I'm with Vildy. Shortening the sleeve length--yes, totally doable. Reconstructing the armhole--nope, costly and unlikely that you'd be happy with the result. But, if it's a gift and not really returnable, can you wear it with skinnies, boots, and a heavy sweater for fall. Depending on the style of the jacket, I'm seeing more of that volume on top look in the fashion mags. It definitely looks different than the close cropped look than we've seen in the past years, but I kind of like it. It reminds me of the BF jean only this time you've swiped your BF's jacket.

You know what, let me offer a third opinion. It depends on your style journey.
If you take a look at outerwear, whether 3/4 jackets or coats, including leather, you'll see an awful lot of runway stuff that is too big all over and even has too long sleeve length. It's not what you'll see some woman next to you wearing right now, but there it is.
ETA: all of that, though, doesn't have waist shaping.

You can definitely have the length of the sleeves hemmed and it won't be too expensive (I had this done for minimal cost the last time I bought a leather jacket at Danier), but making the armholes smaller is a total deconstruction job and would ultimately affect the look of the rest of the jacket.

Sorry, Ramya!

I think it is possible, but would probably be very expensive.

yeah. Well, cutting it down a whole size is kinda worse than asking someone to make one from scratch. $$$

I think the amount of work involved will make the alterations very expensive. Can you return the jacket to your MIL and ask her to get you a smaller size?

Thanks Vildy ...
But then the whole jacket is kinda big but then arms are too big so maybe it's alterable??

Leather is sewn together in the first place, so yes. But too large armholes really can't be fixed if the rest of the jacket fits. You would end up with a missing piece as the sleeve is pulled back.

Consider making it a sleeveless jacket? Armholes wouldn't be a problem then!
