible no matter what. All meds have to be converted into liquid form and administered with a syringe that can be squirted into his little mouth. It works well!

Thank you all for your expertise. We called the vet and they may have to prescribe another pill since Nyx didn't take the pill too well. Compounding into liquid sounds great, including Pill Pockets idea.

Aww! I definitely encourage you to get meds compounded into liquid. It will cost more than the pills but absolutely worth it.
I've done the pill shooter thing (cat spits it out), and the crush the pill and mix it up thing (messy), but the compounding is always best.

We have one cat who keeps getting roundworms from eating the mice that get into our basement. The vet gave us a powder to mix with food but kitty won’t eat it even if it’s mixed with human canned tuna. If you don’t know how gross roundworms are, google it, not something to ignore. DH found a liquid med you can put on the back of their neck like flea treatment for dogs but it’s pricey, requires a prescription, and has to be done monthly but we’re probably going that way. Had forgotten about the syringe into the back of the mouth trick, or the pill shooter one, so glad some of you recommended it! We also set up mousetraps inside shoe boxes with a tiny hole so the mouse can get in but kitty can’t get hurt.

I use Pill Pockets. They are little moist treats that you put the pill in, and the cat eats it like a treat. I've used them for all my cats over the years, and they all took them fine. You can buy them in any pet store or online, or maybe even from your vet. Good luck!

Pilling cats is just that—a real pill. My success rate with pills is comparable to slim cat’s, and that’s with decades of experience.

For future reference, ask your vet to have medicine compounded as a liquid. That’s been a sanity saver for me. So far I’ve not run into any medication that couldn’t be compounded as a liquid. I’m in DC too, and there is a local pharmacy in my neighborhood that will compound veterinary meds. If you’re in NW, Rodman’s will probably offer that service. There are also a number of good online veterinary pharmacies that will fill scripts and compound meds. Roadrunner Pharmacy in Phoenix, AZ, is the best I’ve ever used. Most vets have relationships with at least one of these services.

I hope your little guys are feeling better soon!

I took care of five cats last summer. I have always been a dog person. Dogs are easy to pill. Cats! I wrapped the cat in a towel and got a pill shooter (nemosmom describes it). Then I held the cat and shot the pill in the cat's mouth.
I found out how to do it by watching YouTube videos. The towel wrapping was a lifesaver.

Nemo would REFUSE to eat any food that had been mixed with meds, no matter how yummy it was. He would rather starve! We got a pill shooter! Looks like a syringe, with a rubber tip to hold the pill. Hold cat by the scruff, shoot the pill with the other hand, and clamp their mouth closed. My cat would try to refuse to swallow, but if you gently blow on their nose, they will swallow. Sounds barbaric, but that is how my vet instructed me.Your vet may even have one you can use.

I have super rebellious cats when it comes to taking medicines. A vet taught me this method: crush the pill finely , mix it with water and fill a syringe with the mixture. Remove the needle. Grasp the cat firmly by the scruff of the neck, insert the syringe into his mouth, sideways, between the bottom teeth and spray. He will have to swallow, like it or not. He will play crazy, be careful not to get scratched.

Good morning all YLF family. As you may know, we are new cat owners and are in the 3d month of caring for our new kitties. They are doing well, but we have since discovered that one of the kitties (Nyx #1) has roundworm and both will have to take some Rx meds.

The issue is administering the pills. After crushing one pill for each and mixing it with their wet food, one ate with out hesitation, while the other did not (pretty much licked off the good stuff). We tried everything from mixing other types of foods from stews to gravies, etc. and she still wouldn't eat her meal. At this point, we are on the 3d day, and am afraid the the costly pill has gone down the drain. I'm hoping she licked some of the meds, but not sure. Any suggestions for over the counter meds?
