Re: black: May I join my sigh to everybody else's?
There never seems to be any other color left in my size, especially for big pricey items like this.

I do have a white knee length puffer and although it is nice it is a bit shapeless and I end up looking akin to the Michelin Tire in it.

I have a Lole one (same as Suz). It has lasted for 5 years and is very warm. Lole has a nice styling. They are from Montreal after all. I am a big fan of Montreal.

Canada Goose is fashionable in Canada. Everyone in Montreal and Toronto walks around wearing their Canada Goose parkas with pride. They usually have Sorels on too.

I think the Canada Goose parka line is one of the warmest you can get. Also MEC has a parka that is meant for northern wear. Both are too warm for me however my brother has one and he works as a pilot in Northern Canada.
Many women I know have the Kensington and are very warm and happy with it. It comes in some great colours. In terms of fashion - it is practical and when its cold that trumps everything - well at least here.

wow...people are very committed to their puffers! thanks for everyone's feedback.

i plan to order a couple from s&k and from canada goose. although i have already been instructed by my "mom" also to get the uniqlo. i need to think about when i wished for a knee length puffer. that should guide whether i want a citified or a ex-urbanified coat. also, this winter is predicted to colder than normal though less snowy.

I have two puffers from Lands End, one cherry red and one more cranberry.

I lived in a very cold area but worked in a large city and felt my coats were not 'city' worthy, like I was the country cousin going to the big city.....then we had the coldest winter in years and decided I didn't care. Many people told me how much they loved my red coat. I was very warm, it was the warmest rated coat in their catalogue. And unless I go on a job interview or somewhere where a first impression is extremely important, I'm wearing it again this winter, every day. I also commute by train so warmth is important.

Lots of my coworkers wear the Canada goose jacket, probably in the hundreds (building holds 2000+)

More love for the Trillium from me. Mine is my go-to outerwear when I need to be warm and protected from the elements. As far as being fashionable, I can't be much help, because freezing and shivering NEVER look attractive in my books. I'd rather look cosy and happy with rosy cheeks from the fresh air.

To my way of thinking, the Soia and Kyo coats are gorgeous, stylish, and totally practical if you are moving around in an urban environment using transit and frequently moving in and out of shops and offices. If you are going to be walking outside for periods of time with wind and freezing temps, it's hard to beat the warmth and protection of a Canada Goose parka. That hood alone can be a life-saver when conditions are brutal.

The preponderance of black puffers never fails to disappoint me, Angie. I know that black sells. Perhaps people think it is "slimming" in a puffy coat.

I can't speak to those particular styles, but hubs bought me a short navy Canada Goose puffer two years ago and I LOVE it. I was skeptical at the time, thinking did I really need this kind of jacket, but I've worn it a lot. Great for a touch of sporty luxe in outerwear. It's miraculously lightweight and warm but I don't get overheated in it, which tends to happen with heavier weight coats. (Yes, I know you northern clime folks will totally scoff at me for a short puffer, but it works for me!) Quality is great. I've washed it and it did beautifully. Packs like a dream, and actually works really well for carrying on flights because it works nicely as a pillow. ;-)

I am Queen Am Always Cold. I have a knee-length Soia & Kyo puffer that is VERY warm and beautifully made. I firmly believe in buying a Canadian puffer for below freezing temperatures when you run really cold like I do. (A glimpse of my black S&K puffer below that's 5 years old). I don't think other puffers are quite as well made or as warm as the ones made for Canada - although LandsEnd puffers are extremely popular in the US. S&K has a stunning grey wool puffer in at the moment that is killer. I love that the S&K brand is fashionable and less gear-ish.

YES. Aquatalia boots are warmer because they are weatherproof. Choos and Fryes are not.

That is so weird. The Lole site doesn't seem to be working for me now. I don't know if it will work for you. I was trying to see what else they have and keep getting "bad request." Huh.

Anyway, I can absolutely vouch for the quality and warmth of this coat. I expect it will last me another four years at minimum -- it's in great shape, having had a ton of wear. I am just sick of the grey and want another coat to add a bit of variety.

ETA: It looks like the one I linked to before might be a "long" version -- here is the same thing but shorter, probably the right length: http://www.lolewomen.com/ca/en/luw0252.html

Oh. And another thought: Lole. This is another Montreal brand and the makers of my (extremely warm) puffer coat. I would say this brand skews somewhere between the "luxe practical gear" look of Canada Goose and the "warm fashion" look of Soia and Kyo. Which befits its beginnings as a yoga wear manufacturer. ;)

Here's an updated version of my now 4 year old and still in perfect condition puffer: http://www.lolewomen.com/ca/en/luw0279.html

I find it has really nice features, some "gearish" touches that make it quite practical, but a nicer quality fabric and manufacturing. It fits me well in the XS sizing.

I don't have to layer under it. As you see.

I'll bet you could call them. I've tried on their stuff before -- in my experience the fit is on the slim side of tailored. (That was a few years ago when styles were more fitted generally, though). I was trying on wool coats and the waist placement was fine on me in XS. And I'm a bit short waisted. But a few inches taller than you. FWIW.

Angie might have more info because I do think she has one of their puffers from a few years back.

http://www.soiakyo.com/ca/en/c.....large-hood

The model is 5'10" so shorter coats from them should work as knee length for us regular height types.

http://www.soiakyo.com/ca/en/d.....h-fur-hood

http://www.soiakyo.com/ca/en/l.....h-fur-hood

Those are some options....

Suz...which of the soia and kyo would you recommend? i don't layer well so i would wear a thin wool sweater or a fitted bomber at most, since my office runs very warm and i have a space heater to boot.

hmmm...my tolerance for cold is really really low and i'm not a big layer-er under coats even in the winter --too claustrophobic. so getting a dressy coat in a looser style to accommodate layers is not a viable option, unfortunately. props to those who work this style angle well.

i might just have to order all three coats and try them on. the most important thing is knee length with down from neck to hem, windproof and not look like i'm holing up in a log cabin writing my manifesto.

That's why I recommended the other brand -- theirs are more fashion-y. But also very warm -- built for Montreal winters.
