I change buttons all the time but try to avoid buttons as jewelry effect. I'm in agreement that matching red buttons would be better. Try matte red.

I think matching red buttons would be more modern. That's what all of my cardigans have these days.

Love the lady buttons!

That's it - I will be putting those pink girls on something of my own and will keep trying with other "hacks". It was only $2.80 for the new silver buttons so even if it goes to charity, still worthwhile.

The answer to your question is YES !!! I tinker all the time. Even with shoes. In January I finally found the perfect lightweight wool navy blazer for me...the problem ? Huge gold buttons with eagles on them that I hated. Hated. The blazer now has lovely buttons and is my dream blazer.

The buttons in 4 are to die for. I would pop that on a sweater of shirt with no second thoughts at all. Zap's idea is right on. Many higher end pieces have one or two buttons at the top that are different from the rest, more emphasis. I also like AJ's idea.

You are so creative! I love the lady buttons. I would use one for the top button on the cardigan.
I just changed the buttons on an old coat from gold, to a matching brownish tone. The coat is a brown tweed. I wanted something low contrast.
I'm always hacking my clothes.

Yes! I'm a firm believer that new buttons can give a piece a new lease of life! I just changed 13 (22mm) buttons on a purple shirt dress from cream to charcoal grey and since they are quite large and statement-y, it made *all* the difference.

I love the buttons in #4! I'd have them on something in a heartbeat :0)

LOVE buttons in #4. I'd wear them on MY cardi as whimsical!

Definitely, the new buttons in #3 are an improvement --- but maybe something bolder still would work? Black geometric (diamond? square?) or cobalt blue? or something in leather?

Well you gave the red cardigan one last try at least.

Fun buttons in #4! Why not glue them on to some push pins?

I thought this was a good idea this morning - to change the frumpy old lady white pearl buttons on this red cashmere cardigan (#1/#2 before) to something more modern.
At fabric store I choose a silver medal, modern button and did the switch tonight. Closeup #3
It is an improvement but still, I think I will end up donating or passing on the cardi. I will be putting a new red cardigan (and a heather or charcoal gray) on replace list.

I did have success with a daytime sparkle type sweater which is DH fave - it had tacky plastic buttons (the rest of sweater is nice - the buttons were weird and missing two) but now sports subtle gray mother of pearl.

I couldn't resist the pink buttons pictured in #4 as I thought DD would like them on a sweater but she wasn't as wild about them as I am. They look like Kate Spade or a modern Elizabeth Bennett and I couldn't resist. Now I have button orphans :0
