I'd just like to say how much I like your write-ups. You are so articulate and have such thoughtful and though-provoking, concise content. I so love your positivity :)

Having said that, you look great! I have no deep-winter advice. I find I just reach for comfy-cozy and do a lot of repeats. It's not crazy cold here, mostly wet, so I'm usually just trying to stay dry.

This is fabulous I love the polka dot blouse, very stylish for the cold. Usually I love the cold weather with lots of layering opportunities but I'm in a bit of a slump starting this year so I'm living vicariously through you x

Karymk, that's the spirit! And we've had a warm up recently. It's actually 15F today (gulp)! I'm trying to find that balance between longevity in my fashion choices, and updated look, and personal style. You manage those three things beautifully.

Oh I love that blouse! I love the hem AND the tie! Especially the tie. It's a modern interpretation of a dot so it's not at all ditzy! You better wear that piece to death now and through spring Beth Ann.

No sense in dressing deep winter if you don't feel "deep winter", ya know?

Angie: Crossposted! Thanks for the thumbs up for red all year round! Time to get creative and keep the spirits up!

Shannon: One of my jewel tone sisters! We can rock red together.

Crutcher: Well loved sweaters are the best!

Diane: I see what you see -- all about the proportions. The shorter jackets (like this one) look "off" to me now. The loose flowing shirts helps it work.

Windchime: The cactus sounds lovely! What a beautiful way to keep the holidays with you.

Keturah: Champagne! A marvelous way to think about it.

KM: I run warm, which works well this time of year. I'll run errands with just a light jacket with temps near freezing. Not now! My DD made my DH some hand/foot warmers with fleece and rice. He heats them in the microwave (they smell funny, btw). They don't last nearly as long as the commercial versions, but they're good for a single driveway shovel!

Beth Ann, that's funny! I did live in a cold climate many years ago, but it wasn't nearly as cold as here. I had some memory of things I wore then, but the fashion was so different (I can't remember people tucking their pants into boots at all--more than ten years ago). The funny thing is: I got this coat when I lived in the DC area--so, not a frigid place! But I run so cold, and I commuted via public transit and walking so much, that I thought I needed warmth. When I moved to MN last August I was happy to already have some warm items... (I also have those disposable hand and toe warmers!)

That blouse was made for you! The polka dots are in an irregular formation, so it almost feels like champagne bubbles And the cut and style is glamorous and romantic.

I love the whole outfit - the deep blue and black balance out the sweetness from the blouse and keep it chic and modern.

You truly look fab!

Yes, I would like to pass on deep winter as well.

Your new blouse looks wonderful on you! It's classic and romantic at the same time.

I hear you on this time of year. I turn to blooming houseplants to help me get through. Happily, one of my Christmas cactus plants is just setting buds now, and I also have an orchid with a bud. I often treat myself with a new blooming plant in winter, too, maybe a cyclamen or primrose. I also buy and liberally use candles during these dark months.

Oh, and I have strings of tiny white lights on an artificial ficus tree.

The other thing that helps is that the next three months are extremely busy for me; it keeps my focus off the weather and makes the winter pass more quickly.

KM: Just saw your WIW post --- I would have thought you were a veteran of upper-midwest winters! Well done! As for visible undergarments, I never even got the visible strap trend from a few years ago!

Sarah: I'm glad you noticed the random pattern. I thought that was a key element in making this piece a little more modern. Many forum members seem to enjoy their winter outfit formulas, as least into February! I'm a rather restless spirit, making it hard for me to repeat joyfully. Wait a minute, maybe that can a style goal ........ repeat joyfully!

Suz: I have to try this. I have one small "upscale faux" tree that has a natural woodlands look. Perhaps I will just place it in the living room, where it will keep me happy. And perhaps we can string a few lights in the front windows!

As for "wearing my clothes," perhaps I should take a "cue" from you and Sarah. To keep the music analogy going, I could do a "da capo" capsule. Technically, da capo means, "to the head." In an aria, it refers to the repeat of the first section, usually with a few extra flourishes added. Maybe I can "reprise" (now I'm completely out of control with the musical allusions) my Holiday capsule, which I liked, adding some new Deep Winter Flourishes.

I love the polka dot blouse. I think the random pattern of the dots makes it feel more modern and less prim.

I'm not sure how to stay inspired in deep winter as my winters are fairly mild in comparison to Alaska or Canada. I still enjoy the skinnies, boots, and sweater combo so don't feel bored with winter dressing yet.

Beth Ann, re the lights: That is exactly what I do.

Seriously, it's my new tradition. Now, mind you, we do not put our lights up outside. This is our concession to Mark's Judaism. He feels outdoor Christmas lights are just a bit too much for him. But we do put them up around several windows inside, as well as on our tree. Now, obviously, I have to take the tree down (it is a real one) and so my plan is to do that later this weekend. (I always leave it up rather late, but then we do not put it up until almost Christmas anyway.)

But we leave the lights around the windows until mid-March. When the light starts noticeably returning here. I get rid of the tree, get rid of all the bits of red that I decorate with for the holidays, and simply leave the white lights. It's genius.

As for your outfit, it is GORGEOUS on you. I love you in that ladylike, relaxed blouse. The V neck is beautiful. It's absolutely perfect for your style persona.

I don't know how to find inspiration in deep winter. In pre-winter, Una's silhouette challenge really helped me. I am taking pleasure in GP's self-challenge to copy other fabbers, but it looks too ambitious to me. Ingunn has another challenge going but some of them I can't do (lack of requisite items) and some do not feel like a challenge to me. So....I think we'll have to come up with something else. Maybe wearing my clothes. Right now I am wearing my long polartec undies because I've just come in from shovelling and stripped off all my other layers....

Beth Ann, this is my first midwestern winter, and I quickly fell into an uninspired rut with the first big freeze in November. My inspiration to get out of the rut was coming here to this forum!

I absolutely adore the shirt. I love the color, the polka dots and the tie. You balance its softness so well with the more streamlined elements of the outfit. I love it both with the jacket and on its own.

(I couldn't really tell you were wearing a black cami underneath, but reading your post reminded me of some looks that Carrie sported in Sex and the City where she would wear dark bras under sheer light-colored tops on purpose... I never quite got that!)

Good (freezing) morning!

Una: Perhaps people in Alaska are more willing to see the lights as beacons of hope! Really, couldn't we just keep them until the days start getting noticeably longer?

Firecracker: We were mild in December, with no snow on Christmas. I actually like the snow --- it can stay on the ground until Valentine's (that my plan), but with temps around 30. I walk outdoors in the local forest preserves in the 20's, particularly when it's sunny, but single digits (or below zero) is out of the question! I was wearing all my booties before the deep freeze. Perhaps I need a more exciting option for my "toasty feet" footwear capsule?

ABC: I feel this so often when I'm on the forum at night! Maybe you're hibernating?

Rute: I have added a few luxurious cardis this season, and I'm so glad I did! And at least my puffer is red, for a bit of color.

Joyce and Lyn: Thanks for the thumbs up to the blouse!

Crutcher: I have no cashmere in my closet, but I'd like to remedy that!

Your outfit looks great and I think the beautiful jacket in that color makes it a happy outfit.
You can pass on Winter but only if I can pass too...
Now the thing is just to stay warm and safe.

I'm having the same problem, it's cold, my office is cold and I'm living in boots, skinnies and knits!
You are doing better than me eh eh that outfit is fabulous.
I find that a coat or a knit in a gorgeous flattering color helps

Your shirt is great. I identified with a lot of things in your post. Too sleepy to put more thoughts down.

I like your blouse, Beth Ann! It looks great with your black skinnies and blue blazer, and the semi-tuck. Your romantic streak is pretty and fun.
Hmmmm, how do I stay inspired in deep winter? Well, deep winter here isn't that bad right now, so I've been enjoying walking outdoors in the mild weather and dulled-down winter sun. But in one word: boots. I love my boot collection, and it's really fun to keep cozy by wearing them. That said, I have to admit I've been wearing my gray shimmer oxfords this week, because it has been just that mild. I guess I'm inspired by shoes, huh?

Inspired? Hahahaha. The better question is "how do I stay sane?". Luckily it's only the start of real winter here this year - normally I'd be already packing for our trip to Hawaii in March.

My silhouette challenge has also been mildly helpful this year.

We are leaving our Christmas decorations up - it makes it more cheerful in the house!

It's been wickedly cold. Even worse, I've had to take down my Christmas decorations, lest I bear the scorn of my neighbors. Surely DH should get extra credit for taking down the outside ornaments in below zero temps with blowing snow!

I'm completely lacking in inspiration for my Deep Winter capsule, so I'm mostly continuing to wear my favorite casual outfits from my holiday capsule. So what? Red can work for Valentine's, too! I am, however, making a 2015 plan, and I find myself drawn to the transitional outfits of Spring. Since I run warm, and work indoors, I can wear some of these when the weather outside is still foul -- just not this foul.

One of my fashion epiphanies (now that Epiphany is over and gone):
The romantic part of my style persona is alive and well. Romance to me means luxurious fabrics, rich colors, and feminine cuts that are classic or slightly retro but never fussy or girlish.

While looking for one or two mid-season refresher pieces, I ran across this fluid blouse at the Loft Outlet, which brings me to a second epiphany:
As long as I pay attention to quality of fabric and construction, outlets are my friend. They fit my budget, and are often cut just a tad more generously than the main store lines. When you're a 14, this means everything fits you, without ordering the "special" sizes (I'm talking to you, J. Crew).

I'm not usually a polka-dot girl, as they can be a bit prim, but this print, on an ivory background, seemed more relaxed than most. I was attracted to the fluid fit, the neckline (yay for a modest V) and the structure in the shoulder line holding it all together. I wish it had a contoured hem, and I'm sure the tie is not everyone's cuppa.

I threw it on to show you just as I was making dinner -- I' won't really wear it over a black cami! I was already wearing the skinnies, but I do rather like it with the semi tuck and boots. I've paired it with the blue ponte jacket (I hope the longer, looser blouse updates the jacket, while still looking classic), and I can see this item worn tucked or untucked with my many tube midis. I plan to wear it with distinctly modern, strong elements -- booties, rather than pumps, for example.

How do you stay inspired in Deep Winter? Anyone have any New Year Epiphanies to add?
