Julie, I haven't had time to get to the cobbler - three days of houseguests sucked it all up... I am planning to get them if the cobbler says yay at a reasonable price. Thanks for asking!

Actually, I think this would be a relatively easy alteration, compared to the shaft of many other boots. A good cobbler ought to be able to do that and make them perfect for you; it isn't a complicated thing at all, even with the elastic gusset.

Thank you for sharing my secret agony! I am going to stop by the cobbler with photos and see what they say... I can't find anything comparable to the Julias in a grey or dark taupe - everything is black, brown or cognac.

I think the only possible difficulty would be the elastic/gusset thingy in the back. Definitely show a pic to the cobbler - I have been in secret agony since you returned those Julias, too!

Yes, I believe it is possible. I had this done with the tall Dr. Marten Classic boots and it turned out great. They didn't have the elastic on the edge though. And I think the cost was $50 or so.

Definitely take all the angles of the photo in and have them look at it. They would be able to tell you if it were possible or not.

It certainly can't take it to a professional to see if boot surgery will make them the boots of your dreams!

It wouldn't be evil at all Una. If those are truly the boots you love, then you need to try and make them work. I like Julie's idea of taking a picture of the boots and you in them to your cobbler and see what they say...nothing ventured, nothing gained. Let us know what you find out!

Take the picture of the boots and of yourself wearing them to the cobbler for the professional opinion. I've had boots shortened and they all came out wonderfully.

Confession: after seeing Rae's boot analysis post, I have to admit I am still agonizing over having returned the Frye Julias, although they really were too tall for me. I have not seen anything to compare in lace-up boots.

Would it be evil to have a cobbler trim them down an inch or so in height (shaft not heel)? And is that even possible with lace-up boots? Would they look weird?
