I use my phone and have barely enough lighting. But I learned from Chris to change the exposure after the fact. Now my pictures are not fantastic, but at least people can see details. Also, I crop the edges so I'm bigger in the picture. I do have a giant mirror so that helps. I don't worry about a double chin because I crop my head. I'm shy. Sorry.

These two pictures show the difference adjusting the light can make. #2 shows how to do it. Also, if the color gets distorted you can adjust it too. I had never noticed it before.

You get less distortion the further you stand from the camera (within reason). For a mirror selfie I usually try to stand about 4-6 feet away and then zoom in a little (further might even be better but space and the resolution of my old phone camera don't make that easy). I've found that holding the phone in front of my face generates the best photos and doesn't obscure the outfit. I know conventional wisdom says waist height but at close range I feel this distorts weirdly. My method does foreshorten slightly esp if you are very close to the mirror.

I prefer to take my wiw photos with my point and shoot camera if I have time although it's old and not the best quality. For those I place it on a shelf about waist/chest height and shoot across a smallish room with the self timer. I crop out all the empty space on my computer afterwards.

Also lighting is important. Find somewhere with good natural light if possible and no backlighting. I never ever use a flash.

When I'm wanting really good photos or have time on my hands, I do what Diane does.

When I am in a rush and just want a quick outfit snap I used my iphone in the mirror. It's not as good and does obscure some details, of course. But you can also crop and lighten those to improve the view, and I do so. It's really handy to do the selfie thing in dressing rooms when you are not sure about something and either want the forum's opinion or simply want to go home and consider it before buying.

Hi April. I remembered that Aida said something once about camera angles and I found this post http://youlookfab.com/welookfab/topic/wiw-0219-21 (towards the end of the thread)

Also Catherine of Not Dressed as Lamb has a section on photography

http://www.notdressedaslamb.com/p/photo-tips.html

As for myself, I use a cheap tripod (£7 off Amazon) and I set the camera at waist level. I set the tripod a way back and zoom in a little to get better proportions. I also have my camera set on flash and I always crop and tweak the brightness and colour afterwards

I am finding it remarkably difficult to do by myself, in the mirror, on my phone. I end up shooting the underside of my chin, or the phone itself blocks an important part of the outfit, or it's all too small to see any details.

I'm sure one of our members who's good at this has posted a primer -- anyone have it bookmarked?
