I was just in New York and saw a lot of women there wearing leggings with shorter tops/tunics - meaning tops that ended at the top of the thigh or even higher. To me this seemed too short. What is the right length? How do you know if it's too short or too long?

I wore ankle length leggings with ballet flats and skirt this week. I liked it! The day was too cool for bare legs and seemed too warm (and my activities were too casual) for my boots. I didn't even think of trying the leggings calf-length, but will try it.

Another reason why have avoided the leggings look is because of my body type. Being an inverted triangle (and not a skinny, supermodel one), I feel like leggings (and likewise skinny jeans), just emphasizes how thin my lower half is compared to the upper half. When I sported leggings in college, I wore them with hiking boots which sort of gave me something to balance it out. I feel like knee-high boots sort of accomplishes this with skinnies tucked in. However, leggings with a tunic or dress worn with ballet flats or sandals would just give me the ice-cream cone effect. Angie, what do you think about dressing my body type in leggings?

You will look great in the leggings look, Tanya. Keep us posted. I hope you try them too, Inge.

Tara! I absolutely see you in leggings and Antje has offered super footwear options. You have the green light on black shoes too. Aren’t I nice :0)

Leggings were extremely popular in HK last year and I saw lasses wear them in creative ways. I think that they have become a mainstream basic. There are loads of women in the fashion industry sporting them with uber smart dresses to tone down the dressiness of the dress. The effect is glorious. I love the edge.

Bella, a sweet little leggings look! You could pull those leggings up a little more too (so that you show more of your calf).

Sinead you are NOT too old. I have a client in her late 50’s who looks incredible in leggings. I’m all for the look and can’t wait to start sporting it again once it warms up.

Ellen, you'll look adorable in maternity leggings.

I would love to try, they look so cute on others. Unfortunately, I get bad flashbacks of the late '80's or early '90's of myself in stirrup pants & oversize denim shirts (LOL) when I think about them! I'm probably more of a pear or curvy pear maybe & am more self conscious on my lower 1/2 so I'm not sure if I could pull it off. It would be so fun to try though! I have friends that say my mental image of my body is different than it really is though so who knows - I'm trying to reconcile the 2 but I really think my mental image is right! Oops....digressing...

Great outfit! LOVE the red of the dress and how you put the whole look together.

I wonder if it would look even better if the leggings were pulled up higher so you show more of your calves. That's often the most flattering length. I pull mine up to about the point where the calf curve starts. You could experiment with different lengths in the mirror to check.

I do remember your original posts very well, Angie! Since you first posted about them I have wanted to try this look, but I have been put off because of my big calves. I would love to wear this during the hot hot days of LA summers. It seems like it would be cooler than jeans.

What is the best shoe to wear with this look? A flat? A wedge? Should the shoe be black or a lighter color?

Well I guess I am not sporting it, since you did ask that. I have flirted with the idea of wearing leggings with a short slip dress from the 90's.

I am trying to pick carefully which styles I adopt, since I have a fairly limited budget. I only want to buy enough clothes so I have enough clean suitable, clothes to wear and don't want clothes that will be out of fashion but not worn out.

I went ahead and ordered two pairs from F21: a black one that is about clamdigger length ( as Maya suggested) and a charcoal one that's mid calf ( like you suggest Angie). I am technically breaking my shopping ban but they wore $15 total so hopefully that doesn't count I really hope they will work for me and I will like the look. If not, I will delegate them to sleepwear.

Before I go into more detail, does anyone remember these posts?

http://youlookfab.com/2007/07/.....o-spend-7/

Tanya, I have skinny calves too. Leggings give my calves shape if I place the hem right in the middle of my calf. You should experiment with Maya’s suggestion as well. I sometimes wear them that length too. SO comfy. Please give them a try when budget allows.

Shana and Antje, you crack me up.

I’m not going to persuade anyone to wear this look. It’s got to work for you and you need to like it. I’m merely reminding you that the look is there when you're sick of jeans. It’s practical, comfortable, affordable and worth a go if you haven’t already done so. Leggings can be a fab little look.

I'm another not sporting this look. I haven't tried very hard because I guess it seems like a look for younger women. A couple of aquaintances wore this look last winter/spring and they probably did it right but my eye never adjusted to it. I can understand it tucked into boots but haven't found the right pieces. Tutoring and visuals from you might convince me.

I wear leggings a few times this year and I agree it's so comfortable, especially worn under long tunic. I went to belly dance class with my outfit and I felt so comfortable... Of course... They are yoga pants. Some girls in my college wear them as pants and I really hate this look.

I bought mine at a Giordano in Macau. The fabric is much better and softer than the ones sold in Canadian stores.

At first I was very apprehensive about leggings. I still shudder when I remember the 90s look Shana described: leggings, chunky socks, ill fitting sweater, turtleneck. Yikes.

Then Angie's enthusiasm convinced me to give them another try. I started wearing them around the house instead of lounge pants and later with a knee length denim skirt. This winter I scored a lovely dark green cotton tunic from Esprit (probably my favorite find this winter) just for leggings wear (and maybe skinny denim). And that's been my casual uniform for the first two weeks after my surgery (my belly didn't appreciate anything more constricting, even hose).

Right now I'm looking for new pairs, both long and cropped.

Lala, give it a try and post pictures. I think this look is great on any age. It's all about how you wear it. I'm guessing if you're wearing a Tory Burch dress you aren't going to look silly at all.

I love leggings (it took me a while to come around, but when I did, I really did) and have worn a black microfibre pair that are actually long underwear (I got them at Mark's Work Wearhouse, for the Canadians in the house--$20 per pair) all winter long under dresses, with boots. Yesterday I wore an oversized grey turtleneck sweater over them with my brown Frye Paige boots. It was so comfortable, cute, and warm.

In the spring and summer I love leggings with tunics or dresses and flats or sandals. They're great for spring especially because they add extra warmth.

My rule for tunics and dresses is that they must cover my cheeks completely when standing and when i bend over (this depends a bit on the amount of volume in the skirt and how loose or tight it is--looser or more voluminous skirts or tunics leave a bit more wiggle room). I do not want to leave the house looking like I forgot my pants. That's my biggest fashion pet peeve!

Thanks Laura and Maya - I've been shopping in the wrong department!!! And the leggings that I've found were like footless pantyhose - like you, Maya, I wanted a thicker knit (I guess like the ones I wore in the early to mid-90's!)

OK - here's another question, can I really pull off the legging look with a tunic dress (Tory Burch dress) so I can get more seasonal milage out of it? I'm in my early 40's. I usually live by the saying "if you wore it the first time around, DON'T wear it the second time!"

Lala, BR does have leggings but I think they're only available online:

http://bananarepublic.gap.com/.....submit.y=0

Also try the BP department at Nordies. I found my white leggings there. I prefer actual leggings that are a thicker knit fabric, as opposed to footless tights which are just pantyhose and don't give as much coverage. They are much more comfy and feel like knit pants but aren't as sloppy.

Lala, you can find leggings in any hosiery department. I have some from Hue, and of course there is always Spanx!
