I have a disclosure to make first : I own stock in Timberland Shoe company. It has done mediocre. One of the reasons I stick with it is that is a sustainable and highly philanthropic, and ethical company.

Teva is a really great too. A Company called simpleshoes.com is completely sustainable and eco-friendly.

I have to give a plug to my favorite online shoe store, Ped Shoes (http://www.pedshoes.com), because one thing that is VERY important to the owner, Dayna Grubb, is that every line she carries is ethically produced. If a company shifts its manufacturing to China, she usually drops them unless they can prove they are still using environmentally and socially sound practices. Although Ped carries leather shoes, they primarily use vegetable-dyed leathers. Trippen, which is out of Germany, is especially respected for their sustainable approach. Coclico and Cydwoq are also good companies from what I can tell. I have often called Ped to ask about their products from this angle (because it really matters to me), and they--usually it's Dayna who answers the phone--have always been gracious about giving me the straight dope.

As Stringy suggested, second hand clothing seems to be one of the easiest ways to help, especially if you buy from stores that exist to benefit a worthy group. I try to do as much shopping as I can in this way and also help support a woman who is supporting her familiy when I take some of these items to be tailored.
There will still be problems with this but it's easier than trying to keep up with ethics of clothing companies. It is amazing what you can find in excellent condition if willing to look.

Brianna, thanks for the shoutout and it's good to see you here I have pondered this quite a bit so I can make my best recommendation to you.

The truth is that what you said about AA is true about all mainstream apparel companies. We live in a capitalist, corporate-based society and unfortunately that leads to a lot of exploitation--of people, animals, and the environment alike. If you wanted to avoid all of that, you would have to avoid everything aside from some obscure indie designers, used clothing, and Etsy sellers, and even that might not completely avoid these issues. Somewhere along the production line, it is highly likely that there were questionable practices. An Etsy seller could be using a fabric created by children in India, for example. Vegan clothing companies use a lot of PVC, which is not environmentally friendly (however, I feel obligated to point out that leather tanning is no better).

So that said, I think one must choose his or her battles. My ethical issue is mainly with animals. Recently, however, I have started considering wearing USED leather because it is kinder to the environment by repurposing something rather than buying something new, and doing so doesn't fund any exploitative practices. But I do feel like a bit of a hypocrite because I know I can't even touch real fur, let alone wear it, regardless of whether or not it is used...hence "considering." I also wear leather shoes, and that is a battle I have just had to force myself to ignore. I continue to research vegan brands and I'm sure one day the technology an engineering will exist to create a manmade material that breathes and stretches, but meanwhile despite my efforts, I haven't found anything that truly goes the distance. Hopefully one day my fussy feet can be pacified without compromising my ideals. I guess what I am saying is that I do my very best, but I still try to be reasonable and rational. I'm not a bleeding heart and never will be because even if I do everything I can, it still won't be enough. It must be a collective effort. I think if everyone in the world chose *a* battle--any battle--we would see a vast improvement in everything from animal welfare to quality of life to the environment. If everyone made some small effort, even if they aren't perfect, it would truly add up.

Sooo...now that I have preached all that...about shopping: As I said, all major retailers will engage in some seedy practices. Sweatshop labor is almost guaranteed these days, unfortunately, because most of these garments are cheaply produced in countries without proper labor laws. Rather than worrying about where to shop, or boycotting certain stores or brands, I would be more inclined to support organizations that work to create better conditions for these workers. With the environment, there are plenty of brands out there that claim to be sustainable or eco-friendly, or that have a sustainable/eco-friendly range. This is not my area of expertise as I usually find these brands and ranges too expensive for me, but I'm sure others will chime in.

Ethical shoes are *hard* to find. Simple Shoes does some nice casual sneakers, etc. And apparently Stella McCartney has a line of vegan shoes that are dressier, although I've never seen them in stores here in Australia.

Vintage and secondhand is another good option for sustainable items, since you're saving them from landfill and extending their useful life.

Back on the celebrity track, Emma Watson (Hermione from Harry Potter) has a line of organic/fair trade clothes at http://www.peopletree.co.uk/category/emma-watson/ The basic tees there are quite nice.

Lululemon used to have an offshoot line called oqoqo that was all sustainable/organic but it went under.

American Apparel uses ethical practices in some regards, but is pretty darn questionable in others...

I'm thinking ahead to spring and I realize I will need to fill in a number of wardrobe gaps (sandals, slip-on shoes of some sort, short-sleeved and sleeve-less tops, etc.). I would really, really, really like to choose clothes from companies that are actively ethical and/or sustainable in their practices--and if and when that's not possible, I'd like to at least avoid brands that are actively UNethical or UNsustainable (think the fashion equivalent of Nestle).

I know some of you (Maya!) try to keep your personal ethics and morals in mind when making fashion choices, and I'd really appreciate your help in creating a list of go-to sources, both online and brick & mortar. I'm also interested in websites that might give insight into the practices various brands use in their employment, sourcing, manufacturing, etc. Often ethical and sustainable companies make clothes are not particularly fashionable, but surely there are some places that manage to be both ethical and stylish? I do a lot of thrift and consignment shopping, but sometimes I need or want to buy new!

Maybe we can also help each other do a little bit of research into companies whose products we like but whose business practices we don't know much about. I personally am interested in but ignorant about Doc Martens, H&M, Bensimon, Club Monaco, the Gap/BR/ON empire, and Clarks, to start us off.
