The idea of a warm cuddly flannel shirt is very appealing to me. I almost ordered one from L L Bean. I live in a very cold climate and warm clothing is a necessity. I also live in a place where people dress like lumberjacks and they are not making a fashion statement. I resisted buying a flannel shirt. It just seemed weird.

I like both heavier and thinner weight flannels. I find that they soften up considerably after washing.

I am also loving plaid shirts this season, and plaid flannel shirts for the winter. I do however like the heavier flannel shirts for the "oh no it's coming" cold, snowy winter. In fact, I just returned a flannel shirt to JCP (Worthington brand, I think) because it was too lightweight! I do love the heavier weight of the Joe Fresh flannel shirts (also JCP). I don't know how it compares to the LL Bean, I haven't seen that IRL yet.

I love the warm hug feel of the LLBean, but really don't think I could layer over it or I'd be way way too hot. The old navy ones are much lighter. Good luck on your search. Looks like there are lots of options.

I've loved a cheap flannel shirt I bought at target several years ago. Not the best drape, but i loved the color so much I couldn't resist. I turn it inside out & iron it with starch to give it a little more structure.

I think it does depends on how you want the shirt to look and drape or not, and your frame-- combination of drape and cut.
My shoulders and frame can't " stand up" to a heavy flannel and boxy cut if trying to look like a shirt-- will tend to look like a shirt- jac or the wool or fleece lined versions. Then to some extent I'm trying to avoid some aspects of the older lady wearing untucked shirt over T look, which can easily
skew frumpy on me , though it is less concern for winter home loungewear. This is partly because my pant options don't run toward " skinny".
fit.
I've held on to a microfleece shirt because it is warm but is less stiff.

I like the weight of the LL Bean as a Fall/Winter shirt. I do have a cotton plaid shirt that is not from flannel, just a wrinkly shirting material. I like being able to wear that in warmer weather or with more layers in cold weather. If you want one that is more versatile I would get a lighter weight that you can add under layers to for warmth.

I don't mind the weight, but it must be soft and still drape. You should try the Old Navy ones too- they are very lightweight (I have the one below) and best for layering since they are not too heavy.

I am with kkards; it should have some weight to it and provide warmth, but it can't be so heavy as not to drape... But I am not a fan of button up/down shirts, so the drape requirements might just be due me feeling uncomfortable in snug/stiff in button up/down shirts.

I love the weight of the L.L. Bean shirt for myself, but completely understand your need for a lighter weight flannel, Deb.

I recently also picked up this gingham flannel one from Banana Republic, and that is definitely a lightweight shirt. I have the blue, but it also comes in charcoal. It's soft, and feels like nice quality (I have washed it once, no problems).

I'm with ya Deb on team lightweight flannel. For me it's critical that the fabric is fluid enough AND if I'm going to wear it in the office or inside, I have to be able to reduce down to comfortable layers. I don't think I could even wear flannel with a sweater unless spending a lot of time out in the cold (yay outdoor malls!) in the Winter here. Old Navy has been my godsend on lighter flannel shirts this season (so far).

Thanks for the review. I am always looking for quality of fabric. I bought one at Target and it is lightweight but I am afraid it is going to pill quickly. I think my perfect flannel shirt would be a medium weight that has some drape and is made from an excellent fabric that holds up over time.

Yes - if I'm going to wear flannel - it has to be light weight! Otherwise, it just feels too non-drapey and structured. And then there is the whole lumber-jack vibe that (to me!) goes along with the thicker flannel fabric! Its not a vibe I'm striving for!

I've had a men's sized Lands End flannel for years and years, and I tend to wear it as an over shirt or jacket. In my climate it'd definitely be too warm to wear as my regular shirt. But in a colder climate I'd wear it as a first layer.

It probably depends on the climate. When Angie first started posting about plaid this fall, it was still hot where I live. I got a sheer silky plaid buttondown and wore it a lot. Then I wS in Estes Osrk and needed something warmer. I picked up a couple of light weight cotton and brushed cotton shirts. Now I want a heavy flannel hug from a flannel shirt and will probably even layer under and over it on frigid days. I would even like one in wool if it wasn't itchy.

I guess I like both.

Mine from the JCrew outlet is lighter weight and I could possibly wear a sweater over it, but I doubt I will because it's a little oversized. We'll see. Like you, I will probably layer a tee under for more warmth.

However, I am thinking about also getting a heavy one, also from JCrew, for colder days and for outdoors. (That's below, in Finds.) My house can be drafty and I hate to wear tons of layers.

Good point! I actually wore out a lightweight flannel shirt I had years ago, and I'm not sure I would wear my LL Bean one nearly as much simply because it's so warm. This is a good argument not to duplicate in Bean-wear. Will have to check out Old Navy since sleeves tend to be long on me even in Petites.

I live in a very cold climate (it snowed today) -- I work in a cold (63 degree) office and still preffer a lighter flannel than the l.l.bean. My complaint is about drape. The l.l.bean didn't collapse back in on me, and didn't stretch with me the way a regular flannel does.

I think it is climate related. But it could also be how warm you run. I prefer my flannels to be thick and warm - sort of like a button down sweater. But then, we got down to negative 45 last winter, so there is that!

I would think thicker would = better quality. I would also look at how well the pattern is matched at the seams and if the colors look almost as vibrant on the inside as on the outside - another indicator of quality - colorfast or prone to fade. How about the workmanship - seams, buttons or snaps? Does the collar lie flat? How easily does the fabric wrinkle?

I like lighter weight ones too, but these days I'm starting to run warmer (sigh, I suppose it's mild hot flashes), so I'd rather have lighter layers that I can put on and take off rather than one heavy garment.

I hear you! I bought several of the very lightweight boyfriend length flannels from Old Navy for my post-surgery capsule. Super cheap, and I have literally lived in them for 5 weeks. They wash great (the arms shrink, so size up) and don't need ironing. I also bought a couple heavier ones from Urban Outfitters for snuggly Winter wear.
