And things like accessories, bags, lingerie - fine. The rest of the apparel is quite confusing to me. I think maybe breakdown by brands/lines would be helpful, e.g. this line is good for certain kind of tops, or certain body type. I don't know if it's feasible and if their merchandise lends itself to this kind of generalization, but I am just trying to throw out ideas. By the way, a couple of weeks ago I was picking up some baby clothes and I noticed a great-looking denim jacket in the junior dept. I didn't have time to try it and it's not online... Here's what she did: Went straight to the dress department. Did not get overwhelmed by a million other departments. Went straight to the day dress area (of course, not labeled, but you can tell which one it is because it's not the formal evening dresses). Went right to the racks and started pulling dresses with the right shape and fabrics. This only works if you have a specific idea of what you want. That seems to be key in dealing with Macy's. That is the closest nice store I have to me, and it can be overwhelming. I have to add that the Macy's I went to when I lived in Ohio was always a mess, very small, never had any of the great stuff I can find in the store here or online so I didn't take it serisously for awhile. Not all Macy's stores are created equal. But a guide would be great! Since being overwhelmed with Macy's seems to be a common topic, would you consider doing a post on it? Your guide to Nordstrom departments was very helpful - this was actually the first YLF post I read. I used to shop at Macy's a lot when I first moved to US, and I see others' purchases that look very nice, but I just don't know how to find things there. And I never even look at their pants. And their brands keep changing, too, so my experience from 10 years ago is useless now. My local one is usually a mess too - it looks like a thrift store to me which is why I hardly ever shop there. I'm much more comfortable with the Ann Taylor and BR type of store because it's small & organized and I know where everything is. But of course, the selection is so limited! I guess if you go often you get familiar with the layout and can navigate it better.
