Janet on "Careful shopping"

Mary Beth, funny you ask this. I just took a look at that jacket this morning, as I was putting something else away in the closet. The seam hits right across my elbow. I'm not sure I'd ever wear a short-sleeve jacket, but it's something worth thinking about. I'm concerned that cutting off the sleeves at the shoulder seam will result in a slightly too-wide shoulder to work on me as a vest. The other denim vests I have had are cut a little narrower on the shoulder, which works better on me because I have uneven shoulders -- literally, one is wider than the other (sigh, scoliosis and torsion). When sleeveless styles hit at a certain wider point, they seem to emphasize that unevenness. But to cut in further would mean needing to go to the tailor and have a new finish put on the arm openings. Not a deal-breaker, since I do like the style and fit of this jacket, but I'm not 100% sure it's worthwhile since I don't wear the denim vest I already own a whole lot.

I'm impressed at how curated your collection is! I really like the idea of a vest, but I'm also curious to know what would happen if you took a pair of dressmaker shears, and cut the sleeve at the offending seam, and maybe open the seam up just an inch? It might make a really cool short-sleeve denim jacket, and if you remove the weight of the lower sleeve, that seam might not be uncomfortable anymore.

Well, it’s a totally different kind of shopping! Browsing a clothing boutique when I don’t have any expectation or need or deadline is relaxing to me, and engages my eye and brain in a different way than scouring (mostly online) multiple sources and outlets for a checklist of items that meet various requirements for aesthetics, size, wattage, function, etc. Plus, home fixtures are much more permanent and you have to live with the choices every day. Oh, and shopping for the home stuff means that hubs has to like it too! Lots more pressure there!

It can be fun to try on different looks and imagine the different people we would be wearing them. Nice to know who you are/what actually suits your style. You’ve got a varied capsule of jeans jackets now.

But how you can think about shopping in the midst of a remodel, with all those purchase decision, idk!

Sounds like you made some great purchases. It just makes perfect sense to buy items that you know will be workhorses. Frankly I’m not sure why we stray so often from this fundamentally sound strategy :).
I’m a big wearer of denim-type jackets. I especially like them paired with a long skirt.

I’ve somehow amassed a lot of denim jackets. I do wear them all though! So I approve of your new addition. :-)

I’m intrigued by the Lilla P shirt. Summer tops are so difficult for me…this looks like something non-clingy that’s a step up from a tee yet still casual enough for daily life.

Lisa, the Lilla P top is a cotton jersey! Not woven. So it's nicely drapey. I think the stock picture does it absolutely no favors. I think Zappos has it in stock. The white version has black buttons, which I'm not sure about.

I laugh a little at having multiple denim jackets... but then I realize that I DO wear them! I particularly like them for dressing down a dress or skirt, and I find that they're especially good with black pants.

I needed a break from shopping for light fixtures, paint colors, and faucets...so I checked out my favorite local boutique last week. I tried on a few things, and some looked nice (some were truly not for me!). But after some thought and looking at my closet, I chose two to come home with me. Both are what I'd consider elevated essentials. One is a denim jacket -- the Janelle from L'Agence. I've tried on a few denim jackets lately. Other than my upside-downable jacket, which is a really specific style, I haven't invested in a more classic denim jacket in nearly a decade. My old ones are below:

- I rarely wear the Paige two-toned one anymore (waves at my jacket twin Angie), and somehow it keeps escaping the donate pile because it looks nice when I try it on, so I keep it in the holding zone. I'm not sure it's me anymore.
- the white jacket was bought at Bloomingdales in NYC on a YLF meetup with Angie, nearly 10 years ago! I wear it in warmer weather. It's very classic and fitted, and doesn't button now (I was 1-2 sizes smaller then), but I rarely close jackets anyway). It may be time to update, although it still looks good for a classic fitted jacket
- the Levis deconstructed trucker jacket is fun, but it has a seam across the elbow in the sleeve that makes it not so comfortable to wear unless I layer it over sleeves, and even then, I still feel it. So I have mixed feelings on it. Maybe some day I'll cut the sleeves off and make it a vest.
- I also have an old Mavi denim jacket in a light blue distressed wash. It's also over a decade old and fits a lot like the white one. I wear it a lot in the warmer weather when it's not too hot, and it's great for travel. Great for popping over a dress or skirt too because the length is good.

So I pulled the trigger on the L'Agence denim jacket in the first find. It's very stretchy, which I like for a jacket (not as much for jeans). Super comfortable, and gently fitted. Not too boxy, not too slim. I already cut the tags and wore it on Saturday over a graphic tee with my black cargo joggers and heeled booties.

I also got the black button-front Lilla P top in Finds. It's very oversized, so I bought it to fit closer than it does on the model (I got a XS), for a less boxy appearance. It's pleasantly drapey and light, and will be nice for summer when I want a black top that's not a basic tee.

So I'm being careful in shopping these days to add only things that I know I will wear. Updates on old classic favorites like denim jackets and black tops are a good bet! I have lots of great stuff already and am trying to enjoy what I have, remixing and rewearing!
