I have better luck with V neck cardigans than those with a crew neck when wearing it open, but a bit of a sway back also makes any cardi hard to fit. I'm liking knit jackets for having some structure but also coziness...best of both

I would never expect cardigans to lie flat over my front unless they were held there by a) a button, b) belted or c) I'm sitting still and I had pulled it around me.

Cardigans just don't have the structure at the shoulders or the fabric weight to stay in place.

It doesn't bother me at all that cardigans fall to the side.

QM, have you tried buttoning up just one or two buttons at the bottom? That's what I do when I want to pull the edges in tighter. It works better with some than with others. Otherwise, I just let them lie to the sides..

texstyle... I couldn't agree more. I much prefer the structure that jackets and blazers add, but I remember last winter longing for the cozy feel of a cardigan on dreary days, so I figured I'd work on getting my "cold winter day" capsule up to snuff.

I agree - and I also don't like the way the unstructured cardigans make my shoulders look. Sort of "droopy." I much prefer a blazer style or jacket style topper - even if it's very lightweight, I like the look of some added structure to the item. Also, I find that most tops don't fit smoothly under my cardigans - bunching in the underarm area, etc. I feel like I need to wear them with sleeveless tops underneath. I haven't worn the ones I own much at all due to these issues. I'm going to try again this fall with some of my newer sleeveless tops under them.

I guess you're right Mo, and maybe I'm just being too picky, but I don't find it flattering (on myself) to have my cardigan all laying down the side with my boobs sticking front and center. I also don't like to button my cardigans as I lose my long lean line. And the biggest problem is when I try to wear a scarf with it. For some reason it looks funny to me when the cardigan is so open and then I have a scarf going down my front. Sigh...
I did try the BR classic long cardi yesterday and it didn't seem to be quite as bad, but I didn't want to pay the price ($69). I just ordered it in two colors though at 30% off... so I can road test it when it comes.
I'm wanting to put together some jeans + simple tee + long cardigan + scarf looks for a casual fall MOTG look.
Thanks for the input gals. I'll report back when my BR order comes.

Perhaps we got used to the open cascading waterfall cardis and now the traditional cut v-neck ones, by comparison, are not laying the same? I will button one or two buttons near the navel if I want one to stay more closed.

I'm with Scarlet and crazyone - in general, I don't think cardigans have enough 'body' to lay perfectly on you. The buttons are really the only thing to give the garment structure. A jacket can have a lining, interfacing, etc. to give you that neat appearance.

I usually button my cardigans with one button to get a nice face/neck framing "v-effect" if I want a neater look. When I have it open, I don't really pay attention to how it lays...

I am very small-busted and I have the same problem... I don't mind it so much, though. I wear unbuttoned v-neck cardigans open specifically so that they look like a drapey waterfall cardigan, but with the versatility of buttoning up when I get cold.

well it seems that spreading cardigans do not discriminate according to bust size :-)
I am a woman on a mission now... to find a cardigan that behaves and hangs where I want it to! I'm going to start by trying all mine on and comparing. I really would like to replace 1 or 2 for the season.

My more fitted cardigans do this - I think on me it's because my boobs are very wide set so they push everything to the side. And this includes cardigans which I knit myself to my exact measurements. I kind of like the shrunken effect though. If I want it to stay over my boobs, I usually just button one or two buttons.

Huh, I have not had this problem very much, but most of my cardis have a bit of heft to them. Truth be told, tho, I haven't been wearing cardis that much lately.

Funny, I have the same problem, and thought it was because I am rather generously endowed! It might be that a looser cardigan would drape over the chest and stay there but more fitted ones hang closer to the arms...

I do! I think ones that are a bit heavier seem to behave better for me (vs. thin knit cotton or cotton blends), and ones that don't have ribbed bottom bands (the band seems to encourage the pulling off to the sides, if you know what I mean).

I don't wear cardigans often but do like to have a few in my arsenal. I was looking at cardigans today and I have so much trouble getting them to lay right. They always want to fall open and lay down the side of my chest, rather than nicely lay down the front of me. Am I explaining myself clearly? Is it the style (I've been trying for v-necks) or do I need to size up? Does anyone else experience this? Anyone have a solution to this problem?

I am suspecting now that I think about it that it could be a combination of the long cardigan and v-neck... perhaps the weight of the cardigan is pulling the whole thing open too much?
