A long-waisted lass like our lovely Tanya has an extended region of narrowness in her torso. If you see one of Tanya's photo posts, you'll see a classic long waist.

A short-waisted (aka high-waisted) lass like myself has very little such region to speak of. There's barely any space between the bottom of my ribs and the top of my hipbones.

Sounds like regular waist but short rise to me too (opposite of me). So the high rise pants trend may be more difficult for you-your high may be considered mid rise.

My hands are kind of average I think. Not small or large.

I appreciate your input on this, Jenni NZ, it's very helpful!

No, if almost 2 hands then you are slightly short-waisted, exactly 2 hands is regular waisted. More than 2, long waisted. As I said, it also depends on the size of your hands! Are they small? Imagine how much women’s hand sizes vary?
I still do most of this fairly instinctively. I guess that’s where we need a virtual Angie to go shopping with us... sadly she ain’t available here in NZ!

Jenni NZ: yes this seems just like my issue! I guess I thought waist and rise were somehow related. Your lacy top is exactly the kind of thing I look for.

I can fit almost 2 hands, so I guess I'm long waisted but have a short rise??

I instinctively select certain clothing shapes that I feel will fit best, but I wonder how to apply this information now that I have it?

And thinking about this even more, this applies even though my waist is regular. Because I’m short and my hands are small, the distance from my shoulders to my waist is not long at all, hence tops that would be true crop tops on a taller woman may be perfect to just come to the waist on me. You may be similar from the look of your pic

So, you might have a “regular” waist, like me, but a short rise, making an overall short torso, meaning it is hard to find short enough tops. I went shopping for a black top to wear with my older skirt I am rescuing to wear again, yesterday. Finding one short enough was a big challenge as I don’t wish to tuck. I wear my short lacy white top as in pic below a lot in summer, as it is one of my shortest. And I still wear my 2004 short black Mamma Mia T-shirt for the same reason! It’s 15 years old and very faded but so perfect a length!

Hi there, I have an understanding that the torso is a combination of the “waist” ( from diaphragm down to bellybutton) and the “rise” (from pubic bone up to bellybutton). There are posts on this, on my phone right now and can’t link.
To find the “waist”, put your 2 hands on top of one another under your diaphragm. If you fit the two in, as I can, that’s regular waisted. Under two hands, short waisted. Over 2 hands, long waisted.
My “rise”- I prefer relatively high rise pants up to bellybutton- is about 11 inches, when I measured all my favourite pants and jeans they were all the same.
Caveats: I am only about 5 foot 1 and a half, 156 cm tall. Small hands, so two hands fitting is still a small measurement. Like you, most tops are too long on me especially T-shirts. I hunt hard for shorter ones. Sounds like your overall torso is short and your pic confirms.
Sorry if this doesn’t help!

I feel a bit stupid asking this, but I've read various descriptions of what it means to be short or long waisted, and both apply to me, which is obviously not possible .

I'm 5' 3"

I can't wear most 1 piece swimsuits because they don't stretch over my torso.

My son once pointed out that my pant legs are so short they fit entirely on the ironing board, with no overhang. So I have short legs.

I try to wear cropped tops, because even many petite tops are so long on me, they fit like a tunic.

Petite pants fit best, because I find there is too much room in the rise on most.

Am I short waisted or long? Or am I misunderstanding this entirely?

(Adding an older photo of me in a swimsuit if that helps.)
