Angie - yes, that's the hat. As usual your memory's amazing. Nicole, thanks for the article, how interesting. Maya, I definitely have some of the rebel in me too

I think some rules are just dying to be broken, and this is one of them. I really fail to see how wearing a hat indoors is offensive or inappropriate. It's one of those etiquette rules that actually defeats the purpose of etiquette--which is to make people feel comfortable and at ease. I'd much rather see a cute hat than bad hair.

My friend wears a newsboy hat to class sometimes if she's running late and her hair is a mess. I never gave it a second thought.

I think most men don't have any reservations about wearing hats indoors these days, so neither should women. If it's a casual situation, like going out for lunch with some friends, I really don't see what the big deal is. I wouldn't do it at the opera, but that has more to do with the casual nature of the hat and not the hat itself. Of course, bear in mind that I am a rebel and am quite comfortable doing things I'm probably not supposed to

It depends on what you are worried about. Etiquette rules do not require a woman to remove her hat indoors except for a few isolated situations. But what was proper 40 years ago when everyone wore hats is considerably different from what people are willing to do today, now that hats are more casual and much less worn.

But, if you're not worried about what the older generation think of your hat etiquette, and you're only concerned with how you look to the younger generation, then wearing a hat indoors will not evoke any gasps. I am always dismayed at seeing men and boys wearing hats indoors. My dad has always been a very chivalrous man, so it was instilled in me that men remove their hats indoors, during National Anthems, and formal processions, Like funerals.

Here's a great article on hat etiquette both historically and modern day.

You look adorable in your newsboy hat! We were together when you bought it :-)

Unfortunately I do not think it's appropriate to keep a hat on indoors. Hats should be taken off inside especially if you're going to sit down. If you're browsing in and out of shops on the street, it's a little different. This is easier to do in Europe where most things are sort of on the street and you pop in and out of shops all day long. But keeping a hat on in the office, or in a home or in a mall is odd.

Ana's thread on hats has prompted this. I love hats but get terrible hat head from them. Is it appropriate to wear hats indoors? Ideally I'd like to keep my hat on the whole day both inside and outside when I wear them. If it depends on the type of hat you wear, I currently have a newsboy hat.
