I am just reading this now and following your decision process has been very uplifting. How wonderful to have those choices, that's such a great place to be. Also love hearing that you were honest with your boss about what you wanted and he had already planned to include those wishes. Glad you got a lot of great advice and made a decision that feels right for you. Praying for guidance is something that resonates with me too :-) What a great story!!!

And thanks whoever recommended "Grit", that is definitely something I want to investigate

Congratulations! Absolutely sounds like the right plan. A career in retail would mean weekends, holidays, plus eventual foot or leg issues from standing all day. And I agree with the other people who mentioned the physical aspect of lifting boxes etc. Maybe you could put more focus on your blog as a side fashion business?

The other thought I had is, when leaving Motto, if you want to leave on a good note, you could see if there are other ways you could work with the company that did not involve retail sales (maybe blog comes in here).

Deborah - you could hardly have a better outcome - boss already where you wanted to be and the team all excited. It'll be interesting to see how you head with the job share thoughts because it seems to me that you'll be doing days work in less than 5 full days. Glad that you have realized it was an answer to prayer

I have full confidence that if you do go down the job share path that you'd make it work for the person after your own experience.

BTW, has someone taken over your community meal program?

[and I'm sorry to bring up myself on your thread earlier, but in answer to your question, DH does all the school drop offs (DD12 takes the bus) and 2 pick ups. I do one, my MIL does one and my SIL does one. Takes an extended family to raise our family for sure. DH cooks 3-4 nights a week, including the nights we have people over. His work does have more flexibility, but he is putting in FT hours.]

Thanks Astrid :)

Ok, so I met with my boss first thing yesterday morning. There was no question in his mind that I was the person to take on the role, and had already thought through the school hours option which he thought was a great solution for both me and the organisation. He also has no problem with me working from home as required but needs to have HR ok this.
So this means 8.30 a.m. to 3.00 p.m Monday to Friday and I start my new hours on Monday, June 27. My interest in my job which had been waning, is now new invigorated and I am excited about going to work each morning. We have agreed that we take some time to assess if an additional person involved in this job is required and have some ideas about how to manage this if I feel I need support. We have agreed that historically the job share situation has not been the most successful way to do it. The other thing that was lovely was that when the anouncement was made to the staff at a meeting yesterday afternoon, my colleagues were genuinely pleased and excited for me so I know I have their full support as I take this on in a more full time capacity.

I haven't yet given notice at my other job. As a casual I am not legally required to give notice but I do think it's the right thing to do, so I will be notifying them probably mid next week which will mean I have 4 shifts left before I finish up.

I couldn't be happier! This is exactly where I hoped my job would go so I am feeling really blessed and grateful.

Thanks again for all your support and wisdom.

Evie I am totally blessed by your response. Without boring you with the full back story of this job, I have been praying in recent months that God would change the circumstances of this job to where it would be a more satisfying and fulfilling job where my skills were fully utilized. This is clearly an answer to prayer, it just took me a few days to process it, I think, because it was unexpected:) Thank you for sharing so openly. God has been so amazingly generous in my life and I am so grateful.

Whenever I face a decision such as your's, I love to read the following verses in the Bible and chat/pray through the options with God. He sees the whole picture (what may come into your life in the days ahead, your family's needs, your gifting and passions, etc.) and can be trusted to lead you into the plans and purposes He has already prepared for you. All I can say is, follow your heart. If it ends up being a misstep, God loves you so deeply that He will not leave you there, but will redirect your steps.

Psalm 143:8,10
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life...
Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

I am super excited for you!!! Hopefully I have not been out of line here, sharing part of my own faith journey with you.

Cannot thank you all enough for your input. You really have affirmed my thoughts. Having thought on it for a few days I am now planning to meet with my manager this week and propose that I work Monday to Friday,8.30 - 3.00 p.m. I will also be requesting that I be able to work from home when I need to ie. should Master 13 be home sick from school and during school holidays as needed. (We are all set up to work remotely and we are a flexible work place).

I am feeling very free now to give up the retail work. It's not retail that is my passion. It's the fashion side of things that make me love it but the truth is there is no future in it, it doesn't pay well and I have no desire to work nights and weekends. It all became very clear, very quickly.

Beth Ann, that was also something I had to think about. DH's hours are extremely flexible so yes I think this will work. We have both been in church ministry until we moved to Bendigo 5 years ago and went back into the secular work force so we are pretty good at making it work.

Sending hugs to you all. Such wisdom in one place, I am indeed blessed.

Will let you know how my meeting with my manager goes.:)

I have to agree about the previous comments regarding full-time retail work. I managed stores immediately after graduating from university, and it could be grueling. Around the holidays, a manager is constantly at the store, often from open to close, including Christmas eve. And unless something has drastically changed, the pay is never worth the work put in.

IMO, it sounds like you would be more mentally stimulated at the non-profit, your hours would be better, and the pay would be better. From where I sit, that sounds like winning all the way around.

Full time retail, especially as a manager is hard work. Physically demanding....on your feet, dragging boxes of freight and fixtures here and there. Your hours and schedule usually conflict with the rest of the world...few weekends off, extra hours during the Christmas holidays. Your staff will probably be not super committed, because you can't pay much. Turnover is high, and when someone calls out, you may have to stay to cover a shift. This is especially true in a specialty store environment, not so much in a department store. I've enjoyed it but it's not for everyone.

Thanks for mentioning 'Grit'. It sounds so compelling that I'm off to buy the audio and listen.

Deborah, having worked at a nonprofit and really enjoying the optimism of 'changing the world and making it a better place', I echo Unfrumped that retail wouldn't keep you happy if you dove further into it. Working a couple clothing shows a year, I find some cute one-offs, which barely offsets my sore fingers from buttoning everything and being tired from toting armfuls of garments from place to place. It's a good balance to my fantasy of running a shop :)

Super advice.

I recently went through some agonizing as different options seemed hard to decide amongst--for every pro I could find a con, and so on, back and forth as Suz said.

I would listen to your "limited by " issues in retail and really avoid staying there because of discount. That has certainly been a style inhibitor for me and I realize I am much are better off thinking of my own $$ to follow whatever brand and not what is on sale.
Also if it is truly realistic that the NFP is open or would be open to splitting up the job down the road, then thinking about longer-term rather than short term hours can be good. At some point one also has to believe that things will work out no matter what and that decisions are just that, and sometimes not as big as we make them (note to self, haha!).

Have you seen the book "Grit" or listened to the Podcast? It ties in with the concept of long-abiding interests and honing those skills. If the NFP really plays to your work and career skills and enjoyment, and possibly the retail more to your hobby, then you may find yourself able to "lean in" on the NFP for a year or so and then downsize a bit.

How amazing to be in a position to make a choice! That is a blessing (and I mean that literally), that gives you a chance to shape your days, and choose according to your deepest values. Of course, it also requires you to uncover and identify those values -- and do so pretty quickly! A little "retreat" time might be in order!

One more thing for consideration: When my DH was in the pastorate, it was sometimes difficult that he worked so much on the weekend, while my work was focused M-F. Would you get ample time off for family days at vacation to recharge as a couple and as a family?

I'm looking at some of these decisions myself in the near future. Praying for wisdom and grace!

Deborah, these are tough decisions! But what a great position to be in, where your skills are in demand.
Others have given you points to ponder. I just want to send positive thoughts while you consider all your options.

All I can say is I wish you the best of luck whichever way you choose. My experience is if you are not happy with the way it works out there will always be other opportunities in the future.

It's a balancing act, Deborah, as always.

Do you want more time?
Do you want more money?
Do you want to be able to put your family before everything else?
Do you want more intellectual satisfaction?
Do you want more professional satisfaction?
Do you want to pursue your interest in fashion as an actual career in retail?
Are you good enough at what you do in one of these fields to negotiate terms that make sense for your day to day life?

My feeling on this one is that retail is always there, and those jobs are easier to find if that's what you want. A management role in a NFP? I wouldn't think they are quite so easy to find at the time that suits you. I'd put the Motto job in perspective: it's fun to get a discount and buy new stuff frequently, but I agree with the others in that a full-item retail job is hard, hard, work - and you don't even get the satisfaction of ownership.
