Love these posts. Based on your musing here, my first guess would be something like urban warrior creative. It seems to me any one of these personae wouldn't feel like you on their own. The urban & warrior would give you the streamlined & hard-edge components of your look e.g. skinnies & studs; then the creative would give you everything else - colour, or fabrication or detail when & how you wanted it. I think I would ask myself what pieces would I need to "ground" my look? What pieces make up my favourite outfits (or outfits I see on others that I love)?

Rae, that makes sense. I'm an hourglass, so nipped waists love me and I'll probably try to work those in wherever possible. Brights (in moderation) and luxurious fabrics also sound great. Sadly, heels hate me!

Rachylou, I think I may end up jettisoning a lot of the classic stuff (stripes are the element that's Most Likely to Survive). I think it may mostly be the trappings of my efforts to not stand out. I'd rather have a navy military jacket than a navy peacoat, for example, and I've never in my life worn camel. Pearls feel totally wrong on me and DH hates collared shirts on me (it's a mystery).

I have some silver DMs from a few years ago (same ones as Tanya) that I didn't wear much this year, but with all the silver/sci-fi stuff on the runways this year, I'm itching to break them out again.

MsKatieKat, it's good to know I'm not alone in some of those lingering insecurities! Hopefully with some effort I can shed the ones that still remain. If I can find the boots or a facsimile thereof in Canada I'm definitely going to try them out.

Thanks for the links, Suz, it will be fun to explore those.

Here's a crazy outfit that I would totally wear to the right event (book launch, perhaps?). It would really be pushing me out of my comfort zone but I love the silk, the floral, the RATE-ness of the destroyed hem, the studded flats, the black skinnies... *swoon* For all I know it'd look terrible on me IRL but I certainly love the idea of it. I'm having fun just poking around online and collecting inspirational images.

For me, the "princess" element comes through in luxurious fabrics and feminine touches like a nipped waist, heels, pretty brights, and long hair. These days I might be skewing more towards Urban Warrior Tomby, but I'm not quite ready to kick the princess out of the mix yet. I'm excited to have a peek at your Polyvores!

Kibbe was a fashion guru guy in the 80s who came up with a system of classification. It's complicated and a bit difficult to understand, and some of what he says quite dated. There is a quiz you can take to find out what category you belong to, and then some advice. http://colorconnection.yuku.co.....Fp0O0IZd38

Here's a link with some google docs (I haven't even looked at this link myself, but it looks as if they try to explain visually some of his less easy to interpret descriptions.) http://seasonalcolor.yuku.com/.....FpzjUIZd38

@Ariadne - I know how you feel. Sometimes a lot of women who have been teased as kids dress so that they don't draw attention. When we were kids, it was so important to blend in! I've had a similar experience, and this definitely influenced my choices. I was teased mercilessly for being scrawny and "ugly" so I made some concerted effort to actually look more "trendy" yet not reflective of my personal style.

As for wearing your warrior boots - just go do it Who knows? What if your mommy friends actually do applaud you and you serve as an inspiration? Just because you live a certain lifestyle or you are at a certain stage in your life, it doesn't mean you can't get creative with the way you dress

I think if you did artsy eclectic prints, peacoat, and DMs, you'd get a artsy eclectic/UWP/preppy thing going on.

I'll have to think about how you could get an artsy eclectic/UWP/grace-kelly-classic thing going on. Camel shift dress over artsy print blouse with DMs?

I'm not sure where you could go dressed like this, admittedly. I mean, besides the record shop.

ETA: Yipes! Apparently I'm in the mood for writing epics. Thanks for bearing with me.

Una--that Suzy Chin dress is pretty spectacular! It wouldn't work on my body or lifestyle, but the ink blot print (not so much the magenta striped belt thingy down at the hips) is one I'd love to wear. It minus the belt thingy plus booties is something I'd absolutely wear to the right event.

goldenpig--You're sweet! Yes, the outfits are very different from Rae's and Una's, aren't they? I think an arty/tough/streamlined trifecta is what I might be craving, with emphasis falling more heavily on one or two of those three elements depending on my mood, the weather, and whatever other factors are in play that day.

Gaylene, that Edun collection is beautiful. I wouldn't/couldn't wear any of the individual items, but the prints and, as yuo said, the interplay of hard and soft, urban and earthy is very appealing.

Jayne, what a good idea. I'm going to do that (make outfits using things I own). I'm OK with doing totally aspirational outfits as well to help me develop my eye, though, becausethe hope is I'll be able to put some of those items into my closet when I finish losing weight and am ready to do more buying. I'm pretty sure a moto jacket, a blazer and some studded booties and shoes will be the main things I buy for now.

MsKatieKat, thanks for the encouragement! I've spent most of my life afraid of dressing the way I really want to, due to years of painful experiences of being teased mercilessly in school. As a result I've always dressed in a way that's designed not to attract attention--and felt dull and blah as a result. Like, I'm already worried about what the reaction of my mommy friends would be if I wore those studded booties to the playground. WHY? It's really time for me to get over that.

Diana-- those second two outfits you posted are on the right track--similar but not quite the same as what I have in mind. Thanks for sharing! I've looked at Audi's blog in the past and just checked it out again. I like maybe a quarter of her outfits and would wear maybe 10% of them. The rest of the time her style is a little too "much" for me. Looking through it is a good exercise in figuring out what I do and don't like, though, because some of the looks are so close to being what I want. In general I prefer fewer and/or sleeker and/or simpler elements that get most of their punch from cut and color. If doing patterns I'd do one, max two, if one of the patterns was stripes or dots. I don't like things like lace or beading or ruffles at all.

Ramya, if you come up with a good name, let me know. I want to copy them too! LOL. I just need the money and the ability to get the pieces in Canada.

Rae, good point about more descriptors equalling less narrow. However, right now I really have no parameters at all and my closet reflects that, so even ten descriptors is better than "Hey, I like that in some theoretical way that may have nothing at all to do with me and everything to do with what my neighbor/a JCrew catalogue model/an imaginary person in my head/an Anthropologie salesclerk with the opposite body type to me/a character in a book/or whomever was wearing"--I think.

Vix, I'm definitely open to using Arty + Studded + Overlap as three distinct but equally workable and appealing style personas. Everything you wrote was really helpful and I think it could work for me. I was just looking at that thread of yours yesterday, in fact. I like your description--"strong color and abstract floral pieces with fairly streamlined neutrals." Add in some tough elements like buckles, zippers, studs and leather, and a touch of boho/"ethnic" influence and that might be pretty much it!

Suz, I thought about the boho angle and it's something I continue to feel drawn to, experiement with, and never quite succeed at or feel good in unless it's in small doses. I think my curvy size 10-ish body and short choppy hair just don't work with full-on boho. I feel out of sorts and sloppy. But yesterday I wore a loose Battenburg lace tank from Free People, RATE skinnies, and Dansko cognac wedge sandals and felt good (forgot to take a pic so no clue if I actually *looked* good!). It was right at the very edge of my boho comfort zone. The skinny jeans streamlined it enough to make it feel "me", and the accessories were minimal (bangles). I enjoy looks like that once every week or two, mosty in the summer. Definitely not an everyday style for me, though. Boho elements? Yes, I can definitely see that. And a big YES to everything else you wrote! I'm an hourglass and need to work with that.

What is Kibbe?

Una, I'll have to stalk more of Diana's pics. I've admired Greenglove for years! She has such a wonderful style that suits her perfectly.

I love that dress. I should have ordered it with my Nordstrom's stuff. But I fear it might be impractical and not get enough wear in my climate. Too summery.

You know...some people might be tempted to say "boho" for the drape, scarves, bangles, organic shapes. Just to add another possible moniker! JUST what you need!

Last year when I was going through this whole process (the first time) I came up with the name "Artistic Professional" to describe what I was aiming for.

But after a while, that didn't seem right. So I developed a rubric:

Elegant
Urban
Retro
Organic  = EURO (chic)

And lately I came up with still another:

Structured
Urban
Sophisticated
Artistic
Novel  = Susan

Note: I am not sure these rubrics have actually moved me any further ahead, and I would do better playing around on Pinterest or Polyvore - which I have finally started to do. Even though we are wordsmiths, sometimes pictures really say it better. Because, as you point out, one person's "artistic" isn't another's.

AND..as I have lately come to understand, even if one person's artistic IS another's, IT WON'T ALWAYS WORK.

Here's what I mean.

I'm a huge admirer of Diana's arty style. I just love her fun, playful outfits. To the point where lately, I went out a bought a couple of Diana influenced pieces, with draping, interesting cuts (one of them in TEAL, one of her - and my- favourite colours).

Well, you can guess what happened. Those pieces just look DUMB on me. They do nothing for my angular features and my slight frame. OOPS!

Also, I adore Una's style. But the jacket she found, shopping for me, Angie immediately (and correctly I'm sure) ruled as wrong for me (before I shelled out the money for it, thank heavens!). I KNOW she is right about it; I knew it the minute I saw it on Denise and K can shop (who also tried it, unsuccessfully). So even though I want some urban edge in my style, I need to find different pieces than Una would to produce that look.

So...after Polyvore, it's important to go back to the figure flattery ideas, and also to think about colour and cut. I think Kibbe is really interesting (if difficult to understand) on detail and the type that is best suited to different body types/ presentations. And Carol Tuttle's Dressing Your Truth is pretty interesting on line, although I disagree with a whole lot else that she says.

Hi Ariadne --

I love these types of threads and will be interested to see where you end up!

I noticed you said:

>I'm equally drawn to "artistic eclectic" (AE) looks and urban warrior princess (UWP) looks.

While I think you absolutely can find a way of combining elements from each, my question is: do you ONLY want to do that?

Do you see any value in having Arty + Studded + Overlap as 3 distinct style personas -- or do you feel that the first two will always be lacking?

I ask because in reading your descriptions and looking at the polyvores you seem really clear on how to take core items and presto-chango drive a style direction by swapping out various elements.

As someone with a couple of distinct styles but a smaller wardrobe, I really enjoy being able to switch from one style to the other(s!) -- and think your ability to visualize how to maximize your potential clothing items while changing your results pretty dramatically is such a skill!

I can do it but it takes a lot of pondering and trial/error to get me from my Minimalist Magpie to Persnickety Bohemian looks. *

Anyway -- just thought I'd throw it out there.

If you *do* want a solo Overlap style I wouldn't get hung up on needing to merge the names of your two favorites. I think Rae's point about "more names, more vague" has merit. And if you want to explore the 2 unique/1 overlap thing I would consider starting fresh with your names (even if you end up circling back!).

FWIW, one of the things that intrigues me about your polyvores and list of preferences above is the use of strong color and abstract floral pieces with fairly streamlined neutrals...makes me think of words like "urban oasis" -- especially when contrasted with the more tough/rugged urban style. And ps I'm very drawn to it!

******

* If it would help your process, the YLF thread with examples of my 3 personas and some outfits where I used the same item across all 3 styles is here:

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-like-pics

I'll come back to this thread and the other replies later today because I'm racing off to do some volunteer work, but rae, I was thinking the same thing last night while waiting to fall asleep. Urban Warrior Artist sounds about right. I don't *think* the "princess" element will be or is in play for me. How do you and others see the "princess" element coming through in your styles?

I'm going to make some more example/inspiration Polyvores today during nap time to see if I can nail this down a bit. Those taupe Vince Camuto studded booties from my other thread will feature heavily, I think.

Well, if it works for you, why not? The thing is, the more descriptors you add to your style statement, the less you're narrowing your style down - does that make sense? Maybe it's just me, but too many directions make me confused...

Hm... when you think of your style, does the "princess" influence have any special significance to you? I wonder if you might be an Urban Warrior Artist.

I totally am with you with these weird style combos. You DEFINITELY can combine these styles. That is what makes YOU a very unique person!

I realized after a long YLF hiatus and a lot of experimentations that I'm a weird combination of styles myself (50% comfy chic, 25% rock and roll, 25% bombshell) so yeah... I GET IT!

Oh I see, (looking at the polyvores)...that is a bit of a challenge. I am also trying to be a mini-una and my boho side likes paisley, color color color, and shiny pretty pieces. I think you have hit on something making these polyvore mixes as a way to visualize the outfits. You mentioned you didn't own any of these pieces, maybe trying to make some outfits using at least 1 or 2 things you do own will help you visualize what would be a first good purchase to try out the style? I assume you must have some of these pretty scarves and you need the warrior pieces? I tried to just come up with 1-2 outfits to cover weekend wearing and once I was pretty happy with those, I found I could more easily add on an extra shirt to make variations rather than try to make whole new outfits. At least I am trying, so I hope to some day be 100% sure of this style before I try to use elements at work.

Have you seen Edun's Spring/Summer 2013 collection. It popped into my mind while I was pondering the whole artistic urban warrior concept.

I have no idea what you'd call his vision, but I really like the interplay of the soft and the hard elements. I keep seeing pieces that make me think "I'd like that... and that....and that..."

Of course you can! That's the fun and creativity of style--you can synthesize various style influences and create your own unique spin on it. I love those outfits you posted--I can see the UWP elements for sure, but the outfits are very different from the Una or Rae version of UWP, which I think tends to be more on the tough/tomboy side. Whereas my style is very ladylike and even sweet and girlish (like Kate Spade), so when I try UWP it comes out a bit more on the "princess" part of the UWP equation. I think your love of color and florals and arty elements balances out the tougher elements nicely! Can't wait to see more pics of Ariadne UWP style!

Yes, definitely color! See the cobalt bag, tapestry clutch, magenta scarf, burgundy jeans and fuschia booties in the Polyvores I linked (I'm going to keep referencing those because they really are great examples of what my ideal outfits would look like). And I'm drawn to certain very particular florals--watercolor ones, mostly, or kimono-esque florals like the one on the clutch in that polyvore. Some tapestry-ish florals, too, but usually painterly ones.

Let me know what your ponderings produce!

Suz, maybe we can crack it when you're in Vancouver! We can try, at least.

LOL, Gaylene! I'm with you!

The two polyvores I made for the Casual challenge last week are really good examples. The waxed denim (which reads UWP to me) plus the draped tee and tapestry clutch (AE). Swap out the booties for the VC studded ones Una has, only in taupe, or add a moto jacket with some hardware to up the UWP element. I'd love to wear that.
http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=58441480

Again, add a moto or an avant-garde jacket, add studes or lots of buckles or zipper detailing to the boots, and it's how I'd imagine a combination of AE and UWP (although I'd also wear the outfit here as is--note, I own none of these items, but would jump on them if I could):
http://www.polyvore.com/artist.....stream_box

Maybe I should just say "artsy" instead of "artistic eclectic" (which is an Angie term). I think I'm going to do some word association exercises around "artistic' since it's a fairly abstract term and I may not be defining it in the same way as others. I know it includes things like printed scarves, bangles (engraved mixed metal, beaded, crystal... all mixed together at once, mostly directly from or inspired by other cultures), my gorgeous large silver quetzal earrings from Guatemala, assymetric tops and tees.

I could possibly drop the classic elements if I could find good replacements that didn't take the whole look OTT. I don't know if what I'm thinking of are really "classics" anyway or just simple supporting essentials. I'll probably always want stripes, though... hmm.
