Yay! Good for you for going back there. And good on Loft for being reasonable about it.

Whew...

Well, I am glad to report that I was able to return the sweater to the store where I originally bought it. I was pretty impressed since technically they did not have to take it back.

Hmm...I really think that if you washed it according to directions, and it buckled like that - you should be able to return it.

Old story - but a few years ago I was in Lane Bryant, shopping. Wearing their jeans. I mentioned to the sales clerk that they'd shunk up so much in the length after washing them only once (cold water, hung to dry), and she turned around and put me in a brand new pair on the spot. I was pretty impressed. She said, "They shouldn't do that..." and exchanged them right then and there. I'd gone in there looking for more jeans, and it was one of the few places where I could find something reasonably priced and that fit me.

I hope the other store where you bought the sweater gives you a refund or at the very least, a store credit.

Well, I tried returning this to the store closest to me but they couldn't (or wouldn't) take it. I'll have to drive to the store where I bought the sweater and see what happens there. That's why I am placing more orders with Nordstrom lately - it is so much easier when you know you can actually return defective items without a hassle.

Hi Laura,

Yes, the first thing I did was try to iron it out. I also talked to customer service about this and they said the store associates will have to decide whether this is a manufacturing defect. I'll see how it works out.

Have you tried ironing it? I know, ironing a sweater is a little weird, but with some steam you could reshape (in knitting terms, reblock) it and that might solve your problem.

I think if it is a quality issue you have a chance at getting a store credit. A sweater should not do that after washing. I see why you were attracted to it initially. What a shame it won't behave better.

Woah, what a rude SA! Maybe you can talk to someone on their customer service phone line first? They may be better trained to handle quality assurance issues than a regular SA (those in-store might be extra stressed right now due tot he holiday, too).

I think I'll try returning it and see what happens. The sweater is from the Loft, and they specifically accept returns of "unwashed, unworn" items but I always feel like clothes should be returnable if you only wash them once and they don't "behave". There was one time when I returned a pair of pants because of a hole that developed after washing, and the sales person gave me really hard time. She literally pointed her finger at me and loudly complained to the other sales assistants: "She is returning WORN pants!!!" But they ended up taking the pants back. I'll see what happens this time.

You could try washing it again and paying special attention to that wonky section when you lay it out to dry. Maybe you can get it to flatten out.

I thought I was getting pretty good at not making shopping mistakes but here I went and made a silly purchase. Can it be rescued or should I donate it (I cannot return since it has been washed)?

It's a wool sweater with a moto-like styling that does not seem to want to lie flat after I washed it. I liked it in store but now it does not seem to fit the same way (although I don't think it shrank). I tried it on yesterday, took a couple of pictures, did not like it, and tried it again today.

I am trying to decide between a donation pile or wearing it on the weekends.
