Bummer about the sheerness! I hope you find it in a non-sheer color.

This landsend top arrived on Friday. With some misgivings I returned it on Saturday.

The top was GREAT. It was exceptionally well made. It was long enough through the body. There was no gap in front where it buttoned. The single problem is that was ever so slightly sheer, meaning I could see my pants beneath the top. This is a personal pet peeve. I can't get over it and from past experience it would languish in my closet. Still I liked it enough to see if Landsend sold other colors that would be more opaque.

Like Author Linda, Staysfit, and others - I've been a fan of Land's end for about 30 years. Back then most of their stuff was 'made in the USA' and lots of 100% natural fibres. I could get 'slim' and 'tall' for my hard to fit DS's and DH. In the past 5+ or - years the quality is less dependable with more synthetics and fabrics thinner (from t-shirts to corduroys. ).

Hi Texstyle. I did look at that shirt from Everlane last year. At that time, reviewers commented on the sheerness so I never actually bought it or saw it in person. If my Landsend one fails me, I'll look at Everlane again. Thank you for the recommendation.

Because my style is casual preppy and I tend to wear gear-ish things, I like Lands' End. I think they are the most "forward" of the gear sellers like Eddie Bauer, LLBean, REI etc. They have great sales. I really like their button front shirts. My black puffer is Lands' End. Caveat is I live in Nebraska so my fashion sense is skewed and we don't have a lot of fashion-forward stores other than on-line options.

I buy a lot for DH from LE and it works for him - long lasting, etc. For me, it's a bit different. I have a slim flannel shirt I think from there that is great quality but most of the things are just not the right shape and fabric for me. I can't stand stiff or thick fabric at all. I used to buy from their Canvas brand several years back but then they changed it all considerably. I still own many tees I bought for like $15 and they have outlasted nearly every other tee I own. I use them for lounge wear though as they aren't really "fashion" tees.

Did you consider a silk sleeveless from everlane by chance? I don't have white but I thought they offered it in white and the other colors seem substantial enough. They may also have a cotton version but that would require ironing so not for me.

I have a personal rule - don't pay for shipping. With Lands End, things that don't work out can be returned to Sears. Sears owned Lands End for awhile. However, I heard something on the radio about Sears' very doubtful future. The last few times I've been in Sears it did look kind of dismal.

I can speak to the ponte knit dresses. They are well-made substantial cotton fabrics in lovely colors, nicely shaped, and machine washable. Unfortunately, the most colorful (red, coral) have shrunk in the hipline in the wash such that now I will be going to the tailor to let out seams. I am very careful with my clothing: cold wash, hang dry, so it wasn't anything I did. Kind of defeats the purpose of the under $50 sale dress--but this is perhaps a case of you get what you pay for.

I have two old oxford shirts from LE that are excellent -- all cotton, not a bit sheer, perfectly tailored. They were from the "Canvas" line and true to size, not at all boxy or oversized. I don't know if they do the Canvas line for women anymore. I think it was modelled a bit on the LL Bean "Signature" idea -- modernized classics in higher quality materials than their regular line.

Also, their size range for men is excellent. My husband is hard to fit -- needs true slim cut shirts, which LE offers (unlike, say, JCrew, whose "slim" shirts are enormous).

The quality is usually excellent, and items such as tees and knitwear wash well and retain their shape. I also like their large range of colours. Their clothes used to be rather untrendy at one time, but they've improved a lot in recent years, in my opinion, both in style and fit options.

Agree that the sizing tends to run large.

I purchase basics from Landsend all the time. Their clothes generally wear like iron. Staysfit family members have sensitive skin and dislike scratchy textures/materials. I admit that most of the items purchased are for DS and DH. They carry tall and slim sizes. In fact, when DS was home for Spring break last week he asked me to order some Landsend tees because he liked the long sleeve version I had sent him to college with in the Fall. They looked good and felt soft despite his poor college laundry habits of throwing everything together in one load for the wash in the dorm machine.

I haven't purchased their tops in a long time but I don't recall any problems with them. I cannot answer the question about whether they are boxy. Lots of things look boxy on me because I'm tall and narrow. I stopped buying Landsend because of sizing issues. Their smallest tall size was too large for me, and I was able to find other clothes that fit better and required fewer alterations.

I've generally had good luck with Land's End, and I've shopped LE for decades. Literally. My now adult sons went through elementary through high school wearing LE, and so did mom. Today I mostly buy LE jeans and casual pants, and outerwear, for which they're well-known.

LE tees and shirts are good basics. Like you, I find them boxy. The fabric is usually decent quality: a thicker cotton knit than most tees today, not at all see through. I'm less sure about blouses and shirts. The ones I bought didn't feel scratchy, but I'm not super sensitive to cottons or polyesters, just wool. (LE cashmere sweaters have been good buys for me over the years, but have gotten thinner just as have most other brands of cashmere.)

I always say give LE a shot. They may have just the right thing for you. I hope this item proves to be a winner!

LE runs a bit large. Quality has varied some in recent years, but used to be reliably solid (and things can be returned whenever, for whatever reason.)

You may want to know that LE offended people on both sides of the political spectrum and lost many customers last year, resulting in the firing of their CEO. You can Google for the details if you want to know more.

I notice that Janice from The Vivienne Files features quite a lot of Landsend merchandise when she builds her wardrobe ensembles. I am very much drawn to the idea of solid foundation pieces with good lines. I don't know anything about the quality of the product though. The few times I have been in Sears, it seemed to me that the pieces were shapeless and square. But the worst part was that the fabric seemed really scratchy (really scratchy) to me. I always walked away.

BUT I have been searching high and low for a sleeveless opaque shirt. Last year I searched every single retailer in our mall. Nothing. I gave up mid-Summer but never forgot how useful that type of garment would be to me.

Janice featured exactly what I was looking for on her website this morning. I decided to try it. I am not sure why I have misgivings.

Well, I do know. I have developed some weird sensitivity to fabrics or fabric dyes. Poor quality fabrics tend to make me scratch. I never forget I am wearing them. I have had to stop wearing ALL wool and some polyesters.
