Hi puffenstuff !!

There is a great website called travelsmith.com

In the right hand corner is their "travel center" . They have packing lists, they will help you create one according to weather, where you are going and they have travel specialists who will answer all kinds of questions regarding packing.

Londonkiwi we are going to Ireland first (after 32 odd hours on a plane and in airports!) for 6 days. Scotland for 3 days, onto Spain for 1 day to catch a 7 days cruise going through Italy then back to Spain, onto Venice for 2 days then flying back to Oz via Zurich & Hong Kong. Phew! Got a variety of activities planned mostly sight seeing and will probably have a chance to do any laundering in either Ireland or while on the cruise (which will prob be expensive!).

Thanks for the tops Pregnantmom - I'm an Aussie but know what you mean about the concept of dressing up or down. I confine tracksuit pants to housework!

Bella & Kate thanks for those links will definately check it out!

Looks like I need to get some more scarves and pashminas to throw on in case of the weather being cooler. We're at the end of summer here so just starting to get these kind of things in the shop so I figure if I get in early enough I should be ok!

My suggestion is to check out this blog:
http://thesmallfabricofmylife......drobe.html

Jane started a wardrobe challenge. Many many women participated and create 5 days' worth of outfits from 10 items(including shoes) and 5 accessories. If you check out their pictures, you may be inspired.

I always start with 2 bottoms, 2 tops and one layering piece (like a cardi) in colours that go well together for every trip I make. I actually don't stick to neutral colours because it's so boring and I usually get frustrated with it after a couple of days.

I also pack a smart coat or jacket with a matching pashmina and two pairs of comfortable yet smart shoes. That is really my minimum, even if I only travel for a weekend. I built the rest of my travelling wardrobe from there, adding tops, bottoms and layering pieces that are easy to mix and match. I only wear natural fibres so I usually can wear pieces at least twice before washing. I'll handwash some items during my vacation or put them in the washing machine if we stay in a self catering appartment. Or I'd let the hotel clean them, which will probably be cheaper than paying for extra weight on the flight.

In Europe people tend to dress a bit smarter than in the US but we don't "dress up" that much. I think that the concept of dressing up or down is very American. You won't see many yoga pants or athletic shoes on the street, but you won't see many women in LBDs in restaurants, either. It's no problem to wear your (smarter) day clothes to go dining, except perhaps if you want to visit a Michelin-rated restaurant. So that should make packing light easier.

I hope that helps.

Where about in Europe are you travelling? September can still be pretty warm in parts (like Italy, Spain and Southern France) but tending towards milder weather in places like the UK. Remember that there is less air conditioning than in the US. Are you staying in cities to site see or do you have other activities planned?

How long are you travelling for and will there be opportunities to launder clothing?

Scarves are my travel must have I normally take a couple and have a wide pashmina that serves as a blanket on the flight and a cover up for evenings outside.

Remember that you will have your carry on allowance too. Many airlines do not have a weight limit, but do have a size limit.

If you really want to travel light, make most of your main pieces black (or some other dark neutral) and add color with some scarves. Think light weight hand washable pieces that dry quickly and can be layered for warmth if needed. I usually take silk long underwear in black that can double for pjs. Leggings might serve this purpose. Wear your bulkiest pieces. You can get by with two or three bottoms (I usually take two pairs of pants and a skirt or two skirts and one pair of pants but often hardly wear one piece) and tops with different sleeve lengths that can be layered. I like a jacket that can button up to serve as a blouse, a sleeveless piece for hot days that can be worn over a long sleeved tee as a vest, and a dressier top that can be paired with the skirt to make a LBD. Of course you'll want a waterproof but breathable trench coat. Take two pair of very comfortable shoes that are not athletic tennis shoes. If it may get cold, a cashmere cardi is light weight and warm. You want to leave room for purchases.

Some of them airlines we'll be flying with will have a 15kg luggage limit so need to be as streamlined as possible.
