Much good advice here. And now I'm a bit curious: What did you actually wear?

Agree about a soft jacket or bolero or such. That could work.

I’m with Diana. I think a dark shrug or sequined jacket could make it work.

Angie has spoken. But I do agree with Laurel; if you can keep the shoulders and back covered with a shrug or wrap (black or burgundy) and fill in the décolletage with some bling, it could pass for evening. It has the dark floral to make it a bit trans-seasonal. It's just that our eyes are captivated by the actual beach in the photo.

I also like the dress. Too beachy and bare for cocktail though.

I think it would work if you had a dressy black jacket or bolero or something like that. And of course some jewelry and less bea by shoes. I think you can make it work!

I think it would work if you added a lightweight shrug, or cardi or a wrap. Looking at the photo, it looks like it is probably backless---with a halter top---probably not the best for "cocktail" attire. It is a very pretty dress, though---but one of your shift dresses with some bling is probably a safer choice.

I think it will help if you fill in the neckline with a necklace. Otherwise it does look quite low cut. A variety of dresses is always present at these events though don't you think? I know I can agonise about some event and then when I get there there is such a huge variety of dresses and several things I have might have been fine. My husband would be just like yours but in truth husbands can be more keen on low cut dresses than other attendees! BTW you are gorgeous! Nice to "meet" you!
I honestly think you can make this dress, or other shift dresses, work. I'm sorry though that you couldn't find one that you would have been happier in.

i think it depends in part on where you live. is it still warm where you are? also depends, i hate to say it, on how conservation the crowd will be...old money vs young money, church crowd vs hipster crowd (not that hipsters don't go to church) but it was the best i quick example i could come up with....if the crowd will be on the younger side, and its warm(ish), yes i think you could get away with it

I would try that instead. Of course I run conservative. But for fundraisers I think there’s a wide tolerance for both folks stepping out in their most glam dresses for fun, so happy to have a “ dress destination “, vs other folks who are along for a ticket or to support the cause or with friends, and maybe don’t have a just the perfect thing on hand. I think it’s important to look dressy and “ make an effort “ to respect the event, hosts, honorees , but it’s ok not to pull out all the stops or wear something that’s not in comfort zone( fashion comfort zone). Focusing “ up top” with pearl or sparkly necklace or earrings, and nice shoes ( not glam necessarily , but refined) works with a nice sheath dress, or similar concept, I think.

Yeah, I had the same feeling. Hubby was trying to convince me otherwise.

I do have various shift dresses of varying formality I could wear with fancy jewelry and shoes.

Hmm. Not sure from this photo since gives more of s bare sundress vibe. Though I understand being out of luck and time! Hi- low hiem is fine, spaghetti straps ok but the , um, bodice is very bare in more of a beachy way than “ elegant” , necklace could be added, dressy formal shoes worn, but my concern is the overall look doesn’t say “ cocktail/ fundraiser “ to me. Sorry!
What other options have you? A more normal dress with dressy accessories could fly under the radar.

I'm heading to a fundraiser tonight and the dress code is cocktail dresses for women. I ordered 3 different short cocktail dresses from Nordstrom and Macy's but none of them fit.

Would this dress pass for cocktail? Help! Starting to panic! lol
