JackieC, I wanted a pair of full-on neon yellow ones, too! Asics did have a pair, but they were last year's stock and my size was gone. The pink ones I ended up getting were the same model.

Staysfit, one of the problems, though, with buying running shoes is that you have to choose from the pairs that are comfortable. Since the vast majority are crazy colours/patterns, the chances of the one or two relatively tame pairs in the store also being the ones that are comfortable is slim. Such was the case for me. :-(

LisaP, mine are for athletic use only too. Which is why I tolerate them.

I actually like some of the neon, especially the pinks. But unfortunately when I recently needed a new pair of new running shoes, I ordered my go-to Brooks Ravenna in a fun black and pink option, only to find the model changed and bothered my feet while running. I tried on many pairs at the local running store, and the ones that fit the best are a strange neon yellow-green that I don't really enjoy. I purchased them anyway because I need to keep my feet happy while running. But it is annoying! I'm thinking of buying new shoelaces to replace the bright yellow ones. Not sure if cheap laces will hold up while running, but it's worth a shot..

...and may I add the total overload of hot pink, with nary a true red in the bunch??! "Men wear red; ladies wear pink" seems to be the additional main idea ....Yes this drives me nuts. I ended up buying men's runners last winter just to have something in black and red, not pink.

I actually like the wide range of colors for women's running shoes. My running shoe of choice only comes in one (fairly tame) color scheme in my size and width, though, so I never actually get a selection.

The bright colors are also good because they can help add reflective/eye catching elements to your gear, which is importance of safety.

(Janet - I wear Brooks Ghosts, too. Love 'em. I'm on my third pair....)

I have gladly joined the bright shoe club. A couple of years ago I ended up with neon yellow (but quite plain) and LOVED them so much. I tried to duplicate them last year but couldn't find my size so settled for bright pink. I'll go back to neon yellow in a hot second if I can get my hands on them. I find them so energizing! (I know it's in my head - but it works)

I've lamented about color options many times to my husband, who also gets fitted (but he always seems to have better options). I've been lucky - I can't run anymore, but do still need them for walking + other activities - the kind that fit me best (Brooks Glycerin) come in a bright light blue that isn't so bad. although I'm due for another pair + fitting - I'm a little nervous about what my options might be!

I just checked Zappos for the latest colors of my favorite running shoes Aascics Nimbus (17). I was surprised by the variable ratings based on the color because it's the same shoe right?!: neon green with black 5 stars; white with pink and purple 3 stars; white with blue and gray 5stars; black with neon green and purple 3 stars............ Why don't they group them all together and group the ratings too? It's confusing? I'm certain the ratings aren't about the color.

In any case there are some tamer versions in both white and black for the less bold minded runner or athlete.

Lisa, I have no problem with the fact that crazy neon runners exist. It's good they do, since some of us like them. I actually kind of like neon, if it's for athletic gear and it's all one colour. My issues are that (a) there are no OTHER options but really, really loud shoes; (b) the ladies' shoes come in "lady" neon colours only (it's hard to find neon yellow in women's) and (c) most of them are not just bright, but they have many colours, which are often in very silly patterns! If you like them, that's great, but if you don't, it's tough noogies. Rainbow shoes is what you get. So, I could buy a crazy pair and wear them ironically, I guess, but I don't care how many people compliment me on my runners -- if I don't like them, I don't like them!

Actually the ones I settled for -- which, yes, are hot pink -- were actually made better by swapping out the mint green laces for neon pink ones. Somehow I like them better when the ENTIRE shoe is pink! If I'm going to do pink, I'm going to do pink. Ahaha.

Peri -- maybe I WILL mail this to all the major shoe companies. Except what are we going to do? They have us. If you need runners, you'll buy what's on offer!

LOL. I know what you mean. I keep buying multiple pairs of the same old running shoes (I wear them out quickly because I supinate so badly) when they're on sale. Brooks Ghost (I was buying the 5 or 6, but now there's a 7 out too…). They're fairly simple, and ya know, if it ain't broke...

I don't want them to stand out. And you know what...many other women I know wear them this way too. Why do shoe companies think we want crazy shoes???

Now I am cracking up over your My Little Pony image! I'd love to take this thread and mail it to all major shoe companies!

I buy my running shoes from roadrunnersports.com or zappos. If you find new balance (same 990 series in gray for womens or a white gray model, they used to have a black with just a gray N - hey I did the marathon in those) or nike comfortable there are plainer black or gray models. Also asics has a plain black on black running shoe. Most of the usual brands have a least offensive color choice but it may not come in the shoe that you want. I have plain white brooks with silver and gray but they don't seem to make that anymore. If you have a favorite brand you might want to check out the offerings online for color choices. But I agree most are hideous.

Drives me flippin' insane, especially with trail shoes which appear to only be made in mud enhancing shades of neon.

I saw that cartoon and laughed yesterday, too.

Saucony is the best brand for me, and I've tried others when I wanted crazy colors, and keep coming back to the plainer dark shoes from Saucony due to fit.

Ha! I love this ! I am the happy wearer of not just one but TWO pair of crazy Asics runners in the wildest combos possible. If you had told me just a year ago that I'd be wearing those crazy colours and patterns I would have declared you crazy, but I love them now! I have a yellow/neon combo pair, and a black/pale blue/crazy neon pair . Now I do come by the craziness honestly - the Asics Gel is the runner I have worn for years now, and do need to replace them every 6 months. The craziness looks good with plain black or solid colour workout gear and I get comments and compliments on them all the time. Get yourself some!

I'm talking about real running shoes for actual running, not the cute fashion sneakers that are popular at the moment.

I had to buy new runners last week. I haven't had a new pair in at least six years. I went to several stores that specialize in running gear, as well as generalist stores like Sportchek, and in all of them, I was faced with a wall of HIDEOUS CLOWN SHOES in eyewatering patterns and chaotic combinations of "lady" colours, many of which were so vivid they could probably be seen from space.

I'm not all that fussed about the appearance of my running shoes -- they are gear, after all -- but come on. It's like all the designers used to work for Hasbro making My Little Pony toys. They must know that we have no choice -- if you need runners, you need runners. I looked at the wall of men's shoes, and while there were a few neon choices, there were also lots of plain white and subtle blue options. In the end, I settled on a hot pink pair that aren't too bad -- at least they're mostly all the same colour, and no weird shapes or glitter. And they feel like clouds on my feet. :-)

I saw this cartoon yesterday and actually laughed out loud. The illustrator nailed it!
