Love the new booties- probably cause I have similar ones that are workhorses!

How about having more texture, like your lace top, as the way to add interest?

Thank you Angie and Windchime! xx Angie you are so right, and lightbulb moment, I get all capsule-y and minimalist in a certain mood, and then plan a wardrobe based on it, so it only fits that mood ... whereas when I am more organic about it, all my style moods get represented! I think a bit of tracking is showing me this too!

Murph, the jeans in concept were a good buy ... but this particular pair is skinny, which I am a bit sick of, and also the waist is a little low ... so they are not the most comfortable. They were a thrift purchase, so lower-cost and waste, which makes me a feel a little better, and good quality/brand, but I think I felt a bit rushed and had guilt about them having the sanitize the change room etc hahah ... so a decision made in haste I'd say! In the spirit of 'make it do' though, I will make them do until the spring, at which time I'm hoping I can go to a proper store and try on jeans without feeling so rushed.

I’m not surprised that your 28 carefully selected capsule items, with one or two switches, are going the distance for you for winter, especially during stay-at-home. I tried a 30 item capsule a couple different times and found it was plenty. I didn’t even wear all of it.

I love your burgundy boots! Great way to keep things interesting and fun.

I love the burgundy capsule you're building! It's a perfect colour for you and something about it feels warm and cozy. The boots sound like a smart duplication.

I know where you're coming from, reaching for t-shirts this time of year. During the deep winter months, I reach almost exclusively for slim-fitting tops that aren't fussy to layer under knitwear and parkas. My collared shirts take a break until late winter/early spring when the layering situation becomes a bit more flexible.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and encouragement!

Robin, yes, agreed ... I copped onto it for summer (and I find plain tops work better with white shorts, as the contrast adds 'pop' without any additions ... but I'm not a white pants in winter girl) ... now to apply for winter!

Carla, yes, I think they will be versatile, especially with my black and neutral outerwear ... and yes it's funny how layers *don't* work in the cold weather ... with heat, and then wearing a coat and now mask in stores, etc., actually a warm underlayer can be too much ... whereas a t-shirt I can easily throw a hoodie on if I'm sitting at home or going for a walk, and remove it to put my winter coat on so I don't overheat in the car and doing errands! Love the texture idea ...

Star, that's a cute and very modern outfit change-up; I've seen this on Instagram and it looks great!

Jenni, thank you and yes - this way of doing it is not very everyone, especially those like you with a creative flair ... whereas for me, I wear more different pieces with less choice ... with more choice I default even more strictly to the most basics piece. Horses for courses as Angie says!

cat2 - YES! This is how I need to approach it. "Tops that are visually distinguishable" is going to be a key guideline for me this year - thank you!

slimcat, definitely some optimism that I may one day go out again :D

Rachy, yes ... it could be that I am just sick to death of the gray skies. I usually gravitate to the neutrals at some point in the winter, so it may be coming ... my plan is to roll with it, but then track to see if there's anything interesting to be learned ...

Shevia and notsaf, thanks!

FI, yes - it's always an interesting exercise to challenge one's assumption about oneself! Amazing how wrong we can be about ourselves sometimes!

Sounds like this has been a very useful exercise. I agree about tops with interest, I am always on the lookout for that kind of piece. They are especially useful in the summer when I don't want to add a cardigan for a complete look but I could use some like that for winter too.

Without a ‘third layer’ outfits composed of a ‘plain’ top and bottom can seem boring. This was driven home for me in summer, when it was too hot to wear more than shorts and a t-shirt, but pops up in winter when household temps and activities make a third piece superfluous. The easy solutions for me are patterned pieces or interesting colour. A style goal has been to add more texture. Something that can be seen as well as felt. I haven’t made much progress there, but I persevere!

The cranberry colour-way suits you very well, and picking up another pair of boots was an excellent idea. I’ve been wearing my new red combat boots 2 to 1 with the black ones this winter. The coloured ones are surprisingly versatile.

As someone who wears Polonecks and cords/jeans from Dec to the end of March, I totally get the idea of tops to be a bit more detailed for interest. Just this morning due to a bit warmer weather and already feeling sick of my 'uniform' I layered a short-sleeve button down over a slightly thinner polo just to add some interest (for me) and it is working.

Yes I had to reread the old post from a month or so ago about the capsule. I remember last January working out how many items I had worn in that month. I could easily do that again since I have started counting anew for the new year.
I don’t think I want to put a pre-determined capsule aside though? I prefer to have my whole wardrobe available... and the weather can do odd things occasionally, summer storms and the like which are colder.
Anyway it seems like you calculated the numbers you would need quite well...

When I am packing for a month long business trip I try to pack items that have variation in silhouette, color, pattern and trimming. It feels much fresher if I have long and short jackets, cropped and full length pants, and tops that are visually distinguishable. I imagine a capsule could benefit from a similar mix?

I feel like basic things ( or things in neutral colors ) don't quite appeal to me too - maybe it's holiday season, or maybe it's a bit of hope I'm feeling now.

So interesting to see what you actually wear vs what you expected when you put the capsule together! I can understand instinctively reaching for color at this time of year. On your T-shirts going to from home to the yoga mat—that’s how I wear tops with built-in shelf bras.

Hi all, as you know I'm working with a capsule wardrobe for the months of December through February, which I detailed out a bit further here. I was taking daily outfits photos but decided that wasn't really working for me (plus, stuff got busy with the holidays!) But inspired by some of the tracking posts others have done, I started tracking wears for interest and fun!

Here are a few observations I've made after the first month:

The 28ish items I chose have been more than plenty so far. This is of course in part because of lockdown, but also a reflection of my lifestyle, in which blingy earrings, brighter lipstick and smart shoes are all that is needed to make an outfit dressy enough for most occasions.

I did add one item from my holding zone - a deep burgundy v-neck - for a slightly different look - I couldn't face another crewneck that day for some reason haha. This got me thinking that with a small wardrobe, I might focus a little more on choosing pieces with some differences - e.g. a few different necklines, shapes, etc.

The above point was driven home by my Christmas Eve lacy blouse, which I felt great in even with almost no additional styling or adornment - a top with a bit of detail is something to consider more going forward too, and is a good way to keep simple outfits from being totally boring perhaps.

My favourite and workhorse pieces get a LOT of wear. Using 30 wears as a (somewhat arbitrary, I know) guideline, I would estimate I am easily tripling that with winter outerwear, and will probably get close to it with jeans over the course of a capsule. Some of my tops may get close too. So I think I can drop some of the guilt about buying new pieces (esp. outerwear) every couple of years, since those pieces are likely to have logged over 100 wears easily.

Favourite pieces so far have included my button fly jeans, black jeans (surprising since they were not a great purchase - but they are clearing filling a valuable role) and deep red/burgundy tops.

Interestingly, my neutral tops are getting less wear than the colourful ones.

I observed earlier in the year somewhere that t-shirts are a good piece for me, because they can take me from casual at home, to a bit more polished, to yoga mat without a full outfit change, and are ideal for the heating/coat/layering situations of winter. So I think a good thing I'll keep my eyes out for are t-shirts that meet the criteria noted above (i.e. a bit of interest, different shapes) ... i.e. not super-basic ones.

I did make one purchase in the Boxing Day sales - having extrapolated from my tracking that my Blondos have probably clocked up 100 wears at least by now, I purchased an additional pair in the deep red/burgundy that I am enjoying so much. I think they will make a nice complement of sorts with my blanket scarf.

Anyways, I think that's it for now ... thanks for reading and any feedback you might have, and thanks wear-trackers for the inspiration!

[old photo just to show the colour complement with the booties ... fingers crossed the tones work nicely! :) ]
