OMG Angie! You are so right, how I haven’t seen that!? Last 3 years I didn’t buy a lot of clothes while my needs and preferences have changed. Of course my wardrobe is out of balance!

anchie, BALANCE is almost always key in life, right?

Very interesting recent observations!

Simply put, this is my opinion, FWIW:

Your sartorial preferences changed, and your wardrobe and style need to pivot to support the change. You don't have enough of the items you do want to wear, and too many of the items you don't want to wear.

Next steps: Slowly build the wardrobe to suit this leg of your style journey. And enjoy the process as well as the outcome

Recently I was trying to wear less fav items at least one time per season - so it feels like there is reason I'm still keeping them - lol. I don't count how many times I've worn one or another item - too stressful and boring for me. Repeat wear of my best outfits is common for me ( I may switch jewelry, belt or shoes sometimes ). It's fine to chose what works for you and go with it - why not if it makes life easier ?

Welcome back, Anchie! I find your system fascinating. The seasonality and distinctness of your capsules is clever. I am not a numbers person, and I don't track wears, and I can't imagine myself doing something so disciplined with my wardrobe. Though, like others have said, I do use tracking for fitness--exercise, sleep, and nutrition. This discussion makes me wonder why I'm willing to track some things but not what I wear.

Anyway, I like your idea of not forcing wears and seeing what it reveals to you.

Forced wear puts me in the attitude "eat your peas" which I hated! Challenging means being creative with how to wear the item in a way that is at least acceptable if not enjoyable. BTW, I love peas now!!!

Anchie you say you were happy with every outfit you wore. Isn't this the point? We don't always have to be creative with outfits. If basic essentials are making you happy right now milk them, as ANGIE says.

Here is my observation after a week of not forcing wears. The biggest benefit was obvious - I was very happy with every outfit I wore. But I noticed also two side effects. First, It took me much longer to decide what to wear. I used to start with one of the less worn items to base my outfit around, but now without that structure I felt little lost and overwhelmed by options. Second, my outfits became safer, consisting only of favourite essentials. When I was forcing wears I had to get creative and find new ways to wear the trickier, non essential items and incorporate them into outfits. So jury is still out, I think I will need to find some balance between the two approaches.

Angie, thank you - it’s good to be back! I’ll keep tracking, but I will try to use this data in different way.

Bonnie - this is really interesting. I have similar number of tops - 42. But with your 9 wears for 40 tops - that is full year of wears so you really have to be disciplined to achieve that.

Runcarla - your method sounds very similar to mine. I do have everything out, items are added to seasonal capsules just for organization purpose, but there are many that I wear year round. And mid weight layers are actually my most worn items. I will try to share OOTD soon.

Lise - agree completely. I also use tracking for future purchases decision, I would be lost without it.

JenniNZ - 38 wears already, those pants sounds like a winner.

Sal - I did have 2 rounds of hot flushes previously that lasted about 2 months, but this third round that started in July seems more stubborn. I have similar revelations about heels and dresses. They belong more to my imaginary life :)

Jamie - yes, I hope I will get more more interesting and useful data this way.

Lisa - I like your goal, that is what I will aim now too. I don't really care about CPW either, I never check that and it is not the reason why I track. I feel the same guilt if I don't wear 10 euros t-shirt or 200 euros blazer :)

Sisi - it feels we are on the same page. Regarding climate change, we didn't have the hottest summer this year, it was raining quite a bit, and my high summer items didn't get that much wear regardless how much I tried.

LJP - completely agree with you. Tracking was causing the stress because I was not using it the right way, hopefully I can fix it.

unfrumped - exactly how I feel, I could have written the same. Especially problem for me when there is too many items, and I can't wear them all even if I wanted because there is just limited number of opportunities.

Suz - exactly, there is always a reason why something does not get worn and you identified the reasons brilliantly, I agree with all of them. I do have another reason - when item is not essential and requires more effort to incorporate into the outfits, I sometimes just don't bother, and this is maybe only case when forcing should be justified for me.

SW Ann - I do have a large holding zone and use it in very similar way. I do have items that I just can't force myself to wear no matter how much I try (or if they just don't fit me anymore), my biggest issue is with items that are somewhere in between - still nice and useful, just not favourites anymore.

Carol - my current job is database specialist, so mostly structuring and analysing data. I did have recent experience with item falling apart - it was my favourite Mango blazer. I am allergic to dry cleaning chemicals, so I wash all my blazers mostly successfully even when label says not to do it. But only good quality blazers survive this.

lyn67 - let us know what you figure out.

Val MN - your approach sounds very similar to mine even if you are using different tracking method. And this is exactly what I am trying to do - coming up with best outfit possible today.

Welcome back, Anchie!

I relate to your practice of aiming for a certain number of wears per season. I call it “rotating wears evenly” and implement it by trying to wear every item in the capsule at least once every two laundry cycles. I don’t formally track wears, just watch what’s coming through the laundry and hanging on my airing hooks. (I only have one 20-30 item capsule active at a time, and a laundry cycle is one week long.)

In answer to your question, I haven’t exactly switched away from rotating wears evenly, but I do let in a joy factor to balance it. I call it “making the best outfit that I can today”, which means choosing the items that feel best and work best, regardless of rotating wears. Then the next day, I can apply the best-outfit rule again and get a different result because there’s a different selection available (and also different weather, activities, and mood, of course). I actually have barely enough clothes, so sometimes I’m stuck wearing an undesired outfit, but at least I can feel satisfied that it was the best available that day.

I would love to try a capsule wardrobe--probably something along the lines of Project 333.

I have never tracked wears, because I wear all my things. I have a smaller wardrobe than others, and I don't spend much on each item. That makes it unnecessary to track, to make an expensive item "worth" it.

I will throw down the gauntlet and say this idea that we need to invest in quality all the time is a bit forced. Most items at the Macy's level are just fine, and we don't really need to be buying a $1,000 blazer but once in a blue moon. Most people turn over our wardrobes frequently, because clothes are widely available. And the idea that things are "falling apart in the dryer," so often promoted by influencers as a reason to spend more than you have....I mean, I rarely have clothes fall apart in the dryer. And they are from Macy's!

Solid quality can be had for $30--no one talks about that. Excellence comes at $1,000, or whatever, but manufacturing processes are so modernized that quality is very, very easy to come by.

I do like the idea of wardrobe tracking, but I would probably only do it for fun. Because it is so tied to the idea of breaking down an expensive item into cost-per-wear. We can just not have a lot of items, and also not spend much on them, and it is so much simpler.

So I guess I do dress for joy...I am curious to know what your job is. I adore statistics, particularly, and I also love finance. I can see how cost-per-wear would work if you really, really used that info. I do numbers with food, energy use, that kind of thing.

Hi! Anchie--it's great to see a post from you! I have not tracked my clothing wear at all. I have always been a "feelings" or joy wearer. And usually, if something doesn't feel right, it comes off me immediately. I usually leave a questionable item in my closet to see if it feels better when I try it a time or two, but more than a few times, it goes into the holding zone to be donated. I live in an extremely hot climate so sometimes I know if I try something when the seasons change it might work, so I only clean out the holding zone a few times per year, and if in doubt at that time, sometimes things go back in to the closet. But I am definitely a joy wearer, not a tracker. I have found this works best for me, but I know it isn't for everyone. I do have a pretty large wardrobe, and it keeps me from being bored.

Great to hear from you, Anchie! Glad you finally have a moment to catch your breath and evaluate the closet!

I've tracked intermittently when I felt the need. I realize that I tend to feel the need most when it is time for a major refresh. As for Sal, tracking helps me see what I'm wearing the most, so what deserves my $$. It sometimes also helps me see what element I might sense is missing in the closet, be that colour, pattern, texture or something else.

Mostly, though, I'm an intuitive shopper and dresser, so I applaud your decision to forget about forced wears. I never force a wear -- it just doesn't make sense to me. If I am not wearing it -- there is a good reason. Either it doesn't fit/ feel right or it's starting to look or feel a bit worn out (in which case, I need to edit it out), or it is a special occasion item (in which case, I need to give it grace and let it stand), or it's a near dupe of something I love more (deliberate on whether I need two), or my lifestyle/ needs have changed (in which case, it's time for an overall closet shift), or I don't have companion pieces (try to fix that), or I just don't like it any more (let it go!).

I hear you on the “ forced” wears. I don’t track numbers but do have items that seem “ neglected” so I’ll wear them because they are reproaching me! That’s ok to do a couple of times to see if I re-discover that u really love it and just forgot about it( also an indicator of too many items, so a need to review & cull the least favorites.
Sometimes this happens when I’ve over-duplicated an item in different colors and over time find that a color I thought would be great is not really fitting in as I expected.

Hi Anchie. My experience has been that tracking anything (food, workouts, clothing purchases and wears etc) can cause unnecessary anxiety if your goal isn't clear or doesn't align with your emotions at the time . I find when I get too worked up over tracking, I stop and let intuition take over for awhile. I think dressing doesn't have to be a chore or a job, per se, and should be fun and confidence boosting. Just sharing my own thoughts here - hope you find something that works for you.

Nice to see you Anchie! Your post is very interesting and resonates with me. Like you, I have recently adjusted and tweaked my wardrobe - in my case due to the climate warming. Like you, for a certain period I tried to force myself to wear certain items to boost or even out the number of wears. It did not work. I wear what I feel to wear and continue to track. It is the most helpful tool for me, I find it fun and I'm addicted.

I adore tracking and analyzing as well and appreciate your insights. I have been tracking my CPW for probably 10 years or more. While it can be helpful as you've stated, it can indeed lead to forcing one to wear things just to impact a number.

I've accepted that while I track CPW, I don't aim for an equal amount of CPW per item or a low CPW per item before I edit something out. I use CPW to see how I'm using my wardrobe and to pin point trends with my current style. Sometimes I'll use CPW to remind me to wear an item, but that's rare. I'm a mood based dresser and things fall in and out of favor often.

My goal every day is to dress in an outfit that makes me happy.

Nice to hear from you Anchie! I am not a wardrobe tracker but can easily understand the appeal. I do track other things (like workouts and sleep) and sometimes food. Anyway, I agree that the tracking should serve you and not you it, so applaud your decision to dress more intuitively. It will also make the data more interesting I think!

Lovely to hear from you!

I think leaning into the joy of clothes is important - the news cycle is very gloomy at the moment so it is important to gain some pleasure where we can. I too am at the hot flush stage (gone away temporarily but I had two months of intense ones)....it can change what you wear.

I track - I started in 2022 and have over three years of data. If I don't login to my spreadsheet I just add it in again a day or two later. I track monthly eg cream jeans 4 x, blue trousers x2 etc and tally up. I am more relaxed about my active wear and using a one in one out approach strictly unless my needs completely change. My active wear gets a lot of wear and cost per wear is low in the end.

My main revelations from tracking have been;
1) I should not begrudge spending on trousers/jeans or footwear or sportswear - as long as it is worn in a practical sense I get excellent wear.
2) I should be more cautious with tees and woven tops - they wear out quicker and I have more, so expensive blouses are a luxury item.
3) I love dresses but I need to hold back on them as I do wear a lot of pants to work - and especially in the winter.
4) I don't choose heels often at all so do not buy them. I am keeping my current heels collection but not adding any more. Even wedge sandals don't get as much wear as they used to......

Good luck Anchie.

Anchie my recent autumn/winter tracking showed that I keep wearing the same kind of clothing the most as in previous years. I am very much a pants wearer, mostly slim or straight which is my preference, I have one slightly wider pair of grey knit pants from 2023 now 36 wears and one pair of actual wide legs in navy from 2024 now 18 wears. Both of these are worn with co-ordinating tops that have either grey or navy in. But my new slim straight false plain black pants that I bought late summer, immediately realising they were most like my favourite pants, have already had 38 wears in 6 months. They did displace wears from my 2014 black dress pants which only had 2 wears this year. But those are from over a decade ago and have had over 140 wears altogether! So it’s OK. I think I was following my heart, I knew at once I would love the new pants a lot and want to wear them and I did, and felt happy 38 times! No forcing required.

Hi Anchie! 60 items for Fall/Winter and 60 for Spring/Summer are my goal numbers. I have been tracking since 2021, although I stop for winter (very monotonous and nothing to gain from it). I never use my numbers to force myself to wear an item. What it can do is remind me I have not worn something I want to that I have forgotten about. Mostly I use it for future purchases info. Maybe it did help you in a sense that you now realise you don't need that number of dresses and which colours you were leaning into more often. On that point you should never wear a colour that feels wrong. It sounds like you know where your wardrobe should be going, and you know how to get there, so Well Done!

Nice to ‘see’ you Anchie! I’ve always enjoyed your fashion sense and hope you share some OOTD* at some time. Like you I “really enjoy numbers, rules, planning, and analyzing”.

I’ve been tracking wears for about 5 years +/-, but unlike you I have all my clothes ‘out’ and I pick and choose and wear what I like. I periodically crunch the numbers when I’ve got a question - and still learn something new after all this time. This year I realized I wear 1/3 of my tops half the year (warm weather) 1/3 of my tops the other half (cold weather) and 1/3 of the tops year round. I’ve also learned what style/composition of top I reach for the most - highest wears are for mid-weight button downs (like a flannel or chambray shirt) and lightweight crew neck sweaters (cotton knit or virgin wool). This type of information informs what I shop for/add to my closet.

I keep a smaller closet, with high wear-per-year for items - often hitting double digits. Things can cycle out after 3-5 years. A faster cycle lets me adopt trends and wear them lots before they are old, however most of my stuff runs classic just the same.

Like you I will sometimes use wear counts to identify items I’m not wearing as much. Some items are just going to be like that, though. I don’t find lots of opportunities to wear a trench coat, but when the time and weather is right, I’m glad I have it in my closet.

*Outfit of the Day

Loved your detailed description of your tracking process. I've been tracking for ten years now and my process is similar except that I focus most of my tracking on tops. They are my weakness and I had way too many but have been slowly, with set backs, getting more in line with what I want and need. I've decided that my perfect wardrobe should include 40 tops and wear them nine times a year. Each top (sweater, dress, blouse, shirt, etc.) is styled until I find the best options then I photograph the options to remind me of what works. When I can't style a top, I donate it. I don't seem to overbuy toppers, outerwear, pants, shoes, or accessories and only add more of an item when I need something to complete an outfit. This has worked well for me and you should feel free to try what works for you.

Anchie, good to see you back on my forum!

In short: GOOD that you're following your feelings :)

Style evolution is inevitable for a myriad of reasons. Adapting and pivoting so that our styles work well on each leg of our style journey is a wise move.

As an emotional mood dresser myself, I wholeheartedly support "no forced wears". Personally, that would not make me happy. I get it! That means we need a wardrobe full of items we WANT to wear. Since you've adjusted your palettes significantly, your dress code has changed somewhat, and comfort is key - your wardrobe will take time getting to that sweet spot. You are dead right to edit slowly and feel your way through it.

As for tracking wears, please carry on when that creates enjoyment, satisfaction, and peace in your heart!!!

Dee - Mood-based dressing makes so much sense, especially when you know your style and what works for your life. I think I have been probably too rigid with my rules which prevented me from being intuitive and dressing according to my true feelings.
