I don't know exactly how it works, but my husband's car, which is a Subaru automatic that can be switched into manual mode, also has it. I'm guessing it's pretty common these days.

15 years old with 200,000 miles? Honestly, they aren't designed to provide any more than that. Even if you get this problem fixed, you have to assume another one will pop up almost immediately, right?

I get real attached to my cars, too, and always hate the idea of shopping for and switching to a different one. But every time I do, I am amazed at how much more I like the new one.

Unlike almost every other type of object being produced in the world, for the most part cars are getting better and better. There have been so many excellent safety features added to cars in the last few years - as well as some fun conveniences. That hill-assist feature sounds fabulous! The front collision avoidance system on my 3-year-old vehicle has twice worked in circumstances when the car in front of me stopped suddenly and unexpectedly on the freeway - in one of those cases I probably could not have avoided an accident that likely would have been pretty bad. Also, the blind-spot protection, etc. really makes it much easier to navigate in heavy traffic. With all of the distracted drivers on the road these days, you owe it to yourself and everyone who cares about you to get yourself into a vehicle that is safe and dependable - PLEASE!!

Here's a link to the current crop of station wagons - most of the models have been around for a while, meaning new-ish ones (as opposed to new) ought to be available. https://cars.usnews.com/cars-t.....ngs/wagons

Going to climb down from my soapbox now.....

Yes, when I test drove that Porsche Macan, it had the hill assist thing, and it was very cool! I understand it is available on other cars too (not just $$$ ones).

I hear you about just wanting YOUR car. You know I've been shopping for one, and we actually put a deposit on a Macan only to find out the car got sold to another customer in the meanwhile (it was at another dealership in another state). We've had a tough time getting the exact model I want, so I'm starting to rethink the whole Macan thing. Maybe I shouldn't get a car that's so high-end. I'm used to being inconspicuous, and part of me wants something not so common, but then I remember that I like to drive around looking for photo spots and that often takes me into weird industrial or rural areas where I would prefer not to stand out so much. And then there is the fuel economy thing, and how expensive it is to service and insure a sports car. I'm conflicted.

Sorry to derail! I say go check out the Mazda. They're really good cars!

Aww, Rachylou, what a trial! Just a note here about manual transmission: if you get a new car and you still want manual trans, it may have something like mine does, called "hill assist" or something similar. It gives you a split second to engage the gear, when you're on a hill. I drive much more confidently on Seattle hills now. (My car is a VW Golf, 2016 model.)

Rachy, I don't think I ever posted that picture. I asked YLF about the two thrifted peacoats. The consensus was get rid of them as soon as possible. I found a very nice navy peacoat on sale at Macy's. It does fit a lot better. And the fabric is nice, too.

https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....-they-work

What pained me was giving up the car I loved so much. The little Subaru was perfect IMO. Compact, AWD, heated seats. What else did I need? Apparently, I needed a backup camera and bluetooth!

What, you don't look good in that peacoat? Did you show us this pic? Lol.

I do love my car. I did buy it new, special order - green and manual transmission. But boy, that drop in value pained me. Watching the odometer climb in Bay Area commute traffic pained me. Lol. Numbers cause me pain.

I will probably give up manual transmission too, because of the traffic. Bleah :p

We bought a new car this year, a Subaru Outback. Here's the car we drove to Minnesota, a 12 YO Subaru Forester (in the Badlands). We keep our cars a long time. The good thing about a new car is that you're not inheriting someone else's problem.

BTW, I thought I looked great in this peacoat. YLF set me straight!

I have a good but WEIRD mechanic. In fact they are ALL weird around here. They fix things but they don't service them.

My car is 15 years old and hard driven. Over 200k. It's worth nothing now.

I've decided never to buy a new car again, tho. I'll add that. Half a car's value is lost in the first year.

Rachylou, I do not understand - can it be repaired or not? Said by someone who stubbornly stuck to the same car for 19 years - but you know, I have an excellent mechanic! Am I wrong, or I remember you said in a previous post that you have a good mechanic?

Are you in SF? My brother bought a manual VW squareback in SF years ago and we literally rolled into the car behind us at a very steep intersection. After that they left lots of space. I'm glad you're having a good experience with AAA. My dad worked there for years and years. Don't let your friend pressure you into doing something you don't want to do. Period. Good luck!

rachylou, Bless your heart. I am sorry. Dealing with car problems is so difficult . My car is in the shop now. The air conditioning is not working. Now hear this. It is a convertible and the top will not go up or down! Do not know how we (my generation of people) survived before air-conditioning in cars. I know, I know, why am I even driving a convertible? Part of the story, I love my car, and I did get it when I was somewhat younger.

I do hope your friend will help you through this car problem, and I believe your mother will support you too. I am rooting for you.

Right. So gears are gone on my car (clutch?) Was on a very steep hill! And this lady tells me No Parking! When clearly I'm in trouble. Argh.

Triple A guy is my new best friend (twice in 30 days). What is wrong with the local mechanics? They totally did not look at my car. No one can be bothered. The dealer is worse.

And to top it off, my lawyer (and friend) keeps pushing to take me shopping for a Mazda Protege. How would I explain that to Mother? Someone tell me!

Argh. Lol.
