My Dad retired at 79 when he sold the farm and moved to a villa in a retirement village. He still has the same car now, he is 86.

Funnily enough he has flown down to the South Island this morning for a trip. He has rented a car down there - I wondered if the rental agency would accept him at 86 but they have! t

At 61, DH and I remain a two car family. I have had my own car since age 15 and cannot imagine sharing one with DH. My commute to work is 90 minutes on a highway that has a ton of trucking. Safety is always a concern because the section I drive has a lot of accidents, especially in winter weather, which lasts 6 to 7 months of the year. In fact, DH took my car to get the snow tires removed yesterday. We tend to keep our cars until it’s no longer feasible to repair them. In October 2025 I purchased a new Toyota Highlander Hybrid. It’s our third. When we buy a new car, DH takes the older of the remaining cars and I take the new car, mostly with the hope that a newer vehicle will be more reliable and have the most up to date safety equipment. The Highlander Hybrid we retired in October was purchased in 2006. It was 20 years old and needed a new hybrid cooling system among other expensive repairs. DH took the 2019 Highlander Hybrid. Before the Highlanders we had a Honda Odyssey van that survived in our family for 28 years. For a while we were a three vehicle family with four drivers. We have previously owned two Toyota Camry’s. Even thought the Honda van lasted so long, we have obviously been fans of Toyota.

We hope to retire around age 67. I suspect we will maintain two vehicles at first, especially if we stay in the same location. There is no public transportation and nothing here is walking distance, not even the public schools. My best guess is the Highlander’s will still be viable at that time.

Great thread! I have watched a number of couples try to downsize to 1 car in the past few years only to end up very frustrated and go back to 2, for the time being. My family only had 1 car when I was growing up and it was a huge problem for all the reasons.

For me, the most important thing about a car is that it starts every single time I get in it, forever! We have owned many Toyotas - my first car, which I got at age 26, was a 1989 manual Corolla, so stripped down it didn't even have a mirror on the passenger door. We've had a couple of Camrys and a Sienna minivan that our older son drove during college, dubbed by his friends "The Mom Van". I loved driving that minivan.

I live in a suburb of DC so even taking public transportation usually involves driving to the metro station. We've always had 2 cars, and sometimes 3, because, even when old, our cars haven't failed and they're paid off. One of the Toyota Camrys with high mileage became the boys' car when they were each in high school. When our younger son left for a military academy in 2016 we sold that Camry to his classmate across the street, so it moved from our side to their side of the street! (I think that boy's sister is still driving it in Florida).

I drove a 2012 Mazda 3 for 13 years, and we still have it. Super reliable little car, and has served me well. It's a hard and noisy ride for a long trip, but a great around-city car with its dents and dings. We bought a Subaru Outback in March 2025, the timining was mainly to avoid the tariffs. Great car, well- recommended by so many friends and family. It does occur to me that, at our ages, there may not be many more new cars since we hang on to them for so long.

Such an interesting topic. Thank you for sharing Carla. I'm 61 and DH is 64, we both still work and cars are required. He has a 14 yo truck with 180k+ miles and I have a 2022 Toyota Highlander that is our people mover and travel car. We are thinking by the time we replace the Toyota there will be better self driving options and we will likely opt for something self driving. Public transportation is not an option in our area but we have watched how decline happens when the elderly lose their "car" due to physical decline. At what point we go to one car we are not sure. My parents moved to one in their mid 80's but my DH parents never had more than one and it worked. Aging in place for us will require transportation that we supply and thankful it appears self driving is a real option.

DH and I live very close to our city centre and shared a car until we had a child (17 years ago) when we decided that our VW Beetle with 2 doors was highly impractical for a baby seat and became a 2-car family. I mainly drove the Beetle, unless on baby duties, and he drove the bigger car. We now have two VWs, a VW T-Roc and a smaller T-Cross, both are petrol cars with very low mileage as we can walk locally to shops etc. As our running costs are low and it did not make sense for us to buy significantly higher priced electric vehicles. We keep our vehicles for at least 10 years ang then trade them in on a new model, which is why we have ended up with two VWs.

Last year I was involved in a car crash which wrote-off my VW T-Cross but the airbags were amazing and did a great job of keeping me injury free. We replaced that car with a new T-Cross.

DH is retired and I am working from home, so now DS is driving, he is in 'my' T-Cross, off to school and I won't be getting that car back but can still drive it occasionally. My parents bought me a Corolla when I first started driving, so my husband and I thought it would be nice to let my son also have the bonus of being given a safe first car. We only have parking for 2 cars, so between the three of us, we manage with the pooling arrangement.

I have a plug-in hybrid SUV (Hyundai Tuscon) which is perfect for the driving that I do around town. It plugs into a regular outlet in the garage and gets about 50km (30mi) before it switches to gas. It's also great for longer trips - easy on gas and super comfortable.

I always had my own car I needed mine to commute to work. My husband always had a car even thought he could walk to work. Neither of us like driving. I retired 4 years ago and 2 years after retiring sold my car as I literally never drove it. I walk everywhere as we live in a suburban area within easy walking distance of all amenities we also have good public transport for going into city centre although I could walk if necessary. We still have a Peugeot SUV which is 4 years old. I rarely drive it but make myself drive every week somewhere as I am afraid I will loose my ability to drive and or my confidence on the road.

Living in an area that is between major cities but with no public transport, it would not be feasible to go without a car. I’ve owned my own car ever since I was 18 (when I was in high school my dad and I shared one), when my parents bought my dad a newer car and I took over the old one (a 1972 Dodge Dart, which was already long in the tooth at that point). When I was 21 and had been working, I financed and bought on my own for the first time — a used 2yo Toyota Celica, that I happily drove for nine years (my BFF bought it from me and got another few years out of it!).

Now I drive a Porsche Macan that I bought new in 2017. It’s just about to have the first real repair ever — at nearly 100k miles, the actuator for the turbo is failing. Not a huge repair, and I expect to drive this car for several more years. My husband has a 2012 Range Rover that he loves and has just had some work done so that hopefully he’ll get another several years out of that too. So we are in a place where we are trying to extend the lives of two very nice vehicles.

We still have a Ford truck that came home from the Texas ranch, which is now our towing vehicle for the Airstream when we take trips. It’s also useful for hauling home stuff from garden shopping and the like, and it’s a vehicle we can pile our big dogs into without worrying about them damaging the nice interiors of our other vehicles.

I am my father’s daughter — I believe in getting a good reliable car and driving it as long as it remains reliable. My strategy was letting go of a car when it started to cost more to repair and caused more stress, especially when I was single and commuting to work, and needed reliability above all. Over the years since that first Celica, I’ve owned three other Toyotas and a Mazda (which I thought was totally underrated — what a great car it was!).

We will let go of the truck when we sell the Airstream someday. My husband had a Tesla for a while (one of the first Model S), and it was a great car, but once he wasn’t commuting for work anymore, it didn’t make sense to keep it. Our garage is wired for a charger though, so we would consider electric.

I would be more tempted by an electric/hybrid. I take long road trips sometimes in remote areas where I would not want to be far from charging. Mileage ranges are improving though, so who knows what the market will be like in a few years the next time we’re thinking of a new vehicle.

We have 3 cars in our 4-adult house (we all work remote since 2020). My Honda van is over 20 years old, and DH’s (inherited) Cadillac is much older. The third car, a Honda Accord shared by our adult kids, is just a few years old. We keep our cars for a very long time! When one of the older cars dies, we will get an EV or hybrid.

DH takes good care of the cars, and I dread getting a new one and worrying about that first dent. We expect to keep driving for many more years—and unless we move, will need to. We live in a car-centric suburb.

My last two cars were Honda CRVs. They were fantastic. I bought them slightly used (about 2 years old with low mileage) and drove the first one for a few years until I was in a car accident, and it was a write-off. Then I replaced it with a two-year-old CRV and drove it for almost 18 years. The mechanic told me it was no longer safe to drive.
My husband and I had decided that when my CRV was done, we would go to one car. He has a 12-year-old Toyota RAV4. It has been great, and we like it, but with Garthy and all our stuff, it is a bit too small for road trips. When we need to replace it, we might get a bigger SUV.
We live in a very snowy, icy environment, and a 4-wheel drive SUV feels necessary. When I walk around my neighbourhood, I see SUVs in the driveways.

I am not a "car" person. I want a car that works, does the job, and lasts a long time. When I am finished with a car, it is because it is no longer safe to drive.

Mr. ND and I are the owners of two geriatric vehicles, a 2007 Toyota RAV-4 and a 2011 VW Tiguan. Both vehicles are used but super reliable. Despite both of us being retired, we need the flexibility of having two vehicles. When we go on road trips, we use my Tiguan. It is recommended (required) that the Tiguan use premium gasoline, but I've always used mid-grade gasoline with no issue. We will use the Tiguan later this year when we leave for Arizona in mid-November because it is a great car for the open road. It will definitely be a new experience driving from Seattle to Mesa AZ.

I wouldn’t describe myself as a “car person” but my car is still important to me as far as appealing to me in some way, I named my cars when I was young, giving them some personality. And I had a hankering to own a small red convertible, I decided by the age of 50. I achieved this at age 48 with my small Mazda MX5, bought for $7000 (it was old, 1991) in 2009 and sold for $5,500 in 2021, 12 years later! I had replaced the roof during my ownership.
I then bought, at age 60 in 2021, my first ever brand new car. Another Mazda, which I felt used to, a small blue Mazda 2. I considered a hybrid but decided a small efficient internal combustion engine was not that bad for the environment compared with bigger gas guzzlers.
We own 2 cars in our household though my husband mostly cycles to work. We are both aiming towards retirement, both aged 65. His vehicle is older, a 2009 Toyota Corolla station wagon. I want him to upgrade it, when working less, as it feels old and tired to me. Neither vehicle does high mileage so the current high petrol cost is not too much of a worry to us, we are lucky that way. Both cars seem very reliable.
I like the freedom of having one each.

We are both retired and have 2 vehicles. A 2012 Honda civic and 2019 Toyota Rav4. Both have been reliable gems. We could probably get by with just 1 vehicle except that my husband golfs in the summer and these golf courses aren't nearby so he is often away for at least 6 hours at a time. Going down to one vehicle will probably be a more serious consideration once he no longer golfs.

Having 2 cars is absolutely essential for Casa ST! We live several miles from the nearest (small) town, and there's very limited public transport, plus we travel extensively for work and medical appointments.
I swear by Toyotas. I drive a Prius, which I Love It's going strong at nearly 300k miles, and I've heard of them getting to 400!
Our "people mover" is a Subaru. It fits us, our parents, and their wheelchair/ rollator with no issue. DH loves it, but it's much newer and overcomplicated, so more that can (and does) go wrong.

I’m 60 and I have never had my own car. My office life was downtown, I used to walk or take a streetcar for that. I’m retired now and definitely don’t need/want it. We live in the center of the large city, in a walkable neighborhood. My DH is 62 and his work was until recently always in suburbs. He buys a new car once every 7-8 years. His current car is old and he will be replacing it this or next year. He wants to buy a hybrid vehicle, something small. He still works and needs a car to get to the office. Also, our kids are going to buy a house in a rural area, we are planning to visit frequently.

We are in our 50s (mid to late) and own two cars (at our house). We also have a work van but that never really comes home except for rare occasions when we buy something random.

I drive a 2019 Subaru Outback - it was a work car but I have purchased it off work due to the Fringe Benefit Tax. It is practical for carrying our bikes, towing a trailer, and at times lending to others.

Jon drives a 2023 Tesla Model Y. In NZ most of our electricity is hydropower and our gas is very expensive $3 per litre. NZ does not drill for oil. I wish it wasn't a Tesla in many ways because of the ownership but it is a lovely car to drive. I drive it regularly.

Woop -de -doo for my Subaru. My Fav uncle influenced me to buy my first car, a Subaru. Drove it until it got hit by an errant tire crashing into my windshield while driving on the highway to a visit for work. I did not know at the time how lucky I was.
Next Subaru lasted over 100 thousand miles in WI. We were living a ferry boat away from home and the Ferry guys heard my ticking carburetor and knew I was on my way.
As a family of 6 we had a nice van that did not survive a tornado.
We replaced it with another van but once the kiddos were gone we went back to our trusted Subaru.

We have 2. A Nissan Rouge which is mine. An a Toyota Tundra. My husband should not drive at all so the. Toyota is an issue. He will not sign the title for me to sell it so it’s here. I do not want an electric car for the reasons listed above.
We could definitely do with one car and basically do. It is extremely hard to get a man to give up his car.

I can't speak to this, since we haven't had a car in 25 years, but I'm interested in the answers, since we might be needing one in the next year. I'm thinking small electric SUV.

We have one Toyota Camry Hybrid, bought new (our first ever new car!) in 2015. It looks a bit dinged up now (due to, ahem, some parking lot encounters on DH's part) but works just fine.

Neither of us are car people. When we lived in Kingston, we both walked almost everywhere -- the car was for occasional trips to Toronto or Montreal and some of our larger grocery runs, also for ferrying the kid to lessons, for my trips to see aging parents, and so on.

Now we live in a suburb that makes the use of a car more necessary, but we still get by with just the one vehicle.

Mr. Suz is now retired for the most part. I work outside the home a couple of days a week. He gets the car most days because he is our main grocery shopper. I take it to work, or sometimes he drops me off and I take transit home. I bike (on my e-bike) or take transit almost everywhere else. (I rarely bike to work because the route is rather unsafe.) This arrangement works for us in this climate.

We now have 3 drivers in the family because our kid has their learners' and will soon be fully licenced. We expect to give this car to them eventually, and get something else for ourselves. But we will stick to one vehicle. Mr. Suz is older and probably won't be driving for too many more years. As it is, neither of us likes to drive at night. When the kid moves out, we hope to move to a more central location where driving will not be as necessary -- we'll use transit, Ubers, maybe ride shares, and so on. And for me, my bike, as long as I am able to ride it.

I had a bad, like really bad, experience with a used car in my 20s and swore not to do that again. But you know the motto around here, never say never. In 2019 when I had to replace my VW diesel, I bought a certified used SUV. Best decision. Got a car that had been leased, low mileage and certified by the car manufacturer-so if there was an issue they would cover it, as well as they included the original warranty.
A couple of tips for what worked for me. I used the brands website, put in what I was looking for, and kept extending the search zone. I did everything via email and text. Yup never even talked with a car salesman ! Ended up buying for a dealer almost 200 miles away from me, had them deliver the car to my doorstep. The dealer took care of all the paperwork. It was the best experience I’ve ever had buying a car.
I have a hybrid, and for the size, the mileage is great. If I was replacing it today, I’d get the same make/model but I’d look for a plug in hybrid

We have a Kia EV as our main car and I really like it. Until recently we had a Prius hybrid as well but sold it and bought a used Honda pickup. I actually never thought we would own a gasoline car again but so far my husband (the truck is his vehicle, let’s be honest) mainly uses it to haul lumber to build me cedar planter boxes and I got to retire from moving the Prius every 72 hours (city street parking- only 1 vehicle fits in the driveway) so, huzzah! No complaints. We both work at home so that simplifies negotiations for driving the EV.

My biggest regret is selling one of our cars when DH (temporarily ) retired . It was my idea and I thought we were being all responsible and eco friendly / never mind saving a lot of money on insurance , maintenance , gas etc . Guess who doesn’t have a car anymore ??! He drives it to work ( drops me off en route ) to work and back every day and I take transit home . had my own car since I was 18 . I feel like I’ve lost my independence and it’s a f-ing pain in the neck to always have to check first if the car is available . There, I said . Lol. If I win the lottery , the first thing I’m doing is buying myself a car .

ETA : the increase in the price of cars since we sold 5 yrs ago has prohibited us from buying a second car again . The car we sold has probably tripled in value . Crazy times .

We have two SUVs. Our town gets snow and if we want to drive over the mountain pass to visit family, we need AWD. Although we’re both retired, we are often out doing different things, at the same time, and the nearest bus line is almost a mile from our house. So we have a Subaru Outback and a Toyota RAV4 hybrid. The RAV is old but has low mileage. The Subaru has been our road car, and may need replacing in the next few years.

We’ve talked about what we’ll do WRT cars. In the future, we’ll probably make the RAV our road car and get a tiny EV for our in town trips, and just make it work. I have a friend with a Tesla and she loves it, but like MsMary, I don’t want to give Musk any of my money. Interesting note: there is a Tesla battery plant in the area, and a Tesla engineer lives across the street, and another one lives right behind us.

My husband and I still have our own cars even though we are retired and could get along with one car fairly easily. (We live in So Cal and there aren't really any options other than driving so at least one car is a necessity.) He is a "car guy" and drives a snazzy two-seater, and I drive a small SUV. They are both gas powered for a variety of reasons (batteries run on electricity that is still generated by fossil fuels, we don't want to support Elon Musk, the batteries are environmental hazards when used up, we don't want to be at the mercy of looking for a charging station, etc.). Both are in good shape, fairly low mileage, and I am hoping they will see us through to the finish line (he's 79, I'm 68).

For most of my adult life I had access to one car. DH and I shared a family car that was usually an SUV type due to living in a very snowy and remote northern Ontario community. The community was small enough that one could get around with relative ease on foot or bicycle. There was okay urban transit (bus) as well. Additionally, DH and I worked at offices that were minutes from each other - so commuting together was never a problem.

12 years ago (at 53 yo) I ended up with a car of my own. DH was starting work in the place where we would eventually relocate, and did not want to leave me without transportation for the several months before our relocation. I’m not a car person, so asked for ‘something cheap with good mileage.’ That is how I became the owner of ‘Beautiful’ (license plate BTFL ###) a Ford Focus.

BTFL is getting old, but hasn’t cost much to repair. She did get some recent body work on one side, and needs the same on the other. We’re going to keep her going for as long as possible since we are a multigenerational household, and DS#1 uses my vehicle from time to time. She is almost indispensable now, since my Mom (88 yo) moved to the community where I live. Mom has mobility issues, so I drive her to her (many) medical appointments, grocery shopping, church, etc.

DH uses ‘The People Carrier’ - an SUV which I hardly touch these days. We bought it to replace our last family vehicle (with very high mileage) after we retired 8 years ago. Mileage where we now live doesn’t get racked up like it did when we lived ‘up north’, and since we retired there’s no commute to work. We used to trade in the family vehicle after 6-8 years! Not even considering it now. SUV in great shape.

DH and I have been talking, thinking ahead, and wondering if we should replace BTFL, give her up when she is no longer dependable keep or trade in the ‘People Carrier’, etc, etc. We are 65 and 68 yo and still NEED at least one vehicle.

What are your car stories and if you are in your later years, what are your thoughts on car ownership? Do you share your vehicle? Do you use alternate transportation? Do you fancy/love your car? Electric, gas, hybrid? Please share your thoughts and experiences.
