Everyone, thank you so much! A confession - I wanted "cool" but didn't know what was considered cool these days. I have some great options now, and I have learned to go with a real athletic shoe or to look for a fashion shoe with a removable insole.
I am thankful for the members of this forum - their willingness to share their experience and the generous way they share their time. You guys are the best!

i have flat-ish high volume feet and a high arch. i add arch support inserts in my converse laceless. just bought the all stars and i have the jack purcells which i prefer because the tongue is shorter and hits at a better spot. i think i can train the all stars tongue...if i can't i'll return to zappos.

i also have the nike fly knit 3's in a fluoro yellow, this is close.

both the knitted body of the nike and the lacelessness of the cons accommodate my high arch.

hope you get a fun sneaker shoe.

I bought Jack Purcells for a Converse look but with more comfort. These have removable insoles so I'm able to wear my custom orthotics with them.

I wear my fashion sneakers--I have the Josef Seibels below, but in gray--with a 3/4 insert like the one Deb shows above. I also wear the inserts in my favorite Paul Green wedge metallic high top sneakers (sorry, no Find for them). Both have gone the distance for sightseeing during travel.

FWIW, I second the New Balance retro sneaker suggestion. I have some and I love them...comfortable for a day of walking (though I would never run or otherwise really workout in them) I like that they can be worn in a "sporty-luxe" trendy type of way...JCrew and Athleta both sell them and style them in fun ways, and in fun colorways, but you can buy them on Amazon or at DSW, etc. also.

I agree, the 'fashion sneakers' are often pretty flat in the sole and not super-supportive. I've always found Vans (the lace-up ones) pretty sturdy, compared to something like Cons which have always felt too lightweight when I've tried them on. New Balance makes some retro-styled sneakers that are nonetheless designed for actual physical activity.

Anything called 'fashion sneakers" are, most likely, not what you want. to get the right shoe for the support and built for the activity, you have to get athletic shoes. and ones for your particular activity, running, cross trainers, walking etc. These are not the fashionable ones you mostly see on pinterest, etc. They mostly are the ones with the color combinations, bright colors, etc. You may try some Merrill and Dr. schools walking shoes that can sort of pass as fashion sneakers that are cushioned and offer some support.

I agree with Ann. There are sooo many options, and I love them all! I'm an old-school sneaker fan from way back. My favourites for a winter look are the old-school (sorry, there is that phrase again) Adidas Gazelle. They're suede, with a white bottom, and look modern , clean and streamlined. The black suede with white stripes is a classic, and there is also a navy suede pair with navy leather stripes on a taupe-y sole that are great too! Good solid walking shoes.

Marlene1, the choices are myriad and you haven't indicated which style you prefer. The only way to ensure support is to get a specific athletic shoe (running, walking, basketball etc.), as the skater-type slip ons, Converse and other old school high and low tops are usually pretty flat inside. They usually have some amount of padding though, depending on whether they are thin sole (like Keds from back in the day) or relatively thick soled. Also, orthotics are an option, as Deb has indicated.

Marlene, I have foot and leg issues and add these inserts to my sneakers and they work great. They also come in full length. I cut the full length pair to the shape of the toe box.

TexStyle's post (blogger look with sneakers) has prompted me to ask for recommendations for cool sneakers with good arch support and cushioning. Do they exist? I'd love some for travel, but it seems the cool sneaks are light on comfort. Thanks!
