@Liesbeth You’ve done great with finding your perfect style :)

@slim cat Yay for jeans! ❤️ Once in a while I will wear longer tops not tucked and I have some graphic tees and a duster. I get what you are saying though to try new styles and I will try and that outfit idea is pretty

Another lover of jeans here! I fell in love with longer toppers over jeans/graphic t-shirt combo - long plaid tunic shirts, dusters in different fabrics, dresses worn as open dusters, long cardigans. I wonder if you'll be open to try such combo - it dresses outfits and showcases long legs.
I'm fond of ones from EXPRESS .

Yup... I think I'm neither a very visual nor a detail-oriented person, so I've had to learn all of the things to be at least somewhat adequate ;). And I'm still amazed at those who can make unusual color or silhouette combinations withoutbreaking a sweat, or indeed, recognizing exactly what's right or wrong with a certain pant rise or so.

@suntiger Agreed clothing will look different on everyone, and I do look through the WIW for inspiration :)

@Fashintern That’s a great attitude to have, wearing what makes you happy is most important

On here, sure. But irl I wear what suits me, not things that seem to pull me in a certain direction that I or the giver have decided would be desirable. I’d prefer my other attributes be noted, so whether I’m “in fashion” or “stylish” really doesn’t bother me.

I'm with you Jenni, though I live in the US!

Jess, we all have different shapes and proportions, so the same garment will look very different. Even if the size number is same, measurements are unique. Even a couple inches here or there will make the rise or shape look different on one body vs another.

I'd suggest checking out the WIWs for all styles, not just jeans outfits. You may find color, pattern, accessory, or other inspiration.

I can’t imagine giving anyone advice, so I mostly just watch and learn.

@bridgie Thank you for the support and I hope the comments will be helpful for you too!

@Sal That is great advice knowing simple outfits can be just as good as elaborate ones, I’m big on dressing casual or relaxed and content with that. Good pointers for buying jeans, but I agree what may fit someone perfectly of the same size/height might not fit another quite the same so sizing isn’t always accurate.

@rachylou Lol good advice, you do sound like me walking in the store Its not color blindness some of just have a hard time matching, or we just have such a unique style that branches out from the norm and that’s ok too! YLF has helped me, and going into stores and seeing the outfits they have on display has been a helpful visual guide aswell.

@Jenni NZ, Too funny! Yes it would seem most North Americans do love our jeans, and I am no different! But I know many other Countries where jeans are just as popular, it’s all about your individual style so it’s best to wear what YOU like. :)
For me I like the casual look and comfort of them, they are versatile to wear for *almost* any occasion with the different styles/rises/washes. I don’t wear jewelry much and so adding a belt to an outfit gives that extra touch I lack from no jewelry.

@nemosmom Yes girl! That’s a great way to explain how I feel, am I just putting clothes on or is this an acceptable outfit. Sometimes it’s hard to tell, but often I do get compliments on my outfits so I think I need to feed into my inner confidence and trust my judgement more often.
YLF has helped posting my outfits in WIW, that perspective of others did bring out pointers I wouldn’t of noticed.

@torontogirl Thank you so much for all the wonderful feedback. I really like this wealth of information:
- “ My suggestion is, keep it simple but don't be afraid to try something a little out of your comfort zone. Take photos, ask for feedback, and be true to yourself - a very understated outfit might be just right for you“.

Asking for feedback has helped me so much as is reading what others post in their topics. Helena you made me laugh with your comment about your closet full of jeans because that’s me too, I love them even if they look similar I’m always looking for more I like!
My usual way of dressing, jeans would be high on the list in different blacks and blues. For tops I do have other colors than black; I tend to favor blacks, greys, and white as colorful tops draw attention and as mentioned in another topic of comfort zone I feel shy if “stand out”. I do have tops of various colors I wear but I’ve gotten more compliments on the black, gray and white tops so I’ve stuck with them often for that reason too. I don’t have many graphic tees but I’ll probably buy some.
I also have leggings, sweatpants, one or two khaki pants I think don’t fit anymore, casual and dress sweaters, camis, tank tops, hoodies, some button down plaid shirts, and others I’m probably forgetting.

I’ll work on more colorful tops or possibly a brighter belt to start

Sorry, piping in again - Jess, could you identify your usual uniform - I'm guessing (from the few pics I've seen) that it's something like jeans, a black t-shirt and a neutral belt. Maybe try swapping out one element ... like, to Jenni's point, try a jogger-style pant rather than jeans, or experiment with colour in the t-shirts rather than black, or a bright or patterned belt rather than neutral. If you're a uniform dresser, just work with that - but pick one simple element to switch up and experiment with, and see what you think.

Hahah, Jenni, you would hate my closet ... it's all jeans that are two degrees of style separation apart, plus two pairs of skinny pants that get shoved right to the back to be pulled out once or twice a year for work purposes

Jenni - you just made my day I came home from work feeling pretty blech -and this made me laugh out loud. Love it.

And now that I'm here, no, I don't feel particularly fashion -challenged, because I've been working at this my entire life. I've honed my eye through years and years of absorbing knowledge, images, techniques and information . That doesn't mean I don't feel challenged getting certain things right though, because everyone does at times. You mention not being able to assess colour - have you been diagnosed with a colour-blindness issue? I can only imagine how difficult that would be. The best way to learn here is to read and absorb - there's a wealth of information in the archives, and in old forum posts.

It’s difficult for me to comment Jess because of how you want to wear jeans all the time- and I hardly wear jeans, I have precisely 3 pairs. I feel out of step with most of the North Americans on the forum in that way, because many of you seem to wear them on a daily basis and have what seems to me a bewildering number and variety of styles, rises etc. It feels to me like the Australians and NZers and Europeans on the forum do not post jeans nearly as much.
Is it that jeans and belts are your only clothing loves, or are you nervous about branching out beyond them?
To me, and I am sure all the many owners of multiple pairs of jeans will wish to either shoot me or enlighten me, one pair of jeans looks much like another so it doesn’t surprise me that much that you mix them up.
I think this comment might win most unhelpful forum comment of the year.

Shopping online is difficult that way. A time or two, I HAVE contacted sellers for details/opinions and have gotten good answers.

Seeing is an interesting matter. YLF is really helpful that way. We only see what we’re prepared to see, that’s how the brain and vision work. I walk into a store and see these things: puff sleeves, red and blue plaid, ankle pants. Lol. I’m not colour blind, but I’ll do things like call turquoise ‘green’ - and the way you categorise matters. I mean, lumping turquoise in with green is NOT what you call fine-tuned control. Lolol! I totally use YLF to show me things I would never have noticed/done on my own.

I think simple outfits can be fantastic. Sometimes we don’t need to overthink things.

Shopping online is a reality for tall sizes. I would take note if details like the length of the rise in your favourite jeans. The width of the ankle opening. Descriptions can vary- one persons skinny is another persons slim. And mid and high rise can mean almost the same thing.

For as long as I can remember buying clothing and picking the right outfits to wear has always been difficult for me.

One of my biggest problems is shopping online and I can’t visualize what those clothing items will look on me, so I always second guess if I should buy something and saving tags to return is always necessary. For my tall length clothing often I am forced to buy online when stores don’t have long enough sizing so it’s something I can’t avoid.

Secondly, when I do put my outfit on often I have a hard time recognizing if it actually looks good and matches or if I’m just slapping something on and hope it looks good. Matching the right colors has been most challenging, like shoes and belts with shirts and bags or pants, is there even a right and wrong way LOL. I’ve always been a basic/casual dresser and I think feeling overwhelmed if what I picked looks good or not made it easier to not fuss how I look.
Don’t get me wrong I like to look nice, and I rarely wear jewelry simply because I don’t find it comfortable, maybe this is just who I am?

The last thing I find challenging is when posting on others outfits, like jeans for example, I barely can tell what rise or style jean they have on even though I own and wear the same jeans! It’s the oddest issue, they look so similar it’s hard for me to point out the little details to tell them apart. I’ve even put on the wrong pairs of my own when in a hurry because I failed to read the label

Those are my reasons for feeling fashionably challenged, though I do enjoy trying to help others here with feedback on their outfits and it has helped me improve my own styling.
