Seems like we're moving toward a time when there's no distinction between leggings, jeggings and skinnies.

Today I saw several young women in my office building wearing cropped super skinnies with flats (usually it's with knee high boots but the weather is super nice right now) and tees that ended at the hips or above. I had to do a double take to make sure I wasn't seeing the same people! I, on the other hand, was slouching around in my man-inspired trousers

Yesterday in Loft I tried on straight legs and skinnies. Wound up with curvy fit skinnies that fit well over my fairly chunky thighs and calves. They had curvy fit straights, but not in my size.

This probably doesn't help the OP (no Loft stores in Canada, correct?), but might be useful to someone else...

Isn't kvetching a fabulous word.

We seriously need to go back to the way skinnies were made 5 years ago. This too tight and too short sausage silhouette is not on.

I noticed the prevalence of very dark washes too. And even though dark denim is usually my preference, it's nice to have some variety of choice.

I was in Nordstrom last night looking for that jacket Angie posted for me, and I looked at a pair of Vince skinnies and just laughed. I swear the ankle was barely big enough for me to fit my hand into, and my hands are SKINNY!

It's OK, I did find one pair of pants I really like. They are slim on the calf but not stupidly tight. And I did want a pair of "normal blue" skinnies (as opposed to dark indigo, grey, black etc). But I'm still on the hunt for the elusive straight legs! (Why buy one pair of jeans when you can buy two? Can you really ever have too many jeans?) ;-)

I am laughing in disbelief at "The Stocking." Really? They think this is what women want? I'm beginning to think that only politicians are more divorced from the reality of how people live than fashion designers.

I haven't gone shopping for skinnies for some time, but this post makes me want to! I have only 11.5" calves, so this should be my dream. :^) But I do have to wonder what clothing manufacturers are thinking...do they really think they're going to sell all these skinnies if people can't fit into them?

Don't get me wrong, I do love the skinny jeans I own. I prefer them with boots, and they definitely feel a little more dressed up when the occassion calls for it but jeans are still appropriate.
But I've always loved bootcut jeans. They just have a "cool vibe", and look cool with heels, my favorite DC skate sneakers, flats, etc. And I think they feel so much better in warmer temperatures. I am a small girl (5'2", 123 lbs) so finding skinnies is sometimes hard. They are always too long (which I'll admit, I prefer!) and usually fit well through the legs but are almost always too big in the waist.
I also feel like sometimes skinnies are maybe "too fussy"-I just feel like I'm trying too hard when I wear them with heels or strappy flat sandals in the spring and summer. I get compliments when I do try it, but I don't know, maybe I just like that 'Oh I Just Threw This Together But Look Cool Boho and Fresh' feeling.

It's kind of nice to know that I have company here. Jeans have always been an easy-to-fit item for me, but not any more. With no hips or butt, and an *ahem*--shall we say, "athletic" calf--every skinny I can pull over the bottom part of my leg fits like an enormously baggy jodhpur on me. Seriously, I could carry enough for a month-long trip to Europe in the sides and rear of any jean that stretches enough to fit over my size 10 foot and well-developed calf muscle. Even supposed straight-legged jeans are posing problems these days.

I ordered a pair of J Brand jeans just before Christmas. They were tight all over and I could hardly bend my knees. Then I tried one size up. There were much better except the waist, which was so loose I was afraid they would fall down without a belt. This is really strange since I have almost no waist. I really need jeans and don't know what to do. Just keep trying, I guess.

I don't have the tight calf or ankle problem, mine is the tight thigh issue.

The tight skinny jean thing seems to be unstoppable. I was just reading an interview with the creator of J Brand and his latest thing is an even more fitted jean than the Photo Ready. It's called The Stocking. Personally what I want now is a higher-waisted, slimmed down bf -- really a straight legged jean that isn't baggy but not tight either. I can achieve this with a pair of sized up Levi's skinnies (high waisted) or a pair of sized down boyfriends.

Elizabeth, I hear your song and join the chorus. Angie also had a thread earlier this year -- in general, people are needing to size up in jeans, especially premium brands but even GAP has caused some problems with sizing changes. And the legs seem more calf-sucking than ever. What used to be a jegging, it seems, is now what they call a skinny. (Heaven only knows what a jegging is, these days!)

I also bought Citizens of Humanity skinnies. I did some careful research -- Nordstrom said the opening was 12" on this style, and that was enough to make them calf touching but not sucking on me, given that I also SIZED UP a size. I could even have sized up two, but since they'd only had the one size in stock at the time, I didn't have a choice. They would not have fit me in my regular size.

The thing is, Mo, I've got pretty small legs. Not matchsticks, but I'm definitely on the small side. If I can't get the pants on, there's a lot of other women who can't, either!

Lucky for you, though! And I've seen your legs. They're not matchsticks either -- you're very shapely.

Mo that's what I thought too but it is pretty extreme - I need to fit socks in there somehow!

Just goes to show one person's struggle is another's goldmine. I love it! All my skinnies have always fit more like straight legs. Makes sense with my 7.5" ankles I guess. I'm enjoying finally having the feel of denim touching my leg and not flapping around, never mind trying to neatly get that extra material into boots.
perhaps after this season, they'll move back to wider lower legs?

I tried on a pair and nearly fell over in the dressing room trying to get them over my feet! It is seriously weird since usually I have the opposite problem. No happy medium!

Janet started a thread the other day (http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....rant-ahead) about jeans -- specifically the extreme skinniness of the current skinny jeans offerings -- and since I just went jeans shopping at our "nice" department store (Holt Renfrew) last weekend, I thought I'd add to topic.

My findings: WTF IS GOING ON WITH CALF CIRCUMFERENCE. I tried on pretty much every skinny jean in the store (no straight legs available; Angie wasn't kidding) and most of them, even if they fit in the thigh, were so tight in the calf that they were nearly painful. And the hole where your foot comes out? My feet could barely pass through. And I have small feet.

Keep in mind that this is one of the nicest department stores in Vancouver, so their jeans selection should include the higher quality brands.

I did find a pair I liked (Citizens of Humanity skinnies) but I sized up so they would have a bit of ease in the waist and thigh, and didn't cut off the circulation in my calves. But still, one pair of jeans out of a whole massive store? Normally I can find six pairs of jeans that fit great and that I like. Rag and Bone, which I had success with last year, were so unbelievably tight that I could barely get them on in a size that's two up from my usual.

I don't know what I'm expecting people to say here…just commiserate, I guess, or else tell me where I can find a nice, normal pair of straight leg jeans?
