Wouldn't it be great if it was just that easy?! Pop into the wash a size 10 and get out a perfect size 8... Thanks for snapping me out of my delusional optimistic wishful thinking.

You won't lose anything by trying but a case in point my BF's mother tumble dries his t shirts and more often than no they end up short enough for me to wear but still the same width x

I have tried this, and I DON'T recommend it. Sometimes the clothes will shrink vertically, but not horizontally, ruining the shape. Sometimes they don't shrink at all, because of the synthetic fibers, and you just end up making them look old. Sometimes there are zippers or seam tape that you never noticed before... and those remain the same size, while everything else shrinks. Anyway, the point of my story is: don't waste the time/effort. :T

I totally agree with Maya on this.

Are the clothes in shape for consignment so that you could get some money for new clothes ?

I know other people do this but I am very skeptical. It will feel nice and snug at first, but over time (as in hours), your clothes will stretch and not shrink back because the elastic will be ruined. You also run the risk of shrinking them too much. This has been my experience anyway.

However, if these clothes are unwearable anyway, you have nothing to lose.

Has anyone ever attempted to purposely shrink clothing down a size or so, say a cotton with a synthetic blend like spandex/lycra by washing the garments in hot water and/or over drying in the clothes dryer? Can this be done successfully as a one time event?

For example, machine washables with normal care instructions that call for cold water and low tumble dry, can you shrink them down in size using some heat without necessarily destroying the integrity of the fabric itself if you abuse them like this just once?

I have some casual clothes that are too big, I am thinking of using a higher water temp and drying on a higher setting to shrink them a bit. Any experiences?
