Argh, twice yesterday I wrote most of a response, got interrupted, and lost everything I wrote.

The short version: Its hard to go wrong with a Think Tank bag. But I also see the value in a bag that doubles as a lightweight purse/tote when traveling or knocking around the city. I don’t have such a thing, and I don’t love exploring a city with my very gear-ish sling-style bag, even though it is easier on my shoulder than a traditional shoulder-strap style. Bags are not easy — there are so many, and it’s hard to evaluate until you actually put them through their paces.

I’m so glad you are getting a vacation, and Cuba was amazing! Let me know if you want a couple of restaurant suggestions.

PS: I had an instructor years ago who recommended a diaper bag! Really--he said the uglier the better, no one wants to steal a dirty diaper bag! and they are often waterproof, with lots of pockets!

so so many options! I seem to always be looking and buying new bags.
searching for the perfect travel/camera/purse bag!

I also prefer messenger for ease & low profile. I like a zip top for security, (some prefer an open flap for quick access). A back pocket is great for a notebook, tickets, phone, etc. The lighter bags are much easier for me to carry, especially when loaded with gear. I found the crumplers to be too bulky/noisy. I also have an insert which will fit any bag--thats another option. I love the look of leather but they get too heavy for me loaded up

Mine are black, but I have been looking at waxed canvas for a more casual looking bag. I have this classic Domke satchel in black which is simple and very easy to open with the single hook. it also comes in a heritage canvas
https://www.amazon.com/Domke-7.....encoding=U
https://www.amazon.com/Domke-H.....electronic

this Tamrac bag is super lightweight nylon. I sharpied out the label.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod.....#038;psc=1

Think tank is a good size, the zipper opens away from the body which I love. It looks like a camera bag though
https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod.....#038;psc=1

Tenba is a great shape & comes in various sizes. I took this one to Italy last when I needed to take alot of gear. not the most stylish, but rather non-descript
https://www.amazon.com/Tenba-M.....#038;qid=1

for fashion bags I took this JoTotes one overseas. It has lots of pockets and is a great size for gear. the faux leather is waterproof which was a plus
https://www.adorama.com/jtgrcbk.html

manfrotto also has some interesting designs, some look more like camera bags than others, but ive found the quality to be good.
https://www.adorama.com/mblfwnrp.html

Camera bags multiply no matter what I do. It's like a disease. If you find something like Tenba or Crumpler with a removable insert, you might be able to make a regular tote work for Seattle.

Ann, I really like the stickers for memory cards. Also pet tags.
I don’t plan on bringing my laptop. Debating my iPad, because I’ll have a few days in Florida afterwards. Going to try & get to the Everglades, but it seems that much of the Park is still inaccessible due to the hurricane damage.
I guess I was leaning to the fashion bags, because it’d be nice for walking around Seattle too. But now I realize there are outdoor parts of this trip.

I mostly shoot travel and event (run and gun type stuff), FWIW.

For style, I'd look at the Crumpler bags if I were you. If it were me, rugged and practicality matter because of my locations/subject matter, and nobody is fooled by the fashion bags. Heavy = steal me.

When I'm seriously working the gear, a bag that stands up on its own is worth its weight in gold, so I prefer working out of my LowePro bag that holds 2 lenses side by side.

A slim bag that fits close to the body is worth its weight in gold on
airplanes, trains and busses and I will get out one of my Tenba bags if I have to. I have one that fits my laptop (olive), one that is smaller (rust).
Similar: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c.....r_bag.html.

I'd be willing to sell you either of my Tenbas for a good price if you are
interested. DM me. I need to downsize my photo bags. I need to downsize my life.

Best advice: buy/borrow a million Gbs of memory cards and don't bother trying to back them up on the road. They are easy to secure and can take a lot of abuse. I would never reuse a memory card on the road unless I could make two separate copies, and that's a lot of gear to tote (laptops and back-up drives, etc.) I would not count on accessing cloud storage in Cuba. So I would just use more cards. Number them, put id stickers on them. A friend in a camera club just found a camera that had been lost by someone else for SEVEN years. They are doing a FB hunt now to find the owner by analyzing subject matter. A sticker would have gotten them their photos already.

Second best advice: order some pet tags as luggage tags. Really loud ones. Put one on your camera where the camera strap connects. One of the most common thefts is to lift the camera in a public place, just waling off acting like it belongs to the thief. They are more likely to pass on something with a tag identifiable at a distance and hard to remove. Mine are rainbow colored and on all my gear: tripod, bags, suitcases. If I could get one on my phone, it'd be there too.

Third best advice: talk to everybody while shooting. The photo becomes a small part of the conversation if you can talk past the camera lens. People like to be shown sincere interest in who they are and will give back some great photos once they see you really engage. You are going to have a blast.

I like that olive bag, but whoa on the price! That would make me sad, when the bag gets all beaten up by the travel. My brother carries a beat up old messenger-style bag and wears his camera... but he does it for a living... Anyways, tho, his Christmas list usually features B&H heavily...

Are you planning to carry everything all together full time? A full size DSLR and three lenses can get heavy... even just carrying my DSLR and the lens that's on it (plus the peripherals), my shoulder and back get really sore after a while if I'm using a bag that slings across one shoulder. Not saying it can't or shouldn't be done, but weight is my biggest consideration when I'm traveling with photo gear, especially if I'm not going to have a home base to safely stash things I don't want to carry full time. I have a hard time enjoying travel if I have to carry too much, so I usually just take 1 or 2 lenses, even if that means I may not have the perfect lens for everything. Packing camera gear for a trip is always an agonizing series of choices!

I have a Think Tank City Walker 10 shoulder bag... it's not particularly stylish, but it's an awesome, well-thought-out, lightweight bag, and I trust Think Tank to have solid design across their various models.

That sounds like a great trip!! I hope you get many awesome pictures and have a fantastic time.

My tall husband traveled with a technical camera bag but found himself a target overseas, even as big as he was. Walking around, he looked the picture of 'California tourist'.

He finally took over my oldest canvas messenger bag (a sturdy '70s bag that wears like iron but looks pretty nondescript these days). No one looked twice at him or nicked his camera again.

Don't spend real money to travel with a fancy camera bag.

Oh Anna that sounds awesome! The middle bag, the tote, doesn't seem quite enough for a camera unless you're thinking one bag that will also have your camera in it (but it sounds like you want an actual camera bag, like one that holds the base + lenses + batteries other camera bits). No suggestions here but the first and third look like they could work; I didn't see any inside photos of the first but am assuming it's a proper camera bag? I think going that route where you could customize the appearance a bit would be most fun.

So, I'm actually going on vacation. In January I'm going on a tour to Cuba. And of course I'm bringing my camera.
I've been looking at camera bags till my eyes crossed.
Here are some top contenders:
Porteen Gear has a crazy customization system, I came up with this
https://porteengear.com/your-design/?design=9354

I like the black leather, but maybe the waxed canvas is more practical.
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c....._tote.html

This is also well reviewed, and it has a rain cover

Also open to other suggestions. I want a crossbody, not a backpack.

ETA I have full size DSLR and 3 lens.

And I'll probably make a separate post as to clothes and shoes to pack
