Hmmm, how did I not comment on this thread? I totally understand your attraction without being able to say what exactly make this look so, well, cool. Totally different and unexpected and yet pleasing to the eyes - like a work of art. I could live without the purple lips though.

I think there is 80s & there is 80s. A lot of Yamamoto is timeless imo. I used to live in a city (Melbourne) where a lot of women wear this look - it's almost an anti-fashion thing especially for older women who aren't classic dressers - I love it but it's too much black for me.

Una, no one where I live wears this this type of look either:). Where I live is pretty conservative. I see some of these elements in some of the street fashion pictures I see on line and I am personally attracted to Japanese design but I think I prefer say one avant garde garment mixed with something more classic as a whole outfit can look a little contrived (to me). We are the same age, and I think you look more fondly upon 80's style than I do lol :).

Interesting comments, everyone! Deborah, this is new to me, and I love seeing a style on the runway that so personifies my fantasy wardrobe. Maybe it is that 80s influence? Though some of it is so out there it seems hard to date it - I've never seen anyone wearing this style, at least where I live!

KD, the samurai influence is there for sure! And very appealing. Did anyone besides me ever read those awesome Lensey Namioki samurai books as a kid?

Androgyne Dandy chic, unapologetic: oversized yet extremely structured like menswear. Contrasts play between dainty and maxi, between short and long, thin and broad. vertical lines. Appeals to the urban warrior woman as its armor-like details (broad and short topper, extra fabric in the pants pckets) remind of the Samourai.

The strongest influence I see is the 80's. I also see what I feel are many predictable elements often used in "avant garde" fashion. Unless you are tall and slim this is not particularly figure flattering. Don't get me wrong as I do appreciate and even like Yamamoto designs, but it just doesn't look fresh to my eyes. I feel I have seen it before. I don't mean express a negative but want to be honest about my emotional esponse to this particular outfit.

Una and Ariadne - maybe only the true hipsters survive the apocalypse. Beatniks. Slam poets. People who drink coffee in shops converted from bomb shelters. Oh, and Tom Waits, the original hipster; I think he's going to live forever. I don't think of homelessness, either.

Post-apocalyptic hipser! Love it. Although I wonder how many hipsters would survive the apocalypse...? Are there indie coffee shops in the post-apocalyptic world? ;)

It's really fun reading everyone's thoughts on this outfit. Yamamoto is one of the designers who, to me, best epitomizes fashion as capital-A Art. Dries Van Noten (who doesn't even do haute couture) is another. I love this quote from Wikipedia about Yamamoto: "probably the only designer you could name who has 60-year-olds who think he's incredible and 17-year-olds who think he's way cool."

Following my deer-trail thought process, I was just reading about Dries Van Noten and his Wikipedia entry describes him as eccentric and cerebral. Along with avant-garde, I think "eccentric and cerebral" (in a good way--I love eccentric cerebral types) is what would come to mind if I saw someone wearing this outfit.

Ooh, I agree "homeless chic" sounds so offensive, nor do I find this to be that style. I think of it as my favorite descriptor, "post-apocalyptic hipster" - which is what ultimately led me to the idea of UWP. It's a bit of Allsaints but much more Asian in influence. I don't aspire to hipsterness, but I see that in some of what I like.

All of this designer's stuff seems JUST. SO. COOL.

Rae, for "free" association thinking, you have nailed a lot of it. Architectural but malleable (not even soft), was my first impression. Angular, which makes for androgyny.

They don't say Clean or Minimal to me either. Geometric, futuristic, graphic, substantial and textured fabrics (menswear) so not really ethereal in construction, although perhaps in concept.

Practical, durable, bold, confident - seems to me a person who is already totally comfortable in her own SKIN, would just wear these as if part of her totality.

Freewrite time!

What these ARE to me:
Avante garde. Ethereal. Surreal - unexpected draping and proportions sort of like a Dali painting. Somewhat architectural. Textural. Slouchy. Distressed/Deconstructed, but in a crafted/purposeful/mad scientist way. Darkly whimsical, a la Tim Burton. Menswear inspired. SURREAL is hitting home again... these seem to be twisted classics, similar to the way a surrealist painter twists the photorealistic image into something dreamlike.

What these are NOT to me:
Minimal (too many layers and details to be minimal IMO). Rugged. Natural (for example, the distressing on the tuxedo top is limited only to the bib - if it were distressed in a way to look natural, the wear pattern would be different). Severe. Girlie. Modern. Futuristic. Bright. Optimistic.

I LOVE Yohji Yamamoto. In my fantasy lifestyle I'd wear his clothes all of the time--on my tall, androgynous fantasy body, of course. There's a documentary about him floating around somewhere that I keep meaning to watch.

As to how he pulls it off? Fierce independence, prioritizing the textures and shapes and elements of the garments themselves over conventional figure flattery (I'd argue this outfit does have an element of figure flattery to it, because the outfit's cleanest, narrowest point is still the true waist), and heavy dose of pure genius?

I wouldn't call this outfit clean-lined or minimal. I've heard this type of style described as "homeless chic," but I strongly dislike that term.

One thing I always wonder is if I'd react the same way to outfits like this if I saw them on someone walking down the street as I do when I see them in catwalk or pricey online boutique photos. Would it still scream "genius"? I don't know. I don't see many people walking around in Yamamoto!

There's a blogger I've followed for years who wears, or a least used to wear stuff like this and looks amazing in it... she doesn't post photos or outfits anymore, though, just illustrations. http://upanddowntown.blogspot.com/

Huh, I guess mulberry lipstick is trending! :)

At first glance I saw a play in proportions -- shrunken jacket, oversized pants. Maybe a mix of fabrics -- woven, knits. And a neutral palette to let color take a back seat to the cut of the clothes.

Does it have clean lines? Is it minimal? Would it be the same without the belt? Trying to advance my style skills here!
