A beautiful collection of casual dresses. I love the white dress for a very hot summers day, especially when it is sized down and tied in at the waist. All the others fit beautifully and the polka dot dress is worth the extra effort.

The polyester in the navy dress will be less of a problem if you wear it in cooler transitional seasons rather than high summer. Accessories can differ. You can use pastels or white in spring and earth tones like rust or olive or brown in the fall.

Thank you all very much for your input!

It is a universal vote that the first dress is too big (and I wouldn't alter this one), so it has to go back. Unfortunately XS sold out in the meantime, and I cannot find it elsewhere. If I manage to find it somewhere else/there are returns I will reorder it in XS.

Fashintern, I agree that if I end up with the first dress it needs a bright accent or I need a light tan, otherwise I will look quite washed out. I see what you are saying about the last one, but I have a strong preference for dresses that are supposed to be fitted at the waist to actually be fitted - I wouldn't wear it loose/as is.

Slim Cat, yes, it looks alterations are the way to go for the last one.

Joy, agreed that the 4th one looks the best with the belt - I wouldn't wear it without it.

Kelly, agreed that last one is closest to my old style. Regarding my body type, you are correct that I used to be a "clear" hourglass until fairly recently. In the last couple of years I gained some weight (1.5 sizes) which went all over. At the beginning of this year I decided to make an effort to loose it, and I am mostly there (have the stubborn final 5lbs to go). However, all the loss was from my bottom half, and I even confirmed at a recent fitting that my bra band went up a size. I will analyze which shape is dominant (IT vs. hourglass) once it stops changing.

Rachy, you are right about 2nd dress calling for sneakers/very casual flat sandals for day wear. An alternative would be to add an oversized vest to de-bombshell it.

Angie, thank you for the input! Alterations it is then for the final dress. Now that it got your killer endorsement, I am leaning towards keeping the Gap dress. The polyester content will hopefully not make it too hot, and if it does, I can donate it as it was very inexpensive.

Elle, you are very kind, thank you! I agree that the Gap navy and Loft teal/green appear to fit just fine as they are.

Love the Gap t-dress (#6) and Loft dress (#7-9. I agree that the eyelet dress looks too big. I prefer the Loft dot dress in the size you have - the flow is part of the charm and in the summer, you will appreciate having a bit of space. You have a beautiful figure.

Size down on the eyelet! Great potential, and soooo pretty :)

LOVE the purple dress with the alterations. KILLER potential! Very pretty.

Gap dress looks KILLER perfect in the pics!

LOVE the Loft teal dress, and thumbs up for the loose fit. You will enjoy that in hot and humid weather.

I like the body con All Saints dress too! It's tight, but I know you enjoy that fit. Big thumbs up.

I’d size down on the first - and yes to the ties.

The second - I think you look healthy! Also: I feel this dress is calling for tennis shoes, a really sporty look.

The rest: gorgeous as is...!

The eyelet dress (1st one) looks too big in general on you but it is a cute summer dress. Alterations may be extensive on the S. I like the 2nd dress best but do see the IT-ness of your figure. The dress looks really good with those sandals.
I like #3 on you in the photo but you must be happy with the fabric.
I like 7-9 best with the tie belt. Without it the dress emphasizes your long torso (in the photo) so you would need to be ok with that. Maybe taking in the bottom will help, but it’s a gamble. Dress 10-12 is a very summery look,
style and color.
Think about toppers, especially for the navy dress as it is a color you can wear all year. Navy’s are very hard to match or even blend. I have 4 different shades of navy and they clash with each other. Only one looks ok with black. The rest look like I got dressed in the dark.

Gosh, these all look great! I love the eyelet but agree about sizing down. The pink one with the ruffled sleeves screams Tanya to me for some reason. I think both blue dresses look so elegant on you. I would be hard pressed to choose. And yes, I can't believe how IT you look now. I always thought you as an hourglass!

The first dress looks better with waist definition ( ties ) but does look too big - size down would be better I think. I like all the other dresses better on you with polka dotted one as favorite .
The print in polka dotted one is very pretty and more interesting because of print and color ( definitely taking in the waist for better fit - or wearing it with belt ).
I'm sensitive to the fabric - especially in summer heat - so the navy dress made with polyester would not make the cut ( personal preference ).

These are all lovely.

Absolutely use the drawstring on the first one. Unless I was very tan (tanner than I actually get), I’d want to add some color in jewelry or a bag, maybe the fuchsia shoes the Loft shows with your last dress.

I like the second one.

No use keeping the third one, because you have the next one in color and fabric you prefer.

I like the last one loose and flowing—when you hold the fabric, the gentle pleats disappear; when you move in it as is, the dress will still show your lovely figure.

I am trying to refresh my capsule of casual, out-and-about, (not work) dresses. Dresses have always been the hardest item for me to fit: I have a very long waisted hourglass body type, with fairly narrow waist, so on most dresses waist hits me too high, and even when it is right, more often than not taking in at the waist is required, too. Recently, my body shape has changed a little (weight gain, than loss but not quite all the way back, etc.) and as a result, in most fitted/tailored items, especially dresses, I need a size bigger on the top than on the bottom. This of course requires buying dresses in bigger size to fit the top and taking in at the bottom. I am happy to do this for work/tailored dresses, but for casual ones, I try to avoid it - happy to tailor some of the casual dresses if I really like them but try to choose ones that don't need it in the first place. I generally prefer structured items with waist definition, am perfectly comfortable with occasional body-con fit and will sometimes try a waist surrendering item for a change.

I have tried five casual dresses and have lots of questions. Thank you for the answers/patience in advance!

1) French Connection off-white eyelet boxy shirtdress (photos #1-4). This is a new silhouette for me. I really like the dress on its own (very breezy, the slip dress is also cotton), but not sure if it fits me right or it is simply too big (you can click through the Find to see how it fits the model). This is S, should I try to find XS? If I can't, is S acceptable or not? And can one try to tie the ties at waist like I did in the last photo, or is it not meant to be worn that way in addition to untied?

2) All Saints stripe asymmetric dress (photo #5). This one took me by surprise, as it is more body-con than expected (there was no photo of it on the model). It was the last one, so no exchange. I am fine with the fit, as the material is quite substantial and there is ruching. I am leaning towards keeping, but please say something if you think I shouldn't. Also curious, can you see the IT tendencies/changes in my body shape and how noticeable are they?

3) Gap navy t-shirt dress (photo #6). Love the color, cut and fit. The only thing giving me a bit of a pause is material - I am used to rayon jersey which is fairly soft, and this is a cotton/poly (t-shirt) blend that feels rougher. Not sure if I dislike it or am just not used to it. Will probably keep it.

4) Loft green jersey dress (photos #7-9). This was as close to teal as I could find. This is my preferred rayon jersey and I love the color and cut. It fits good on the top. It feels loose, like there is excess material on the bottom, but hopefully it is just a feeling and does not look that way. It is already XS, so no sizing down is possible.

5) Loft woven rayon dot dress (photos #10-12). This dress reminds me of Reformation dresses, which I really like, but with more coverage. This is a typical situation I described at the beginning - fits at the top, but would require some taking in at waist at hips. I could try a size down but it will likely be too tight on the top. I am leaning towards keeping and altering, however wanted to make sure it is worth doing so. I like the color, pattern, and cut. I am holding the excess material in the back in the last photo. ETA photo of Reformation dress that shows how I'd like mine to fit in the torso.
