Love your collection. I wear skirts, and skorts from Athleta, more than I wear shorts in the summer. I have some shorts but skirts and skorts are more my groove. I tend to wear jockey skimmies under the skirts, too.

There are definitely levels of casual, aren’t there? Angie’s casual skirt looks are quite refined by my standards! I also distinguish between sporty casual and boho casual, these being my main casual summer styles. Long/midi patterned skirts like yours are items I would consider not dressy exactly, but something I wear in a more styled way, typically not with sneakers because I struggle to make that look flattering and intentional. Resort or urban patio casual vs. cottage or yard work casual.
Lisap, I don’t *think* shorts are as popular here in Toronto for women 40+, at least for social events in the city and near suburbs. At the cottage, lots of shorts.

Wow, do I like that Maeve Anthro look.

I feel shorts can be... formal. Not dinner formal, but my dad was from the tropics and a lot of formal uniforms featuring (longer) shorts. And I had a knee-pants suit that was suitable for a hard tech office (and too formal for many tech-driven companies).

Or maybe the word I’m really looking for is ‘uptight,’ lol. ‘Shorts can be uptight,’ lol

Janet, I completely agree.... there is a mid thigh spot that works well on me for shorts or I need to go towards a true on the knee length. I used to wear mini skirts or dresses at that length too but no longer.

Somehow about two inches above the knee is the worst on me.......

I don’t wear shorts ever. I spend the summer in casual tshirt dresses, cotton or chambray skirts, and sundresses. All my dresses/skirts are knee length or longer. I feel comfy and casual and this look suits my personal style more than shorts (which I find uncomfortable and unflattering on me).

Janet, that snake print skirt is TDF!!!!! That said, I totally agree with you. Shorts and skirts (unless it's a really casual short skirt) are on the opposite ends of the spectrum.

I also love this camo shorts, but whenever i buy slouchy shorts like that, they tend to bag out and end up looking like they're only fit for the house and dog walks.

Jaime, now that you put it that way, I can see your point. But no mini skirt will ever again touch my body, so I don’t even consider them an option. All my dresses and skirts must reach my knees. I just realized years ago that shorter lengths don’t look right for me. It’s an issue of not only flattery but also a certain level of refinement or sophistication. With shorts, I feel like the vibe is casual enough that it skews sporty or even a little preppy. But a short skirt has so many ways it can go wrong for me.

I agree longer shorts tend to look dressier, or more refined, than shorter lengths. I tend to prefer those longer lengths. But it’s weird, there seem to be a couple of sweet spots for shorts flattery on me, and one of them is mid-thigh. I think there Is something about keeping that horizontal line away from my knee pudge that can help make my legs look better. And yes, I’m laughing at the fact that someone who hikes, bikes, and runs still has knee pudge! Not fair. LOL

To me comparing short shorts with midi skirts is asking the wrong question. Short shorts are almost always casual looking compared to midis. They should be compared to minis! Longer shorts look dressier to me. Biased opinion obviously.

Yes, Janet , you do have a wonderful collection of skirts and they really suit your style and your body type . I can’t even conceive of wearing them even though I’d sometimes love to dress that way .

When I asked the question , I knew what your answer would be , Angie

Again , it must just be my small-city norm where it’s shorts all the way unless it’s a dressy occasion . We’re just so happy to have summer weather here we absolutely dive into it ! My shorts collection looks exactly like suntiger’s .

I can see the dichotomy between your shorts and skirts. Your shorts are very cute and functional and your skirts are dressy and elegant. The skirts you have don’t look fussy at all, but a very different vibe.

Big yes from me! The long flowy skirts are great for weekends with low heel/flat sandals and a tank top. Since they're long, they're windproof and you can be active, sit on the floor with no danger of flashing anyone!
Stretchy tube skirts are another thing that works well for weekends with a flowy top. Also windproof, and easy to move in.
Skorts, especially with matching tanks (so they look like a dress) work for the most casual- home, hiking, paddleboarding Total freedom of movement, but not so much horizontal emphasis as shorts.

I wear skirts at home, casually, in WARM weather, too. It has to be warm, though, or my legs get too chilly. I dress them down with a tee or a simple top and (if wearing footwear, to go out) sneakers or sporty sandals. I find them much cooler and more comfortable than shorts for some activities.

I agree with you, Janet, that shorts are generally even more casual, but they can also be dressed up a bit with footwear/ tops/ toppers, and "our" sarong shorts, I treat more like a skirt, and will wear out into town.

Like you, I see it as a kind of continuum of casualness, if that makes sense.

To qualify as "casual" (to me) a skirt has to be easy fitting (either flowy and longer or stretch and longer -- I don't want to feel exposed or constrained.) It also has to be easy care. I do have to iron my Liberty skirt once in a while, but not that often, because the print disguises wrinkles and the cotton is so lovely that they mostly fall out anyway.

To answer Lisa P's question, I wear all my skirts at home, and style them casually. With sneaks and a relaxed top. They are soft, swooshy, long, easy, roomy, and VERY comfy. For me, much more comfortable than shorts and most of my jeans. I've shared my quarantine outfits.......you've seen them in action

Hi Janet. Hope all is well with you. I'm liking the Anthro skirt although no real reason to wear it at home since it's been quite chilly out (which means it will be 90 degrees soon). The only time I wear shorts is when we go to the beach to visit the inlaws and I don't even think I own a pair since I got rid of them this past winter.

I wear both shorts and skirts casually, but I don’t wear dressy shorts. Mine are summer vacations or at home days, casual errands.

I find a hat, glasses and choice of footwear make the outfit dressy or casual as mostly I wear simple tops or tees. For dressy big earrings and a dressy sandal, for casual a hat and slides or similar.

I always admire your summer skirt looks Janet as you find interesting shapes and patterns.

I think that, like anything else, skirts can be dressed up or down. On the rare occasion I wear one casually, I like pairing it with a denim jacket, the same way I do with dresses.

In Angie's blog post today, Lisa wondered how people are wearing skirts casually. I consider skirts and shorts to be on either end of a casual spectrum, for my summer style at least.

I've attached some examples of my shorts -- again, mid-to-longer lengths, and not dressy. They get worn with sneakers and sandals, plus a variety of tops.

And then some examples of my summer skirts. Longer midi lengths, and generally lighter fabrications. I dress them down with tees and flat or platform sandals or sneakers. A little more dressed up than the shorts, when I'm in the mood to look a little nicer to be out and about.

I don't really think of shorts and skirts to be 100% interchangeable, but I can dress up the shorts a little bit (say with a top that's a little more polished than a simple cotton tee) or dress down the skirts a little bit (by wearing them with the aforementioned tee), depending on where I'm going and what I'm doing.
