Nicole, it definitely looks like a moth hole, but since I did not really store it at all and did not put it away with any stains on it, I don't think it could have been. The hole is in a conspicuous place, unfortunately. The sweater is made of fine-gauge merino wool--it is similar to the Tartine cardigan now on J. Crew's website, but the ruffled collar is merino, not chiffon.

I probably still have the thread around here somewhere--I always keep those things even though I never end up using them. I'll see if someone can fix it for me. Thanks for all the replies!

Do you think it is a manufacurers defect? I always feel that the store would want feedback on poor quality of things they are selling. For no other reason you might approach them with the attitude that they should know that in your case this brand did not hold up. If they get many like complaints they will know something is up with that brand, or maker. I hope they will at least give you store credit. They do want you as a repeat customer I'm sure.

It may have been the dry-cleaner's fault. (I never dry-clean my cashmere sweaters - I hand wash instead). Or it got snagged on something in storage. Or could be moths (though I doubt that - not the season).

I'd take it to a tailor or dry cleaner - if it's a tiny hole, they can be fixed. Did the sweater come with a little plastic bag with some thread in it? Do you still have it?

If not, it may still not be a lost cause. I have repaired sweaters myself using simple old-fashioned thread to darn the hole up. It works best on black or white sweaters with tiny holes in inconspicous places nobody would really notice.

Thanks for the replies. I would have felt a little funny trying to return it so I just wanted to get a sense of how others handle these things. If I had snagged the sweater or done something that caused the hole, I would not be frustrated (or I would, but not in the same way). It just appeared, a tiny hole right in the front of the sweater. I don't think it can be repaired to wear on its own, but maybe i can put it under a jacket.

Probably won't stop me from buying another one--maybe J. Crew has similar style in new colors for fall!

i dont think you'd be able to return it - generally if you don't have a receipt for something, they will refund you the amount that it is currently selling at. however, since you bought it in april, they probably don't even have it in store anymore. would you be able to repair it? if it's along the seam, you should be able to pretty easily.

Can you tell what made the hole? I would think that since you have worn it, drycleaned it and don't have a receipt, you'd have to be able to make a case that the whole is a result of a problem with construction of the sweater (like the seam unraveling) rather than normal wear and tear. You can always try -- but if you could find the receipt, that would probably help a lot.

I was upset yesterday when I put on one of my favorite cardigans and there was a hole in it. I think I bought it in April and have only worn it 4-5 times, and drycleaned it once. It was basically new.

Do you think that I can return it to J. Crew? I very rarely try to return things that I have worn, but it is frustrating especially when I have paid full price for something. I will have to look for the receipt but do you think they will take it back without the receipt?
