Thanks everyone! I made some changes from what’s above (based on comfort and weight of items) but kept the proportions of types of items. I also added color since FashIntern pointed out that I had lacked some variety. Most of my tried and true pieces are navy or black, which is why I gravitated to many of them at first.

Thanks for the input FashIntern. I actually meant to remove the more casual cardigan. I’m editing the post as I go. The tops are similar colors because those are my dominant wardrobe colors! Especially in cooler weather. My summer wardrobe has more color variety. I definitely plan to have three bottoms and a dress. I can probably pop a pullover over the dress to make a “skirt.” Definitely want to hit up the Bosch exhibit.

For me, there would be too much similarity in the shirts for comfort. The pants you're taking are all versatile, neutral colors (stretching that term a bit to include olive pants). You could easily pop in a pop of color and it would still work with the toppers & bottoms. The tops don't need to match each other, because you won't be wearing them together.

We just got back from 2 weeks of traveling around. I wanted more than two pairs of pants, and I had 2 dresses. If you count what you wear on the plane, 3 should be fine. But about those black cardis: are they different enough from each other to warrant taking both?

I like the variety of shoes you're taking.

Have fun! If you get to the Hieronymus Bosch exhibit in Madrid, I want to hear about it ;)

I may need to pick a lighter weight dress (the one I had originally, a boho midi) or something like a pencil skirt instead. I'd rather have a dress, though, for various reasons. Maybe the purple Topshop dress (above)

Angie, the black jeans come off as trousers in person, I have one nice blouse (the red and black Madewell one), and one dress. I could sub in a dressier dress instead of the midi, take a more fitted black cardigan, and add another blouse in for variety, but that's about it. We have to watch our pennies more than we planned, and will mostly eat out at tapas places and won't really be seeking out any fancier meals or occasions. Nice jeans and a nice top will have to be good enough most nights on the tapas circuit. I could bring the olive jeans instead of the light wash, which look more like skinny pants than denim in person.

My dressiest coats are wool but I can't justify bringing any of those when it will only be cold enough for them at night, and they're so heavy and all our travel is during the day. (They couldn't possibly be packed in the suitcase I'm taking, and there is no way physically I can take a heavier one right now.) This packable puffer in black is still in play. Maybe it will look slightly nicer at night than the purple coat? (I'd still bring the shell of the purple coat for daytime.) I don't want to add a Find until I know it fits me, but that's the one I ordered. I've added finds for other items I can sub instead (not add). I also have an emerald green pashmina (no find) that looks nice.

Gretchen - thanks! We may have time to go to Toledo, but since I want to see all 3 of the major museums, and we only have four days on the ground there, I'm not sure we'll feel free to go. I plan to go back and also go north to Barcelona, someday.

UmmLila - good luck! it doesn't look like so much, for a non-carry on trip.

Making some progress ... I am not a gear traveler and I use a regular checked bag. My current thinking on outerwear involves a bunch of layers, and a faux leopard coat and a green field jacket. But I still have to winnow down. (See current pic.) Probably a lot.

Sarah, if I’d gotten those jean sooner, I might have. Kind of attached to the tops I’ve chosen now. I’ve been planning for a while... how cool about Escher! My husband will love that factoid.

UmmLila, how funny! I plan way in advance because packing is a fun logic puzzle for me. I love to maximize options within the space of a carry on. This is why, of course, the idea of bringin anything but the tri climate coat was a fantasy. It’s the ultimate maximization of options. It’s now randomly going to be 70 degrees the day I leave. I’ll have to carry the stupid thing to the airport and then all around inside it. I don’t look forward to that. Let me know what outerwear you end up packing!

Christina the other option is to take the embroidered jeans (a bit Desigual, no?) and build your tops wardrobe around them.

Joy, thanks for the tips! We gave Madrid an extra night because we are definitely very keen to see all three of the major art museums there. I’m a little nervous about walking around the other two cities, with the hills, but i’ll take buses and taxis where I can. The fact that I found these boots is a miracle. No car for us - we are taking trains between all three and flying open jaw (into Madrid, and out of Granada).

Kaelyn - thank you! Travel has a way of getting you to select your favorite pieces, I think.

Suz, I’m so excited for Granada. The Alhambra is a bucket list item, but I have to check out Lorca’s house too. I’ve got some scarves, mostly not in Finds.

Rachylou, I’m always torn between packing light and wanting options. I have to find the happy medium. For my needs, I think three bottoms will do. Yeah, jeans are heavy, but I’m most comfortable in them, especially in a city trip. I may wear one, pack one, and pick some lightweight pants for the third. The blue skinnies and the black boot cuts are the winners, if I bring two!

delurked, I’ve also got these green pants. They’re good for travel but I need to try both those and the joggers with the boots to see if either looks good to me. All bottoms will have to go with those boots. I also want be bringing both blue and white striped tops. I’m pretty sure I’ll sub in the plain black one that’s arriving tomorrow (same as the blue and white ribbed one otherwise). I don’t have a find yet.

The Love tee is great and it is long enough on me that I can semi-tuck it into jeans. Perfect for me, but that may be a bit short for you.

I’ve already made some conclusions - keep tri-climate, ditch other jacket. Bring two layering pieces. Only one long sleeved blouse (the red and black, since it’s dressier.) It helps me a lot to write all this out, and to receive feedback, so thank you. My husband is no help in this department.

Madrid is a very sophisticated European city but we needed every bit of Spanish we knew and even then accidentally ordered some very strange foods and gave up even trying to drive. The old towns like Granada and Seville are on top of hills. Cars have to park outside the old town which means at the bottom of the hill. We took trains from Madrid and were glad we did. They drop you off in the old town so no climbing a steep hill on what can be a hot day. Be sure to go to the Sophia and other art museums in Madrid. Our sons did not want to leave, and they were not art students. Also be sure to check to see if you will be there for the changing of the guard at the palace...amazing with horses pulling cannon and they are fired as part of the ceremony. It is only held once a month, if I remember correctly. Everything closes mid afternoon but dinner starts early with tapas. Do not wait to eat at the usual US dinner time. Dinner is much later.

That is extreme Rachy. I’d take 1 blue jean, 1 black jean, 3rd bottom, dress, probably limit to 2 between light jackets and cardigans (so maybe one of each). Definitely I’d still take a rain layer if some sort. Prob only need one stripe shirt, says she who doesn’t really wear stripes.

Your shoe choices look very similar to my own. I’d personally want one non jean bottom in the mix.

I’m huge on traveling light... I’d only take the one pair of black jeans. Jeans are heavy. And even with rolling carryon, one always ends up lifting it a lot. I’m an extremist tho...

This looks good. I like the idea of taking the step hems. As for the jacket, the gearish one looks like a great colour for you -- I would try both on with your other options and see.

Can you bring a few lightweight scarves? They can change up an outfit really well and also are easy to stuff in a knapsack if it gets warm.

Shoes look good.

My stepdaughter lives in Granada! It is beautiful, I hear, and a wonderful place to visit! Lots of great tapas and you can go to Lorca's house!

Sarah, I was also thinking of bringing just the shell plus the light puffer, if it works out. I’ll know tomorrow. (I wanted the puffer anyway, so no big deal if I like it but don’t take it.)

As for jeans, I was thinking of those too, plus the blue skinnies because they are the most comfortable and I want to travel in them. The ones with the flower are slightly more comfortable than the step hems, but I agree I may have a matching issue there.

Cee - yes, I will be able to narrow down more when I have everything piled up together.

Sal - I like the jacket too! It’s nice, which is why I chose it. It’s s going to be quite warm the days we leave, so I’ll have to carry it. That’s been another hesitation of mine. I could wear the shell and try to pack the fleece, I suppose. I’d pr ably leave the blue cardigan out and pick a lighter topper in that scenario.

I don’t expect to wash the jeans beyond spot washing. The joggers seemed like a better option for the capsule before I got the Chelsea boots. I need to see how those go together before I decide because I think I’ll be living in them. They are saving my back and hip right now. (The blue sneakers are in case I do something sporty after all,). Anyway, the joggers are super lightweight, which is in their favor. I don’t expect to take more then 3 bottoms plus the dress.

I think it looks good.

I think three bottoms and one dress is about right (two-three days for each pair of jeans plus the dress as an option too). Are the joggers on top of three pairs of jeans - if so I think you could dump one pair of jeans.

I would be tempted to take the gear jacket if it is the most practical.......I quite like it!! Nice with jeans and boots.

Not all the tops have to go with everything - as long as they go with one bottom that is fine. I would pack the ones you like and a variety of weights. Jeans are a nightmare to wash in hotel sinks but tops work fine as do socks and lingerie. And at a push the dress or joggers.

Have a fab time!!!!!

What you've shown looks OK to me, Christina.

Just don't take any tops you won't need.

I vote black jeans and your new step hems. They’re versatile and current, whereas the embroidered ones may not go with all of the tops.

Can you bring just the shell of the 3 in 1 in case of wet weather?

I find travel capsule posts helpful, and so I’ll share mine. That said, it’s not done. (Also, I’m posting too much lately, but then I’ll be gone for a while!)

We are going to Madrid, Seville and Granada, with ten nights total in the ground.

Things to remember:

1. I pack carry on only, no exceptions and I won’t be talked out of it. :)

2. Looks like temps will be anywhere from 60-70 F during the day, and down to 40’s as a low. This likely means more like 50’s when I’m out in the evenings. There is some rain expected but not a lot.

3. Due to make back injury I don’t expect activity beyond as much walking as I can tolerate.

4. I have opted against my hiking boots since getting those magical Born boots, which I posted separately about. I expect them to work with the dress if I want to wear it. The other two shoes are backup options. The metallic sneakers could be fun at night. I am set on those three shoes and don’t expect to change.

5. No time for laundry but will have the ability to hand wash delicates etc.

6. There is a slim chance I will need the bathing suit at one of my hotels.

7. Not shown: sleeping clothes of leggings and tee, tapering plain tank top, tights, and underthings. Also I’ll have a scarf and gloves, plus something to cover my ears (lightweight beanie or headband)

Problems:
1. I am stuck on outwear. I don’t want to bring the purple tri-climate jacket, which is the most sensible option because it’s 3 in 1. It’s more gear looking than the rest of what I am packing. I may prefer the army green jacket, with a packable light puffer for evenings (on order from Amazon, so it may or may not work out). Neither is great for rain, but not tons of rain is expected. The army green jacket is roomy enough to layer the blue long cardigan or grey jacket underneath, too.

2. How many jeans? I see the black jeans as a casual evening option with the blouses, as the length is fine with all those shoes. And the blue skinnies are coming. I’d like one of the other three options, ideally but am having trouble deciding.

3. I always pick too many tops. I’ll probably leave something out once I actually pack. This is a work in process.(The red and black ticks out like a sore thumb but will match all the jeans.)

4. I ordered the plain black version of the striped cropped ribbed top from BR and am probably likely to switch the two.

Any feedback is appreciated! I’m not leaving until Thur night.

ETA: Final choices. Not shown - emerald green pashmina, tights, pj’s and a basic tank top for layering. I didn’t even have to use the expansion option for my roll aboard!

Plane outfit - dark skinny jeans from AT, black cardigan from AT, Love First tee, and Chelsea boots.
