My thoughts on this subject:

1. Seattle is on the west coast! Definitely more casual than the east coast.

2. Seattle is full of IT (Information Technology) people. That automatically makes it VERY casual.

3. Maybe those that spend the big bucks on clothing are not opera goers. Just a thought.

I'm a season subscriber to the Seattle Opera. Usually I go opening night but not always. I've seen cargo shorts on a guy who also perched his sunglasses backwards on his neck. This was for Porgie and Bess in August on a warm day.
I've also seen nylon track pants. Can't remember the performance.
Also I always see multiple people in jeans.
I try and get there an hour early get a glass a wine. From the first balcony I watch the parade of fashion and non-fashion come through the entrance.
I wear cocktail dresses with sleeves.

Oh Una, you are so fashion-forward that I thought everyone in your region was an UWP! Guess I was wrong.

Charmian, I appreciate the perspective you shared. After I started this thread, I started to think about friends of mine who have excellent reasons for dressing down at the opera:

- one has major foot issues and has to wear orthopedic shoes...so she usually wears baggy slacks to cover them up

- one takes the ferry from Bremerton, walks up to the Seattle Center to the Opera House, and does the same thing in reverse when the curtain falls at the end of the opera

I guess there is always another side to the story!

Oh, almost forgot!! I agree Charmian, the second article (that is cited in the blog) was excellent, very well-written and informative. The writer really did some fine research.

HAH! That article linked to an older one which I found to be more accurate.

In my experience (as a software developer, so take this with a boulder of salt), it's not that we collectively "let ourselves go" but rather that we permit a wider range of outfits. There are some very well-dressed men and women walking around downtown ... and I'm sure the Seattle-area YLFers would count too!

Ha! Having been voted worst-dressed city in the country, I can only wave in commiseration.

So this article just appeard in the city's major newspaper, The Seattle Times:

http://blogs.seattletimes.com/.....ssed-city/

I have attended the Seattle Opera a number of times and, sadly, have seen evidence of the poor state of some attendees' attire. I do applaud people for using their discretionary dollars for buying the opera ticket but really, friends, is there any way to raise the bar?

I know the forum has addressed this issue in the past but here is a challenge to my home town and I wonder:

Angie, what can we do?
