Lol. Looks cute! I've spent like that on a long Prairie Underground hoodie... Had it for a decade.

um,.I think I just spent $300 on a hoodie. Feels like a dream. cut longer than it looks on the model. I always choose my jackets one size up, so I don't have to think too hard about what's going underneath, and this worked well with this NSF.

There's also this, if you're in the market: http://www.revolveclothing.com.....2F%2Fwww.r... which I own (and love) in grey but I don't need a replicant. (I will tell Greg that RevolveClothing.com is not working for finds)

(I wear a hoodie at work when days start at 6AM. Not a fashion statement, but a necessity, and I try to look the part, when I can.)

Free People, definitely. It always annoyed me, when shopping there with my daughter, that, considering the prices, so many pieces looked pre-worn, or even worn out, but she loves them. Do you ever look in thrift shops? That's where I would go for RATE, being sure to check the men's & boys' departments, too.

Madewell is supposed to be Crew's RATE cousin... It can feel a little forced though (like the 'distressed' wool scarf I returned with identical machine made holes at regular intervals... LOL). And alaska girl is right: Anything can be RATEd up with a little road rash, nap rumpling, and the stray spray of wayward food truck hot sauce.

Allsaints used to be RATE. Lately I am feeling like RATE is as much a persona and attitude as a "look" or brand. Scuffed, rumpled, frayed, distressed, askew, faded, worn, half-tucked... I can manage that with anything!

Here's a new strategy insight, for my fellow RATErs. I'm finding that - a bit ironically and expensively - it is the high end finer and more delicate fabrics, that are easier to scrunch and wear like you rolled out of your boyfriend's bed. The delicate cotton lisle or cotton/silk blends seem to work pretty well. (Not 100% silk though) In my experience, heavier fabrications, and synthetic fabrics don't do this so well. Just another thought whilst I endeavor to master the look. xo

Hello. I am fairly new to this forum and have seen this term bandied about a lot. I am glad someone has explained it! I am definitely RATE-ish in my casual wear. Besides the brands mentioned I would add Vanessa Mooney and Samantha Wills (for jewellery) and Isabella Fiore (for bags). If you were Australian I would say to check out Sportsgirl. I also think the website Revolve has a fair bit of RATE stuff.

True story: I recently asked my mother (who is handy with a sewing machine) to take in a Free People top for me. It was just too big and boxy, even by FP standards. But I had a hard time dissuading her from "fixing" all its distressed and frayed edges. My mother is definitely not RATE.

There is a brand I find at Nordstrom and TJ Maxx, Bobeau, that leans RATE. Their knits hold up very well with minimal pilling. And of course, thrifting is always an option for that look, especially with some upcycling alterations.

I can't do boho, at least not the drapey-glam items you've highlighted. But if I put on pristine, it turns RATE before I get out the door. Fabrics rumple, hems semi-untuck themselves, sleeves scrunch and ankles roll up. I'll be in trouble whenever pristine becomes mandatory again.

So, I start with preppy or menswear basics (like Gap, J Crew, BR, even Tommy H) and then let them do what comes naturally.

I think that a RATE hairstyle can accomplish that sort of effortless tousled look, regardless of the clothes you put on your body. In fact, a RATE hairstyle, along with the more polished and pristine spring styles can be a really cool "style!"

To some degree, I feel that RATE (rough around the edges) is an attitude or a skill of looking effortlessly tousled, like the model on her day off.

Have you found certain labels or particular items that lend themselves to a RATE element? I am having trouble shopping with everything looking so pristine this spring. (That is not a genuine complaint; I love looking at those beautiful outfits.)

The labels that specialize in bohemian styling are some candidates, as mentioned by Angie in this post on Spring 2015 http://youlookfab.com/2015/01/.....ring-2015/ (Free People, Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Lucky). I've found that Rebecca Taylor, House of Harlow and Antique Batik can lean RATE.

I've bought my leather goods on Etsy and knit cap from Westerlind.

What ideas can you share?
