During the worst fires in the 70s, my parents’ property in a suburban area was a refuge for evacuated friends and their friends — we even had someone’s trailered horse. This last round the fire stopped just up the block. The hills are certainly managed better than in the 70s; storms and their dry lightening have gotten worse. So let’s not brush this off like it’s someone else’s problem to just manage. With continued warming and drying this will be everyone’s problem.

I didn't think we'd be affected in the Great Lakes region of the US, but we are today. It is hazy, and the light is kind of weird feeling (if that makes sense, almost like the strange light you get when there is no bad weather, but tornadoes on the way). The sun yesterday afternoon was high in the sky, but haloed in red/orange. Originally it wasn't supposed to affect air quality, but is it now teetering between unhealthy for sensitive groups and overall unhealthy. Hopefully it will be gone tomorrow.

However, dealing with the smoke is nothing compared to dealing with the fires, and my heart goes out to those who have lost their homes or who live in the danger zone. What a horrible thing.

The Marshall Fires here burned down lots of urban homes and businesses. Schools and hospitals were evacuated causing traffic jams and some had to drive across burning grass to get out of the worst of it. One friend lost her home and everything. The top soil has to be removed before rebuilding can be done. We had our son and his family and large dog for two weeks in our tiny 2 bedroom house and came very close to having to evacuate.to a nearby YMCA which also had to evacuate. My grandsons school lost 60% of its pupils. His best friend moved to NewYork State leaving him with no one to play with or join for lunch. I hope this summer is not a repeat. Not everyone is in a forested area.

I am nowhere near as sanguine as RC about the fires. The California ones have been unusually bad, burning into long developed areas that have never burnt before. So it’s not a matter of silly people building in a forest interface.

Not an overreaction at all, Bijou -- it's very serious, for sure. Different regions affected differently of course -- we are a big country. And climate change definitely a part of the problem, but as Carla says, more sensible management would also help.

We saw it on the Canadian news and it looked to really be affecting the air quality, we were so lucky to mostly miss the haze and smoke as it had cleared from BC after the Alberta fires for the first 2 days when we did Whistler and Squamish (thank you Helena for that suggestion during my planning months ago) and then in Saskatoon where it had been very hazy the previous week it had also mostly cleared. And then again in Victoria there were fires on the Island but not where we were.
Photo below of DH and DD2 on the Sea to Sky Gondola at Squamish- I highly recommend!
Hope you are all coping.

Not an overreaction. These particular fires are affecting a lot of people. There is, however, a lot of hysteria and wrongheaded finger pointing in the media as folks attempt to score political points.

DH has a cousin who works for a non-governmental group that studies urban/wildfire interface and comes up with plans to mitigate disaster like building codes and landscape design. He’s an interesting guy to talk to…

Not an overreaction, Bijou. I appreciate your post very much ❤️ All the windows in the building had to be closed. I wore an N95 mask for a few days. The mail carrier was called off on Wednesday. Thanks for the concern

We got slammed on Wednesday.

I was glad it cleared out because our neighbors hosted a quinceañera Saturday night, outdoors under a massive tent, and it would not have been fun for them to dance while choking on smoke.

It was bad here a few days ago, air quality was in the red zone. I could smell the smoke when I went out, and it was quite hazy. I kept my car windows and sunroof closed, which I never do, and didn't exercize outside.
Everything was fine yesterday though!

Thanks Bijou. No risk where I live, unless my idiot neighbor decides to shoot fireworks into the ravine behind our homes like he did last year! Things are dry here. The smoke from the (far away) fires in Quebec were an issue earlier in the week, and DS#2 thought the house was on fire (due to smell) when he woke up on day 1 of the event. Some good soaking rains are in the forecast starting Monday.

Like Suz wrote, this is more difficult for the Maritimes and Quebec, where it’s not the norm.

In the past 10 years the ‘biggest’ fires by sq km have been Australia (4), Canada and Russia (2 each) California and Bolivia (1 each). For loss of life, it’s Australia and California.

Fire is part of the natural disturbance regime in the boreal forest, and there are huge tracks of uninhabited forest that require fire for renewal. It becomes a problem, of course, when the land management around communities does not take these events into consideration - similar to allowing the building of homes in flood zones. It’s lovely to have a home or cottage nestled amongst mature trees, or at the edge of a river - but there’s a risk.

LOL, Lisa! I know it's technically accurate but I confess my teeth were on edge with every New York Times report of CANADIAN fires. I mean, you know, we're sorry that our carbon sinks are on the fritz and have turned into carbon source, but hey, it's not like we sent all that smoke down there on purpose! (Or maybe it is our government's diabolical plan to smoke them out!)

In all seriousness, it's horrible, and I feel for everyone in the east. We've had this in the west now for years and talk of wildfire season, but it's a whole new experience for the Maritimes, Quebec, Ontario.

Ahh Lisa I've had the same feeling ... I feel so bad for our Americans neighbours ... And also have a small sense of what our Australian fabbers must got through. Thankfully for us our area is far from the danger zone, but the smoke has been something else. Love to anyone dealing with these closer to their doorstep. So kind Bijou x

Just a quick post to say I am thinking of you in Canada and the US as you face the massive fires and the smoke haze. Bushfires are unfortunately common in Australia and as I live near a natural bush park, something that I have had on my doorstep on two occasions. The fire threat is the one thing I truly hate about summer.

I hope your are staying safe and the air quality improves. It is nice to know that firefighters from across the globe have volunteered to assist.
