I have just posted this on its own thread (about the skirt) but I think grey with white (as per your advice) worked here
http://i297.photobucket.com/al.....0_6986.jpg.

Thanks for the extra post there Angie - the complexity is frustrating and liberating at the same time!

Nice, Shiny!

This is how I wear light grey:

http://youlookfab.com/2009/04/.....loral-pin/

As I have mentioned several times, colour rules *can* box type you inaccurately. They are best left as very rudimentary guidelines. I look awful in mid tones and shades with blue undertones, yet I have very blue veins that pop out all over my body! I wear hot, bright, clean, sour colours best - even blues can be “hot” if the shade is right and I wear those too. My skin is pale and pink and yet I look good in white, cream and black. Many colour theories would have boxed me into the mid tone colour spectrum, which does not work. Very interesting.

And above all, you cannot see colours in isolation. That’s always my main point :0)

Thanks Angie and Shiny! Shiny you have shown the outworkings of Angie's advice beautifully! Thanks for all that work - I am glad it was helpful for you too.
I'll see if I can start showing some outfits putting all this into practice.

We both like grey with pearls and cream purses or jackets though. :-)

Anne - I guess there's the blue vs yellow undertone issue AND there's also light versus dark. I have blue undertones (you can see lots of blue veins in my wrists, and under my eyes) as well as lots of redness too. (one of the reasons I like to wear foundation). So I like greys that have a blue undertone.

As for light vs dark, I would opt for light over dark. I think this is about the contrast that Imogen talks about. The darkest I would go would be a medium grey for the contrast. So this may be why I don't own anything in charcoal grey like your suit. Hmm, come to think of it, with a choice between a charcoal grey suit jacket and a navy one, I would probably choose navy instead. But, a light grey suit jacket I would definitely wear. I don't own any right now but in the past I have and loved it. (thinking about my very first interview suit...)

And I don't particularly care for "sweatshirt grey" but - to Angie's point -it's probably not the color so much as the matte texture that I find unappealing.

Examples:

1) Medium grey - with white shirt and pearls, which I think really add something if you are blonde and fair like we are:
http://s386.photobucket.com/al.....orm169.jpg

2) Medium grey again... this is about as dark as I would go ... I am guessing the texture adds a lot. I have also worn this sweater with a crisp white shirt underneath, and liked it even better that way:
http://s386.photobucket.com/al.....orm063.jpg

3) This is a patterned top but again it's a darker grey... I think it works because it has sheen (to Angie's point about texture):
http://s386.photobucket.com/al.....ght072.jpg

4) Another medium gray. This has blue undertones to it. It works best with a lot of white added to it (white cami, pearls, jacket):
http://s386.photobucket.com/al.....r19020.jpg

5) My two favorite gray tops - are light, and have a blue-based undertone. The first has no special texture the second does:
http://s386.photobucket.com/al.....008046.jpg

http://s386.photobucket.com/al.....orm284.jpg

... in that second pic you'll notice one of my favorite skirts, which is a charcoal gray. I don't know if I'd wear this color near my face - without a white or other light shirt.

6) Ooh! I happen to have a pic on my hard-drive of my very first suit!! I loved this suit (but not the permed hair - which incidentally is my natural color - before hair dye ever touched it).
http://s386.photobucket.com/al.....ionday.jpg
... notice my sister, with her darker coloring, opted for a darker gray suit.

You can't see it in that pic but the blouse I was wearing was also a favorite: it had a gigantic, over-sized, overly dramatic collar and a black tie. It was adorable. I wish I still had it. :-(

That was fun! I don't think I ever analyzed it all like this; I just instinctively gravitate towards what feels right. Thanks for making me think, Anne!

You can wear grey, Anne. The lasses have covered it all and I have little to add.

I don’t think we’re getting you in the exact shade of grey in the pictures of the cardi and a suit because of the light. But like me, you need to be careful with grey – you have to wear it textured or “cleaned up” in order for it to look flattering. Shiny and I are both fair skinned and blonde but we have different complexions and therefore wear different colours with grey. I hope that makes sense.

Anne, I've been contemplating this question too, as I think the *right* shade of gray may be one of my best neutrals. I've decided a medium charcoal gray (like the jacket or the long sweater) is the best color of gray for me. From what I can see of your pictures, I'd say the same is true for you. Actually, the photo of the silver-gray cardi is too dark for me to tell how it looks with your skin tone. I think the charcoal suit does look a bit dark, but with a brighter top as suggested (maybe a bright pink?) I think it would work.

Thanks everyone. Some encouragement there to wear certain shades of grey, particularly the lighter ones.

One more picture ( from YLF 7 months ago before I bought skinnies)

http://i297.photobucket.com/al.....0_5684.jpg

I won't be wearing my charcoal suit any time soon, but when I finally do, I'll remember your suggestions re brighter tops

Shiny, I didn't think you looked that bad in brown actually! - but I know I do. Apart from my boots, I hardly own anything brown.

I think most can wear grey if you find the right shade. Some greys have blue tones. Others have green or even yellow or pink tones. I especially like the lighter greys with your delicate coloring and agree with shiny that charcoal is probably better than black for you. I'm guessing that a light grey is a better color for you than beige or tan and charcoal better than chocolate brown.

I think you look good in grey, too. I actually like the charcoal look the best. But I agree that with your glasses the sliver grey will look stunning. One of the things that is throwing me off a bit with the cardigan look is that the top is kind of muted in terms of the color. So I think it kind of washes you out a little. I think it would be really great if you had a brighter color closer to your face, i.e. top or glasses.

I think you look fantastic in gray. I remember that dress in particular! Love that dress on you. The cardigan is also wonderful.

I think the suit is throwing me off only because the sleeves look a tad too long, but charcoal can be so much more forgiving for blondes than black, which can be a bit harsh. Try a french blue top under this suit? And I think the cordoroy(?) jacket works because it's a blue-ish gray.

We have similar coloring and I'm starting to realize that gray is a much better neutral on me than black or brown. I probably have too many gray blouses now, but I wouldn't mind adding a suit jacket, slacks, vest, or another dress myself.

Hi, Anne. I think you can definitely wear grey- the pale shades in particular look great on you. I love the cardi and the dress! The charcoal suit I'm less crazy about, but it could just be the photo. I think I'd like it more with a colourful blouse underneath, instead of the white tee.

I am also thinking that these light grey pieces will look terrific with your new glasses. Deep red and light grey is a great combination.

I have thought for a while that I can't wear grey, but owing to it being around so much over the last 15 years I have ended up with quite a lot of it. Not wearing grey would really cut down on my options. What do you think?

Silver grey cardi http://i297.photobucket.com/al.....oz/249.jpg
