Funny timing on your post, I have some old looong Gap straights that I pulled out thinking I would hack with a stepped hem. They are a light wash with no distressing. When I tried them on I hesitated and they are still sitting in my closet waiting for me to do something. I feel I might have enough crops, which I like and wear all the time, so I didn't hack. Oddly, these look fresh to my eye, maybe I just have good fit goggles on because they make my short legs look longer. I'm really confused about jeans at the moment. I would like to wear them as is, no cuff. I think your cool style can pull them off but I don't know about me. Would love to see yours.

I suspect they'll be more the ticket when the weather gets cold and because jeans are a basic, the accompanying pieces will carry the weight of making the outfit au courant. Having said all this...what about your cold shoulder top for early fall? Standout booties?

It's funny you should post this question, because I just did a quick denim inventory the other day and, at the very bottom of the stack, were my straight-leg, dark denim, plain jane jeans. They fit great, make my bum look nice and my legs look long (er, well, longer), and yet...they were at the very bottom of the stack. Unworn. Forgotten. Lol.

Anyway, here's my question: how many pairs of jeans do you have? I don't think you can wear them full length right now and look current (although it will look classic, which can be a good thing too), but I wouldn't cut them if you have lots of other denim options. You could try the gigantic cuff thing to make them look more current. but if you cut them off, you'll essentially destroy a perfect pair of very flattering full-length jeans that may feel current again in a couple of seasons.

Or, perhaps you're OK with looking classic rather than trendy (although I get the feeling you wouldn't have posted this question if that weren't the case).

Anyway, if it helps you at all -- I'm not cutting mine, and you know how scissor-happy I am. I've got like five pairs of raw hem jeans at the moment. I have plenty of other jeans, so I can't see the point in permanently altering these ones. Who knows -- maybe I'll actually want full length straight legs in a year or two.

Last year I wore my Levis 501s rolled down with the boots pictured below. Pretty sure I don't count as "fashion forward", and it's a bit of a "Western" look ... but remember I live in Texas and that is never wrong here. :) So, for what it's worth.

Haven't tried the look this year so I'm not sure whether I'll love it just as much or not -- it's still hot here, and I have been wearing my 501s cuffed above the ankles all summer. But, for what it's worth ... I also have shapely calves, and "skinny straight" jeans often look like just plain skinny jeans on me. The 501s are more of a boyfriend fit so they do look like straight legs on me.

I have one pair of straight leg jeans and they are one of my favourite pairs of jeans. I do wear them with a big cuff over ankle boots but I still like to wear them full length (uncuffed) sometimes with boots in winter (they come to just below my ankle uncuffed). They have a frayed hem. Could you trim yours to achieve a frayed hem? It might make them feel more "now" for you. I am not going to crop mine. I like the versatility.

A lot of food for thought here for me on this topic. I love having a variety of silhouettes for jeans. I would hate to think that the classic straight leg doesn't work anymore...I think I am going to be exploring playing with the big cuff ideas , as no way I want to cut them or tuck into boots.

My question is Will the big cuff look work with white or colored jeans as well... My favorite brown jeans have zippers down the sides and I don't think they will roll well at all.... Think when I return from my cruise I am going to be playing with straight leg jeans and footwear options.

Looking forward to seeing if others post pictures to glean ideas from..

I just had a wee look online for straight leg looks and a lot of them were worn cuffed, especially the more fashion foward looks.

This winter I wore three types of jeans
- skinny, mostly full length (mine are fairly fitting so I wore them with longer tops in the most part)
- boyfriend, although these come into their own more in spring as I prefer them with ankle showing rather than boots on me
- straight leg, mostly cuffed, either with ankle boots or sneakers. I did wear them once or twice in the evening uncuffed with a high heeled sandal and a silky top. This is my most flattering way to wear jeans but not practical for my lifestyle.

What I am starting to think is that there will soon be a swing towards full length pants again and none of us will have any LOL.

Ummila - I used to think wide leg pants were one of my best looks but I don't feel that way now. I do love the Kate Hepburn slouchy trouser look but it is hard to translate to reality.

I have a pair of AG and a pair of Citizens I've been hanging on to, trying to decide whether to consign. Straight leg, full length, absolutely nothing wrong with them, but they don't feel current enough.

I've been on crop flares and skinnies lately, when I'm not still in shorts. It seems to me that skinnies are nearing the end of their moment, but I am still enjoying them too.

I am really trying to wrap my mind around truly wider leg looks, but am just not wild about how they look on me especially if a heel isn't involved, because I just feel so short.

I agree with those who suggest keeping the jeans long. We've had just a touch of fall weather in the past week and I'm just not that interested in cropped pants any longer. To be honest I'm not super-enamored of cropped pants on me in general, but in warmer weather they definitely have a place in my wardrobe.

I have an idea for styling straight leg jeans that I'm going to try when my shoe order arrives. I've shown the pieces in finds below. No cuffing, at least not for this older pair of jeans that is just the right length. This might be a bit too preppy for you Janet, although I'm hoping the shoes push the outfit a bit more on the modern direction. The finds are a few of the loafers I ordered ( got the suede pointy toe tassel ones in black but might try the burgundy too) plus a new sweater I just bought, over my old classic white shirt and straight leg jeans. I'd not tuck the shirt so it's hemline would show...

I'll show some pics once the shoes all arrive. I also need to look for a different sweater to wear in fall...the one I just bought will be too warm for a while. I'll look in my closet first

I have the same leg on some light wash sevens. I loved them because they were so long initially, but find when I wear them, I cuff them. I love the large cuffs shown in the find, but somehow it never feels right irl. I do like straits with a boot that fits sleekly at the ankle for cold weather, rolled or left long.
Of course they look grand with a heel, but that's not my life anymore.

I actually love these jeans worn long. Crops are everywhere so next year long will be fresh again- the industry will need to sell more pants. I think these would look great with a heeled boot and dark florals and jewelry.

I like crops and cuffs too- but classic flattering well fitting jeans always look good.

It looks like many of you feel the same way I do about these jeans! And even with the challenges styling them, I considered getting another pair -- Lucky was having a good sale on a cut that is very flattering on me. I wonder if I might reach for them more than skinnies for the upcoming season, I don't know why. Maybe just feeling like skinnies have become such a default, I want to do something different.

I'm not sure I want to hack these jeans. They're still so new-looking, even though I've had them for a couple of years. I think I'd like to try to wear them at their existing length. They are the COH Elson jeans. ETA the Find below.

Yeah, I used to wear them with oxfords too but they would hit the vamp and scrunch up a little, which was fine back then when we were all about the scrunching but feels weird now.

Diana, I agree with you about the pantaloon effect, and I am not sure that would be for me anyway -- it's not my favorite look. I'm also with you on the footwear issue with straight legs. I don't wear ballet flats or pumps. I used to totally default to wearing straight leg jeans with oxfords, but I feel like that might read a little too conservative/preppy for me now. Maybe it would work, depending on what I'm wearing on the top half.

IMO the pantaloon effect looks better with BF jeans or just baggier legs, at least on my not-super skinny calves. But I always had issues with it feeling kind of lumpy and shifting around.

I think long (but not scrunched) straight legs can be a really classic look but I disagree that it works with a lot of footwear. I think it works best with a sleek, heeled shoe or a low-vamp flat (like a ballerina), both of which I don't really ever wear. They don't fall right over chunkier shoes the way a bootcut or flare would, and get caught up and look scrunchy/bunchy.

I'm following with interest , too.
I am a slow adopter, or at least longer - time- tolerator, so if a style works for me fit- flattery- wise, I'm am less keen on giving it up if the new version is trendy but less practical or flattering.

What tulle said --For me, a kind of long
slim- straight Jean works with a lot of footwear and seasons.
I'm intersted in how folks manage the seasonal colder temps coming ( in N hemisphere). It's hard for me to target " fall jeans " only, since I don't wear jeans every day.
One option might be to try rolling with socks peeking over booties or Oxfords- though worried that that reads too twee. Or, I don't have any tall boots or mid- calf chunkier boots so might be intersted in tucking in, though sometimes I get too much pantaloon- Stormtrooper effect.
Hmmm-

I'm going to play devil's advocate, because when I tried on MY pair of long, dark-wash straight-leg jeans yesterday, I soon realized--after trying every sort of rolling, cuffing, & otherwise shortening--that these jeans are far more useful to me worn quite long over heeled black boots. They functioned like bootcuts, but narrower, elongating my legs and balancing a jacket. I have plenty of cropped & rolled jeans, and I like them, but these long dark ones give me an option that feels a bit dressier.

Oh, I love this question. I wasn't sure that the large single-fold cuff was still current (I wore my raw denim that way) so am very glad to hear that's not passé.

I'm now tempted by the staggered hem; it would showcase a pair of boots that aren't trendy but are very me. Had thought I'd bypass this trend bc my ankles are alluring only to a very select audience. Thanks for the explanations!

I echo what Tanya and Diana said. It's all about the alluring ankle so you're either hacking and cuffing to showcase footwear, skin or quirky socks.

That said, have you tried tucking them into mid-calf boots for a pantaloon effect?

I agree with Tanya. The ones I've seen lately are all either cropped or worn w/a big cuff. Definitely no full length or scrunched bottoms.

I just had my black slim straights turned into ankle crops and am looking forward to wearing them. They had a bit of scrunch before which was definitely feeling a bit old.
