Barbara Diane -- I'm glad it seems colourful! I was thinking as I packed that it would be way too neutral a capsule for someone like Angie, but for me it's just the right amount of colour, especially since they all play nicely together.

Joy -- For whatever reason, I've never ascribed to the 2:1 tops-to-bottoms ratio that many use. I find my pants get dirty at about the same rate as my shirts. Possibly because pants are at the right level for my kid to use as a napkin? Possibly because we sit on the ground a lot? I'm not sure. The necklace is a bit of a tradition; my great-grandmother gave it to my grandmother, who brought it with her to the US from the Netherlands (by way of Indonesia and Australia, long story!), and passed it down to me. I've always felt like it probably likes having the chance to go back to Europe, so I've brought it every time I go. Since I wear it all the time, I don't worry too much about losing it. Much more concerned about phone/passport/wallet!

Nemosmom -- I definitely didn't get bored. I kind of wished I'd had a little bit more earth-tone in the mix, just because it is *so* trendy everywhere right now. Black/white/olive is my go-to palette, but lately I've been wanting to go even a little warmer, with rust or mustard instead of olive and navy instead of black. I don't really have the right pieces to do that for a summer trip (my mustard pieces are more for fall), but it's something to think about for next summer... The only other thing I had to be a little careful about was not ending up in all-black. I'd thought that the black skirt and the black tank would make a nice two-piece dress, and that I could layer the light blue shirt over them. I did that once, but felt a little blah once it got too hot for the top layer. I'm not a big column-of-colour person tbh. I also felt like my black cardi was a little too dark to wear with my Icebreaker dress -- not the end of the world, since the dress/leggings combo was mostly for mountain days, where I was bringing the Pata jacket as my warm layer anyway.

Aliona -- That tote-pack comes in lots of colours! I think REI had some on sale recently. I love being able to switch between backpack and tote, because my 5 yo likes me to carry him on my back when he gets tired. I was brave and wore the midi skirt on the plane, knowing I could use my puffy jacket as a lap-blanket. I get cold when I fly, but I was also worried about being hot once we arrived.

kkards -- I don't think I've ever had anything go unworn! Except on car trips, where I'll indulge in a few extras and "just in case" items. I approach packing like a backpacker, so it's all about essentials.

Thank you, Unfrumped, Notsaf, Sterling and Angie. :)

This is one of the most interesting and versatile travel capsules I’ve seen. I’m wowed. Thanks for posting—I absolutely love your pack, sad it’s sold out but I’m going to try to track it down. Also impressed you flew in a skirt. I’ve always wanted to do that, it’s such an elegant way to roll, but I’m always too cold on a plane.

Wow, LaPed! What a perfectly planned capsule for your trip! Did you feel like you had enough variety? It looks like everything was really mixable, yet you took so few pieces!

Sounds like you did well. Your list looked heavy on bottoms and light on tops that could be layered. You were brave to bring your great grandmother’s necklace. I have had things, especially jewelry, taken from my suitcase on trips so no loner take anything that I would not want to lose. It sounds like the merino wool worked very well for this trip. I hope you enjoyed your adventure.

Trip took place the second half of August, in France, Germany and the Czech Republic. Mostly city, with a few trail and mountain days mixed in.

Travel outfit: linen midi-skirt with rugby tee and black cardigan, sneakers because they were bulkier.

Nothing went unworn, and I wore everything pretty evenly. I did laundry once, at the end of week one.

Wore the merino dress with or without leggings underneath. Wore the oxford shirt open as a topper and on its own as a top. Because I’m RATE to the core, I didn’t iron anything, just hung stuff near the shower as needed.

Didn’t really miss sandals or shorts. It wasn’t terribly hot except for our last day, when it hit 90. Spent most of the day at the Louvre before heading to the airport, so we weren’t out much in the heat.

No accessories to speak of. Didn’t want to fuss with a scarf, so brought one necklace -- small silver pendant that belonged to my great-grandmother -- on a chain that was a good length to go with pretty much everything. Carried either my nylon belt-bag or a convertible pack-tote (both Patagonia).

Most is shown below in Finds or Photos (Photo 4 is the skirt I have in olive; my Pata jacket has bright green trim, unlike the one in Photo 5).
