She made herself this outfit based on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amelia_Peabody" rel="nofollow">Amelia Peabody</a> from the Elizabeth Peters novels. She had never heard of steampunk before, she just wanted a good outfit for Amelia, suitable for exploring and detecting as a Victorian-era Egyptologist. When Kathy exhibited the costume she found out her nerdiness was greatly admired, and she won awards and acclaim at a costume conference.</p> <p>The photo REALLY doesn't do the costume justice, so allow me to embelish if you will. The camo denim jacket has military styling with faux leather button sections, and the buttons are a lovely iridescent blue shell with brass outlines. The apron is silk with a kind of seersucker texture. The underskirt is heavy brown denim with grey topstitching, with accents in the same faux leather as on the jacket. The hat (!) is a pith helmet with ribbon camouflage, the Amelia version of a ghillie hat. You can't tell in the photo, but there is a bird perched on the hat, as well as an ornate brooch right in front.</p> <p>If you've read this far, you might have fun checking out the costume conference she goes to, and the list o<a href="http://www.costumecollege.net/CoCo_classes_UL.html" rel="nofollow">f classes</a> they offer.
