FYI, this capsule mostly worked out, but I didn't consider that my hotel was not near enough the places we were going at night. I wasn't able to swing by and grab a jacket and change for dinner, because each day we stopped back in the hotel in the hotel (which was on the way to stuff but not at stuff) during the hot part of the day. And it did get hotter than predicted, and the only rain I encountered would have been find with an umbrella. I wanted the jacket to and from the airport at home, though, so it was good to have.

I'd have taken the jumpsuit instead of the dress -- it would have been more comfortable for walking around during the day (no chafing). Never wore the latter. A dressier pair of light pants would have fit the bill too.

I also didn't need the utility jacket, as I pretty much had to be willing to carry my evening covering with me for hours before I needed it. The kimono was a winner in that regard.

I couldn't have predicted most of these needs before I was there, though, so I'm pretty happy.

Ha, JAileen! I already purged the ones I didn’t want anymore. Now I have too many that I do like, but that’s a separate problem. No chance of me passing on any of these tops that I’m bringing on the trip. I’m glad of the chance to wear clothes for somewhat warmer temperatures anyway.

I have no space in my house for souvenirs anyway.... I’ll buy some hot sauce and other consumable items, and maybe some jewelry.

I was going to suggest you take some of your Boho tops, and the ones you don’t like, just leave there, allowing space for souvenirs.

In case anyone was dying to know, my final capsule is above. I still have too many tops, but I like the variety to choose from and I have the space. I added a dressier sandal, switched in my triclimate coat (no more leather jacket plus raincoat), and switched the denim jacket for a utility jacket. I also settled on jeans.

I had a brainwave - my Columbia coat is tri-clmate, which means the shell can zip off of the fleece liner. That can be my winter coat for travel to and from, and I can zip off the shell when it's rainy. I think the shell will be a bit heavy for the temperatures, but I can wear a light layer underneath, and it should certainly stand up to heavy rain. This means both the leather jacket and raincoat can stay home!

The high temperature forecast has decreased: it looks like it will be no more than 72°. I’m going to have to rethink which semi-nice outfit I’m bringing as I think the jumpsuit will be too cold. This may also knock out the sandals, but the flats I have currently probably aren’t supportive enough so I’m not sure what I’ll do now.

Rain coat for sure, it may be overcast and misty for a while before and after the rain passes. I made the mistake of trying to use my umbrella this weekend. I'm sure it was comical for those who saw me wrestle with it. lol

mrsc, thanks for the intel from on the ground, so to speak. Just what I needed! Sounds like the rain coat is a good idea, since it’s light enough for my day bag too? Am umbrella won’t help in that wind!

As someone who lives just west of NOLA, I would not bring the white jeans or dress. Mostly because the predicted rain is severe weather, which will be similar to this past weekend's weather that brought 50 mph winds. Shirts I would do 2 short sleeve and 2 sleeveless. Since the leather jacket and pullover are your non negotiables I would use those as my layering pieces. The leather jacket and your pullover sweater will keep you warm enough if the temps decide to drop 40 degrees again after it rains. It's been in the 40s/50s and breezy in the mornings the last few days with it climbing to 70s in the afternoon. So definitely layer. Since you'll have the sweater and jacket, I'd pack the kimono as a lighter layering piece. If you're bringing the jumpsuit I would go with the casual jeans. The jumpsuit will serve as your dressy piece if you do decide to do something fancier.

No go on the dressy shoes,
Angie - I have foot problems the best of times, my back hurts right now (I’m even in physical therapy, but I’m mostly mobile), and we walk a lot. My husband also hates cabs with an irrational passion, so no cabbing to and from restaurants. (We are celebrating his birthday, or else I’d insist.) It’s his one irrational point, so I live with it most of the time and he doesn’t argue the we times I do insist. Ah, marriage. Anyway, my dressy shoes won’t cut it for me right now :(

I can’t wait to see the art!

Jenn, it’s really l2 and 3/4 days and 2 nights (the first night we are arriving late). I definitely DO NOT intend to bring all of this! But I am veeeerry indecisive.
Also, I treat packing like a logic puzzle to try to optimize my options in limited space, which I guess is why I wanted help.

The pullover and leather jacket are for travel exclusively. That warmth level is non-negotiable for me. It won’t be warm when I leave and return home and I freeze on planes. The sweater is what I’m wearing to worn the day I leave; I could change but for various reasons regarding logistics I may not have time to before I leave.

One graphic tee is for sleeping in; threw it in because I had the find.

Otherwise, I agree about editing bottoms, tops and toppers, but I’m just stumped about which ones to drop.

For toppers, what’s better? Leaving aside the leather jacket, is it better to have the denim jacket and cardigan, or the denim jacket and kimono? Seems like the raincoat is probably a good idea because it packs up very light and small. On the other hand, I hate wearing it when it’s not raining (stifles me), so it can’t replace anything and maybe I should just suck it up with an umbrella?

If I’m taking one jean, I’ll leave out the white ones in case they get dirty. Are casual or dressy ones better for the one pair I bring? Dressy seems better but they’re not as comfortable for wearing on the plane (which i’d almost certainly have to do).

As for shirts, aside from Led Zep, I don’t know. I have the most trouble narrowing that category down.

I can choose between the joggers easily (the green ones). People keen warning me about the humidity, which is why I included linen ones, but it’s not supposed to be bad when I’m there.

I think I don’t need a fourth pair of shoes given the short time and the fact that I’ll wear the hiking boots almost exclusively for day. I did so for a longer trip a few months ago and it worked out great; we walk A LOT when we travel, and they caused the least pain of anything I’ve ever tried. The other two are really evening options. I need to go with my most tried and true shoes since my back hurts right now. None of the flats I own will work after a long day of waking-not enough support. I take only three pairs for much longer trips anyway. So I’m very comfortable leaving the shoe assortment as is.

I was there last November for 5 days on my own while hubby was conferencing. The weather was delightful, no higher than 78 F and no lower than 55F. Very little humidity at that time, unless going further inland. I wore mostly cropped or ankle jeans, lightweight tops in linen, cotton or a thin polyester blouse and one jeans skirt. Like you, I wore a leather jacket on the plane, ankle jeans, and one of the tops and packed a medium blue jeans jacket. All were interchangeable in color and proportion, and I believe I wore all combinations. Hardly ever happens! I felt like Angie with her well thought out capsules. I also packed a very lightweight raincoat and wore it the one day it rained. For the one dressy-ish occasion, i had a white cotton midi skirt. I too, did a lot of walking (try to fit in a trip to the Whitney Plantation!). Footwear was leather sneakers, flat neutral sandals, and black flat ankle pointy toe lace up D’orsays. All were comfortable, but mostly sneaks during the day for walking. It all worked, but maybe because the weather was so grand. Enjoy!

As Jenn mentioned, I would pair down the tops and bottoms, choose one dressy outfit, and bring a dressy pair of shoes.

Makes sense bringing the leather moto. An umbrella too.

Do the three days include travel days? From your finds and your notes about the jeans, I'm counting:

2 jeans
2 lightweight joggers
1 dress
1 jumpsuit

2 graphic tees
2 dressier tees
2 sleeveless blouses
2 long sleeved tops

1 pullover sweater
1 cardigan
1 kimono
1 leather jacket
1 denim jacket
1 raincoat

1 sneakers
1 hikers
1 sandals

1 swimsuit
sleepwear/gear

If this were me, I'd edit down the tops to one in each category, narrow down the toppers, and add another pair of shoes...maybe some comfortable flats. I'd probably only bring 1 jeans and 1 joggers, and choose between the jumpsuit and the dress too, but I understand wanting options.

Thanks Molly! I really doubt I'll want the leather there, but it will be good to and from the airport at home. It won't be much warmer than the 50's here, and both trips will be at night. I run cold, and I know I'll be miserable during the travel portions without it--just seems easier to bring than wool or something. The exact travel coat I bring may change on the day I leave.

I have a lightweight raincoat earmarked for the bag; don't have a find though.

My family is from NOLA so I get down there at least once a year. I actually was there in Feb and March of this year. Overall, it is a very casual city so your wardrobe capsule looks good for just about anything you might encounter. Just a few thoughts; it will probably be too warm even at night for a leather jacket. I only brought a light cardigan with me and only wore it on the plane. NOLA is also the second rainiest city in the country (more rainy days than the Pacific NW). I ALWAYS bring a raincoat and an umbrella when I go. Have a great time. The people are wonderful and the food is delicious.

cindy, that's my plan for the most part, but the forecast for humidity doesn't look all that bad to me. The warmer things are mostly for travel and indoors in the air conditioned hotel. Oh, this reminds me that I'll probably throw in one plain colored tank top. Temps look like they'll hit 78 on two days and 71 the last day..

NOLA is stifling. Seriously, the humidity is brutal, even in what passes for winter down there. Lightweight layers in breathable fabrics. I cannot wear synthetics in South Louisiana, they suffocate me.
NOLA is beautiful, enjoy your weekend!

Hi everyone! I'm heading south to NOLA for a long weekend (3 days) this coming week. Temps will be 60-80 F (that's the entire temperature range for each day), and rain is predicted for one day. I have never been there. We will be there before Jazz Fest starts, so muddy festival grounds aren't a factor. I will give some background on the trip and my packing plans, and then I have a couple of questions about what to include or exclude.

Things to know:
-I may wear the leather jacket with the blue sweater on the plane, as it will be kind of cold in NYC when I leave. I may choose a different warm jacket to bring, though, but I run cold and need something substantial for travel.
-I am bringing a denim jacket that's not pictured here, in a medium blue wash. I'll also bring leggings for sleep and exercise (paired with the Led Zep tee) and maybe a coverup for the swimsuit. I have a light raincoat to add (no find)
-We will be walking a lot (as much as more sore back allows), hence the hiking boots, which look like hi-tops and are the best things for my feet and back. The other two pairs are also supportive and will work for nicer evening outfits.

-We don't plan on going to any very fancy places to eat. However, my husband and I will be celebrating his 40th at a restaurant that's good but skews casual; the jumpsuit or dress will work for that setting.
-Clothing wise, I like to have some options to choose from that mix and match (I don't plan out each day), but I don't like to over pack either. I plan to fill a large carry-on suitcase.

Questions:
-I don't need 4 pairs of jeans (the blue floral sweater picture is actually find for those jeans). Which 2 should I take? I doubt white is a good idea, since I'm clumsy and will be drinking.... but it's appealing in theory since it will be warm. The fringe bottom jeans have yet to arrive and may not work on me at all, but I'm open to bringing them if they do. So that would leave me with the cropped black ones and the faded blue casual ones.
Will the black ones be too hot if I wear them during the day?

-Do I have the right variety of tops and layers? I could probably stand to delete one of the short sleeved tops.

-Am I missing anything? (As I said, we aren't going to any of the very dressy restaurants.)

ETA: capsule editied down below. Not pictured- sleep leggings, denim jacket, very light rain jacket, tank top for layering under sweater. Switched the kimono for one that will go with more tops, and switched a printed top for a solid. The jeans I’ll decide between later this week. There may still be a couple too many items but I don’t mind too much.
