In the end I went with the Bellroy Melbourne Backpack in Black.

I really had a look quite thoroughly, and tried a few local stores but nothing fit my criteria which were:

- durable and easy to clean
- light for biking or city walking
- a bit cool looking
- big enough for my 14.5 inch laptop and associated gear
- holding a water bottle externally
- in this instance recycled material seems better than leather....

I ordered it last night. In this instance black seemed best as it won't show dirt easily and integrates with my work wardrobe which has black as the dark neutral.

https://bellroy.com/products/m.....f8119d3d47

I loved a few of the suggestions made upthread and the ones Rosie showed me were gorgeous!! But an Australian brand should be easier to get delivery from right now - our big cousins have become part of our travel bubble so we can head over there....

Haha Jenn- that time will come again that you can work in a coffee shop!! A new bag might be just the ticket as a celebration.

Thanks Suz. I could do panniers. I have a carrier on the back. I actually hadn't considered that.

Haha Angie....indeed....Jon is not so tech but the boys are....

I will consider panniers Isis... it might work well. Truth is if I had a meeting needing a bag I would drive as it would be out of our office.

Helena - pleased I could help - I found it fun!!

Suz - good advice. Your needs sound similar to mine (outside a pandemic) - I have a couple of zip bags I am using currently for mouse, charger etc but I think I can do a bit better. I need solid hard wearing things as I am a bit "careless" or absent minded. Love your pieces.

Rosie - those bags are lovely!! The pale blue is stunning. And yes there is all that lingo in this little rabbit hole. I will investigate further - the prices looked okay on those finds but I need to check if they were USD or NZD.

Thanks Jessi - that's what I have been doing - a couple of other bags do the trick but in my case I need bag organisational help!!

Fashintern - you sound neat and tidy. Yes a bag can be a bit hot at times - I am going to look at panniers too. It is an interesting field to look at.

Thanks all for the great suggestions.

BJ1111 - your bag looks great and your packing is very aspirational for me. Thanks for sharing.

Fashintern and Rachylou - I prefer a backpack for me. I have a dodgy shoulder and the weight of a laptop etc needs to be distributed over two shoulders.

Thanks Smittie - now I just need to use it... mmmmm not my best point

Shevia - haha we are in the same boat.

Suntiger - I like some of the tonics. Nice for a light no alcohol drink that tastes a bit better than soda. But I love beer too.....

Isabel - good point on the colour - I agree totally!! The one you posted looks great too. I would quite like something other than black but I need it to stay looking neat and tidy - so am thinking a dark colour is best for me.

So here are some photos of my backpack. What are not shown —two pairs of chopsticks, two disposable masks, a pair of no show socks that I hunted for last month and a pair of gloves I thought I lost.

I did find my vaccination card tho. So bonus!

Also I upgraded from a ziplock bag to an airline toilestries bag freebie for my peripherals.

Rachylou, the stability is one thing I was thinking of when I suggested messenger bags. They are also not as hot (to wear). Some backpacks can open on top & spill contents. That’s less likely with a messenger bag plus it is right there on your hip so you know what’s going on with it all the time.

I liked the grid carrier too back when. Now I don’t even use a laptop sleeve. I throw everything in a tote and have eliminated all accessory cables. Anyways... It occurs to me all the bike messengers carry a .... messenger bag. I think it’s not just a style thing, but that that tightly pulled strap across the chest is more stable. I thought I’d throw that out there...

:) Also live in a den of geeks! I am always the last to get a new phone around here because I am just not that into it. (Well I should say I am very into the functional aspects but a lot of the fancy stuff flies over my head.) Anyway, no advice as I carry around my stuff the old fashioned way .

I just have things in a little zip up pencil pouch, was probably from the Dollar Tree. That is, when I remember. Normally they just get tossed unceremoniously in my gigantic work bag!

I like that pack, too.

Also, what Isis says about panniers....I do find them super useful. I often use my bike for marketing and put all my veggies in there. I have a friend who has the fancier, removable pannier that will hold a laptop. Mine are removable, too, but they aren't really "carry-able" -- they're meant to be used on the bike. I can take them off to wash them or I suppose guard the contents.

I used a pannier made for a laptop when I was bike commuting (sometimes by ebike!) . It was made by an Australian company, Knog, and I love it, but unfortunately they don't make panniers anymore. Riding with a pannier on a bike is much cooler in the summer and much easier to turn around for a quick glance behind. The Knog bag had lots of extra pockets for gear.

Another option is to put your Furla bag and whatever you usually carry into a pannier and other bags into a pannier. Then leave the pannier in your office when you go to meetings I liked the Ortlieb backrollers for that, and they are waterproof which is nice if you get caught in a downpour

I have the bright yellow version but I see that there is a polka dot version! https://www.sierra.com/back-ro.....;utm_mediu

I was going to buy one of the Bellroy backpacks last year, but didn't in the end because I'm not travelling. But as soon as restrictions ease, I suspect I'll be back in the market for one. I have several of their other products and really love them. Love! (Some I have in Finds).

Among the things I have is the little pouch for holding cords, etc. I actually use this all the time (not just for travel). I keep it in a larger basket near my chair where I work and dip into it for my headphones, etc. when needed.

If you are going to be a cliché on your e-bike, I'm obviously joining you. I definitely ride my bike and carry my stuff when I do it! However, I more often put things in my panniers than on my back -- in fact, I'll often stuff my "fashion" backpack or purse (example in Finds) into the panier, along with dressier footwear, etc. Having said that, I haven't been carrying my laptop while riding and when I return to that, I think I would do as you are doing for that -- get a backpack that keeps it safe. I'm currently using an old Patagonia that is fabulous for function but is definitely gear. In terms of size, I think you are correct. Smaller packs can be tricky because they don't hold all you need/ want.

I like the cord containing system Jenn showed. The Bellroy pouch does have dividers and is surprisingly neat -- but the thing she showed looks even more organized. I do like the Bellroy for its size and shape -- it fits into spots that a larger or more squared off item might not.

Now you have led me to the EDC rabbit hole, thank you very much. See you on the other side! :)

I just did a bunch of research myself on this very issue-

I was looking for a backpack to take as my personal carry item when flying, but I don't fly very often ( hoping to do more in the future but...) so I was trying to see if I could make this new backpack for travel do double duty as my EDC for work ( I have been calling it my work bag until reading your post now I'm going to use your lingo EDC). If it's my EDC then I can justify spending more, because of CPW etc.

I found two gorgeous backpacks

Dagne Dover
https://www.dagnedover.com/col.....way-Medium

Lo and son
https://www.loandsons.com/coll.....-backpacks

Ultimately, I did not pull the trigger on either because I have a bad shoulder and have been using a rolling backpack for a few years and for health reasons, I really need to stick with my rolling bag.....But for a week or so I was happily looking at gorgeous backpacks and reviews until I decided I was about to purchase something for a lifestyle I don't lead..... If I start traveling more, may indulge in one of these gorgeous bags.

What I ended up buying for my needs: I went to Marshalls, and in the men's section, found a swiss something or other, minimalist black backpack. It was nice to go in person and see and feel the choices.

As far as a tech pouch- I have 2 le sport sac pouches, I guess they were once makeup bags? I picked them up in a thrift store at some point years ago for maybe $5. They are both colorful, lay flat, one zippered pouch.

here is an example of what I mean
https://poshmark.com/listing/2.....886844ae8d

I keep my phone charger, headphones, wireless mouse, hub, extra pen and a couple of index cards in there. it fits nicely into the front zipper pouch

Good luck finding something lovely and if you buy the dagne or lo and sons please let me know how you like them.... havent given up my dream of my shoulder getting better and getting a sleek backpack

I’ve never used one of those cases designed just for cords, etc, but I do wrap mine up neatly, like a sailor. When I carried a very small bag, I kept it very organized. I posted photos of it to one of Jenn’s threads once. I did use a simple mesh organizer bag for that, but generally my preference is to get bags that have good dividers and pickets to begin with, and plan out their use before I purchase. My son learned early on that putting mama’s wallet or keys in the wrong pocket was the same as not returning them at all, and was not something he wanted to do!

I haven’t seen EDC sites. I know you are coming up on winter, so a backpack could work for now. Once it’s the slightest bit warm out, I find them too warm on a bike, and prefer carrying a messenger bag (does anyone use that term anymore?) crossbody. A good rack on the bag of the bike or basket works well too. Have you looked into panniers? Some of them have shoulder/crossbody straps as well. That might be a good idea for going from bike to work. Two brands to look into are Ortlieb and Basil.

I do use various pouches for cords and earbuds and stuff, but they’re not special, just random zippered cloth bags that I’ve picked up along the way.

Oh that's cool Jenn. I really could do with a better system than what I have..... I am one of those people that has to empty out my bag to find my keys that were at the bottom :( That could work well for me.

I have decided to really just have a cool backpack which is perfect for 90% of my work days and just take a handbag for the days when I need one which is really about 1 day a fortnight (or even less over the last year).

Oh, I’m obsessed with everyday carry photos! I’m so nosy about what people haul around in their bags/pockets.

I haven’t had need of a laptop bag in a while (soon, I hope) but when I did, I loved these Grid-It organizers instead of pouches. I have a couple different sizes, a small one for day use and a larger one for travel.

A couple of years ago I was considering (and asked the forum for help) getting a new work tote to carry my laptop. In the end I found an old laptop bag and purchased a second hand furla - which I love!!

But my system is not quite working for me for the following reasons:
1) The laptop bag is a bit scruffy and dated and not quite right. This did not matter in 2020 but in 2021 it is starting to matter.
2) I have started bike commuting one day a week so a backpack would work better ( it is a 30km round trip).
3) I want a bag that fits my laptop and all my gear. For meetings and formal occasions I will use my Furla handbag. For conferences and general days I can use a stylish backpack.

I think I am going to get a Bellroy bag (Australian brand) that specialise in this type of gear. I am leaning to the Melbourne backpack as in the photo (probably in black though).

In doing some research I found a new acronym (EDC - every day carry), youtube channels dedicated to the carry market, and a whole lot of tech pouches and information that was a whole new world to me.

My sons and husband seem determined for me to be higher tech than my normal inclinations are to be, so I have apple earbuds, wireless headphones for zoom calls, Alexa Echo, a laptop and a phone.... The Echo will stay at home. But the rest come to and from work with me.

A few questions:

1) Do you use tech pouches for chargers, earbuds etc to keep them organised?
2) Does anyone have a laptop backpack they love? I think I need 20L size at least - I am tall so won't be dwarfed by this.
3) If I wear this backpack with this tech in it and ride my e-bike (handed on by my Dad who sadly can't ride it any more) am I a cliche?

And one of the videos I watched showed the capacity of the bag by how many craft beer cans he could fit in the bag. That made me laugh - although I think we have peached peak beard/craft beer/hipster and are sliding into mullets and shags with seltzers and no- alcohol tonics?

This post is very tongue in cheek if you can't guess......
