Chrss_dlcrz - instead of measuring around each segment, just measure across.

To put it in math terms, circumference is irrelevant; diameter is all that counts.

No need to even measure, really, just eyeball it.

If your straight-across-the-front hip area is your widest place, your shape is pear.

My body measurement is:
Bust - 32 inch.
Waist - 26 inch.
Hips - 36 inch.
In body shape calculator it turns out bottom hourglass / pear so i don't know what my body shape is

The fact that when we hear "hourglass" we picture someone like Jessica Rabbit just means that that's the male fantasy of what hourglass means.

I mean, picture an actual real-life hourglass. It COULD have huge luscious curves and often does but that's not what makes it recognizable as an hourglass. What does that is its outline, exactly as Antje said above.

Hi shamagal 777.

I was wondering the samething. If I were a pear hour glass. My measurements are 88 -73 - 94. I have a small bust with my shoulders in-line with my hips. A pear shaped body as tiny shoulders that do not line up with the hips.

Conversely, I've wondered if a pear can be busty. Despite my thigh measurements, I've always felt that the pear description was not quite right for me because of my fuller bust.

Jules, I feel the same way. I have a strong enough shoulder line and am pretty busty considering how narrow my ribcage is (32DDD), which helps balance out my hips and thighs a bit. When I look at pics and in the mirror, I am right on the brink of hourglass and pear. I've come to realize that because of scoliosis, I am actually a pear on one side of my body but not the other. You can imagine how that made me feel like a bit of a freak.

What cracks me up is that I can tighten my glutes so that my saddlebags sort of tuck in and disappear, and I'm an instant IT! Too bad I can't hold that all the time.

Jules I can relate to that too. I may be an X style hourglass (ie I have a strong shoulder line), but to me the bits that I worry about are below the waist, so I find the tips for pears pretty useful. Unlike you, I have a very small bust, and find Angies tip's for the top halves of rectangles also helpful.
(Funny to be writing on a thread I also wrote on 3 years ago!)

It may be old but the discussion is relevant to me. I always thought I was a pear (and may have been when I was younger) but according to measurements I am definitely hourglass these days. And I am starting to see it that way in the mirror too. However, I have a big qualifier: even though my hips are not bigger than my shoulders, and only an inch bigger than my bustline, my hip and thigh shape, as well as my self-conciousness of that area, mean that I have a pear's concerns sometimes ie/ struggling with pants fit, minimizing the bottom half visually, drawing the eye up. If I look in the mirror and see THIGHS I am not happy.

I measured my front width of my shoulders (15.7"), waist (8,1") and hips (13") by standing in front of a wall and marking my body shape on the wall with a pencil. So while my bust is only 32C my shoulder to hip ratio is low (13/15,7=0,825) And that makes me an hourglass. One of the greatest examples is Nina Dobrev. She has small boobs and chest but her large shoulders balances her small torso.

Yes - to add to the comments you've already received on this subject. Your shoulders and hips are typically the widest parts of your body when someone looks at you straight-on, regardless of your bust size. If your shoulders and hips are basically equal width, and you have a defined waist, by my interpretation of Angie's guidelines you would be an hourglass.

Angie herself is not busty and calls herself a slim hourglass. So, yes, you can be an hourglass. a pear would have narrower shoulders; a rectangle a larger waist.

I think that according to what Angie has said on this forum you can be a small breasted hourglass.

From other sources, which soupandasandwich might be thinking of, hourglasses are often seen as inherently busty. Even Angie's early body type posts seem to presume a busty type, but she has nuanced that in forum responses to individuals

Malcontent, I think peariness is about the shoulder hip and you can absolutely have a busty pear. I remember meeting someone who I thought was the most quintessential looking pear and she was a D or DD.

I would say you are an hourglass because your shoulders and hips are balanced and you have a defined waist. It's true that many hourglasses have a large bust, but your bust is not significantly smaller than your hips, so your proportions are still pretty much hourglass. I think of pears as having a small bust and shoulders narrower than the hips.

That said, you may not be flattered by the same type of clothing that would flatter a more typical busty hourglass.

I disagree - I think that inherently makes you a variation of a pear. The classic hourglass is busty as well as hippy.

You can absolutely be an hour glass with a small bust (I'm one, too.) I had the same misconception and used to think that small bust meant I wasn't an hour glass but a pear. But then I learned that the criteria for being an hourglass is in the shoulder line, not the bust size. If your shoulders are wider, you have a defined waist and wider hips, you're an hour glass no matter what your bust size is.

Yes, you absolutely can be an hourglass w/ a small bust. I haven't posted photos of myself yet, but a few months ago when I asked for body type help, I was told I was an straight hourglass, based on my measurements. I have a small bust (A cup).

I have been spying on this forum for quite a while now, only waiting for an occasion to post something myself. Here it goes.

My question is whether you think the lable "hour glass" is appropriate when ones top-half is a little bit less well endowed? My first intuition would be that that makes one a 'racy rectangle', however, how about if you do have a waist?

Here are the measurements:
Shoulder-circum: 38,6
Bust-circum: 35
Waist: 26,8
Hips: 37,8

How would you call such a body-composition? Its all so confusing! Thanks again and please forgive any language-mistakes, English is not my native language (Dutch is).
