Yep, I think I get it now, thank you Alecia, Jean and Angie. It is like wearing two velvet pieces in different colors at the same time - not good! I shall skip it.

GG, I really like your suggestions on how to wear a denim vest. I am actually waiting for some white non-denim clamdiggers to arrive, so if they work, I might get the denim vest after all. Thank you so much!

Glad I sparked off some inspiration, Tanya :-)

Jean is spot on and I like her explanation. Hope that helps.

I think that denim is always best paired with a different weight and texture for the fabric of another piece.. In my opinion, the weave of the denim will be to matchy even in different colors. Another problem is how different denim fabric is, it may appear as a bad match. I love the idea of a denim vest over a tshirt dress or very casual dress with flats or a with a graphic tshirt and white smooth, casual cotton (like Khakis) pants or clamdiggers.

Thank you for all the responses so far!

Just to clarify, it is not my imperative to keep the outfit smart casual, I am actually looking for interesting ideas for casual outfits. So yep, I already got two dressier waistcoats for 'smart casual' ( one black wool blend and one white with a tuxedo look) and am looking for more casual alternatives.

I am also curious about the answer to this question in general ( if we are not talking about waistcoats) : would a dark denim jacket in a non-standard shape ( moto or blazer, not classic one) work with white denim skirt? Or, say, a white denim jacket ( again, non-standard shape) with blue denim jeans? Or it is still sketchy and best avoided?

Angie, I absolutely ADORE your idea of light grey pinstripe waistcoat! I already have citron tank and white skinnies, so I think I shall be actively looking for such item to coomplete the outfit. You are such an inspiration!

Alecia is spot on. A twill waistcoat is borderline, but a denim one is risky. Ideally you're looking for a stretch cotton or wool blend to keep it smart casual. A pinstripe in a light grey is also sweet. I’d pair that with citron to make it more Summery. And white jeans – of course.

I'll be interested in the responses, but my gut tells me - white denim plus denim and grey denim plus denim could MAYBE work. I would really depend on the shirt and it could be dicey. I don't think black and denim would go. I think your safest bet is to avoid the denim vest if you think you want to mainly wear it with jeans.

Good question. I was also assuming you could pair them if they don't match but am now wondering if the overall look will be too casual to be smart casual if a graphic tee is used.

I was wondering about this too Tanya (except for me it was in reference to denim jackets). I'm curious to know the answer. My guess is that if it doesn't look "jeansy" it might work. Some denim products have rivets and buttons that make it look like jeans and that might look weird. I definitely could be wrong about that though, but since you can wear a cotton vest with cotton pants, it seems like you should be able to wear a denim vest with denim pants, provided they don't match.

I know not to wear two blue denim pieces at the same time, but I am curious if this applies to if the second piece is white. Also, what id the second piece is grey, or black/black?

The main reason I am asking this is that I am on a hunt for a couple of waistcoats to wear over graphic tees, and have been finding quite a few cute denim ones. So I am wondering if denim vest + arty tee could work with white skinnies/clamdiggers, as well as grey/black ones? Or should I just stick to non-denim vests?
