Thanks Maya and Rute, this is really helpful. I like all of your suggestions and think they would work for me. I'm still a tad hestitant with the longer tunics since I'm technically petite, but I do not tuck and don't like short. I think I"m gonna try on some of the longer tunics and see I can maket them work though. I also agree about a lower slung belt, seems to flatter okay. Oh and I definitely don't do low rise, I have too much muffin top potential! Thanks again for your suggestions, I was just worried that a shorter waist meant "undefined" and didn't fit with the hourglass description.

Oh, Rute is the hourglassiest person I have ever seen, so that should put the question of "can you be a shortwaisted hourglass" to rest!

OK, here is what I do to balance out my short waist:

-I love tunics and dresses because they are good at hiding where the torso ends and the legs begin.
-I keep my tops long, close to crotch length
-If a shirt I like is a little shorter than my preference, I try to buy it in a dark color. I wear dark jeans a lot and buying the top in a dark color means there won't be as much of a visible break between where the shirt ends and the jeans begin.
-Empire waists are great if you have a small-average bust. I have a large bust but sometimes I can get away with them.
-You can belt but it might take some experimenting. Skinny belts can sometimes work. I have a chain belt that I occasionally wear at the hip. Even wide belts can work if they are positioned a little lower over a dress or tunic. I don't really take advantage of these options because I find it uncomfortable, but it can look okay.
-There is a lot of advice saying we should wear low rise jeans but I don't agree. Low rise is uncomfortable and unflattering unless you have a stomach like a board. If your shirts are the right length and you don't tuck in your tops, no one is going to see how long your jeans are, so just wear whatever is comfortable for you.

Sure. Your body type sounds very similar to mine and I am a shortwaisted hourglass. Will reply in more detail in a bit...

be short waisted? I think that's what I am, but not sure. My measurments are 38/28/38. I'm just under 5'4, but I have slightly longish legs for my height, but a very short waist. Any flattering styles or recommendations? Belts don't work for me, so that's why I'm questioning the hourglass!

Thanks so much, I'm new here, but looking forward to figuring this all out!
