Claire, that's too bad about those patent leather shoes! What a downer.

Yeah, I think the belt is a goner. Too bad...it was just what I wanted. But it's a simple style, so I'm hoping I can find another one in the boys' section. I can still use it as a placeholder until I can get a newer one. Lesson learned!

Oh no! I had/have (it's in purge-a-tory) a genuine alligator belt that responded well to gluing--can't remember what kind of glue I used-- but it was only cracked in a few places, and might have been bonded of layers (or the skin was just a different animal, literally) than your Docker belt is. I also had some real patent leather shoes that ended up being cracked all over (from a thrift store, also) once I got them home and saw them in better light. There was no cure for that, alas.

Lisap, the belt says "100% leather" on the back, so I know that it's leather.

Joyce, I thought about taking it to a shoe repair too. I'm wondering, though, if it would be cheaper just to buy a similar belt. This one appears to be a boys' belt from Dockers. It was very simple, so I might be able to find one just like it in the boys' dept. I never thought of shopping in boys', ha ha.

Anna, I'm guessing you're probably right. I think maybe the leather was dried out, and the belt probably did indeed look fine until I subjected it to stress. It cracked under stress, ha ha.

I did read this yesterday Gigi , but wasn't sure what to say. I really doubt surface cracks in leather can be changed/repaired. My guess is maybe it's not leather?

I got what I thought was a leather belt in quite good condition at Goodwill yesterday and was very pleased with myself. Well, I wore it today, and I discovered that once the belt was around my waist and was flexed (not just hanging straight), there are a lot of tiny surface cracks that show up. I tried putting some leather conditioner on it, but that didn't help much. I'm scared to try shoe polish, because I don't want polish residue to rub off on my clothes. Any suggestions? Or just chalk this up as a $2.99 learning experience?
