For me, often the superhero is so well disguised that I am caught off guard at it's ability to save any situation, not to mention longevity. But once in a while I see something...and my spidey* senses tingle (*we are talking superheros) and I know that this item is extraordinary and will transform me whnever and wherever I wear it.

Are superheroes statement pieces? Or basics? Maybe my pink skirt is turning into a superhero -- or is it more of a statement piece? Denim jacket is a given, but is that simply a basic?

I also have a Theory blazer, also purchased for a song at the Rack on a whim. Charcoal grey, boyfriend style. It is definitely a superhero! And yes I suppose that was a surprise.

I love Theory though I'm hit-or-miss with the fit. I also have this navy knit dress that has turned into a superhero this summer. I will take a pic next time I wear it. It's a very simple dress -- kind of an LBD but in navy. There's something about it, comfort, ease, yet looks sharp. Can be dressed up or down. Can span all seasons. In the spring I wore it a lot with boots, in summer with flat sandals. If I'd known it would be a superhero, yes I would have duplicated it.

I also have a black ponte knit jacket that I'd call a superhero. It has an interesting style -- I don't know how to begin to describe it. It instantly makes any outfit funky.

Shoot, girl, I worked at DC Comics for 15 years! If *I* can't spot Clark Kent, no one can! Sometimes they pretend to be workhorses, but trust me - they're coming to your rescue!

I wish I did have the "X-ray vision" to spot my superheroes in advance!
For one thing, I would buy duplicates.

One of my biggest superheroes has been an ancient black wool Eileen Fisher rather structured closure-free cardigan that works well as a jacket substitute, and I have worn it just to death. It has gone with me on every trip I've taken for years, and I travel a lot.

It's finally starting to show its age, and I'm struggling to replace it. Of course they don't make that style any more, but if they did I'd buy two or three more and they'd probably last the rest of my life.

They often surprise me, but by basing myself on past experience, I sometimes manage to figure it out in the store.

I just bought two scoop-necked Tshirts with 3/4 sleeves in a soft rayon material, one black and one white, hoping that they will be superheroes. (Love that metaphor, by the way.) I've loved that sleeve length, love the colours which will go with everything (black for slimming, white for brightening), love the texture of the material, have loved that silhouette, so I'm hoping I managed to pierce the disguise this time.

sort of? I knew when I tried on my green drapey dress - and the BF proclaimed it looked like a paper bag, and I left it behind - that I *had* to go back the next day to see if it was still there. Lucky me, it was. I've worn that thing more times in the last 3 months than probably *any* dress I've ever owned. Did I know it was a superhero? Maybe not. But, I knew I had to have it.

great post! my zara blazer is the kind of superhero that gives an extra punch to every outfit. I love the colour and it makes me really happy. I also like that structured streamline more "flowy" items. But I did *not* know that it would be such a workhorse both for casual and more dressy looks

My Theory blazer is turning out to be one of those pieces that elevates everything I wear with it. It goes with anything and adds instant panache. I had no idea of that when I bought it though! I just thought it fit well and was a good price at the Rack.

Does this happen to you? Do you know how to identify these sneaky superheroes when they are quietly lurking behind their shy nerdy alter egos?
